T. Hello, welcome to Pinnacle Writing. Tell us a bit about yourself.
KM: Hi, thanks for having me here. I’m 33 years old, born in Sydney Australia, but have spent most of my life in North Queensland. I currently live in South East Queensland with my wife. Oh, and I love to write!
T. When did you start writing?
KM: The first thing I ever remember writing was in grade two when I was 7 years old. There were a lot of (really bad) stick figure pictures and the story itself was less than fifty words in length, but we all start somewhere.
T. Was there a favorite writing teacher or mentor? Tell us about him/her.
KM: Probably my greatest mentor was a British heroic fantasy writer by the name of David Gemmell (who sadly passed away in 2006). I did not have the opportunity to meet David, but I read every single book he ever wrote (many of them three or four times) and his style really had a strong influence on me as an author.
T. Please tell us about your current book. What is the genre? Give us a thumbnail sketch.
KM: The Forgotten Land is fiction and is classed as action/adventure. The story is based around a patrol of Australian Special Air Service (SAS) soldiers who are in Iraq on a United Nations mission. During their patrol they discover and accidentally trigger a time portal. They find themselves in 10th century Viking Denmark. The Forgotten Land follows them on their adventure in an iron-age fight for survival.
T. Do you have a sequel or prequel in mind or in progress?
KM: Put simply, no. Although I am working on an unrelated novel called The Reckoning.
T. What are your writing habits? Are you an outliner or do you write “by the seat of your pants?
KM: I feel it is very important to have an outline about the overall story. My characters are slightly different in that they are individuals with their own lives and how they work their way through the outline is up to them. As long as they do not stray too far from the overall progression of the story, I tend to let them have their freedom.
T. What are your ideas about the future of digital publishing?
KM: Digital publishing is an amazing phenomenon which allows new books to be made available internationally very quickly. It is much cheaper for customers to buy digital books, and the delivery of the book is almost instantaneous. Some people still like to feel a paperback in their hands, but I certainly think that digital publishing is the way of the future.
