Groklaw Articles Ending on May 16th
Saturday, April 09 2011 @ 04:14 PM EDT

I have decided that Groklaw will stop publishing new articles on our anniversary, May 16.

I know a lot of you will be unhappy to hear it, so let me briefly explain, because my decision is made and it's firm. In a simple sentence, the reason is this: the crisis SCO initiated over Linux is over, and Linux won. SCO as we knew it is no more.

There will be other battles, and there already are, because the same people that propped SCO up are still going to try to destroy Linux, but the battlefield has shifted, and I don't feel Groklaw is needed in the new battlefield the way it was in the SCO v. Linux wars.

Remember that when I started Groklaw, I had no intention to create something as huge as Groklaw became. I really was just trying to learn how to blog. When all of you showed up, I saw what we could accomplish together, and we did. But to do it, I had to set aside a lot of things that are important to me too. I'd like to go back to being nobody, just living a normal life again.

I kept going all these years because when SCO attacked in the media and in the courtrooms, there was nobody to do what we did. Only the community could have answered SCO, technically, because you guys lived the history of UNIX and Linux and you knew what they were saying was not true. So we spoke up and explained over and over until everyone understood.

I know. The money behind SCO still have their daydreams. But the world has moved from computers and desktops to mobile and the cloud. Now it's Microsoft and all its venal little helpers and proxies attacking Google and Android. Linux back in 2003 had nobody to stand up for it. But Google doesn't need our help. I'm sure it wouldn't mind, but they have plenty of money and they can hire whatever they need or just buy it. I was willing to accept the threats and the danger and the smear campaigns I've had to experience when it was for the community. But I don't feel the same, if I see I'm not needed, and I see it. Android has won. No matter what tricks Microsoft may pull going forward, the world knows now that when there was free choice in the marketplace, people chose Android, which runs on Linux, over Microsoft's phone. Nothing they do can change that. All they can prove perhaps is that dirty tricks and misuse of the courts and regulatory bodies can distort the marketplace. But without the benefits of a monopoly, people don't actually choose Microsoft phones, at least not in comparison to Android. All they can do about that now is try to force you to use their products. That's in a way what a monopoly is.

So that's my decision. I have some other things I want to get back to and a project I've wanted to get to for a long time, and I want to be able to wake up and not worry about what happened in the news. I'll tell you truly, I never worked so hard in my life as I have with Groklaw, and while it's been a thrill and deeply satisfying, it's also been all-consuming of my time and skills and energy. The events recently in Japan deeply affected me, and it reminded me that there are some other things I'd like to accomplish, while there is world enough and time.

We'll keep the Timelines up to date with court documents, and we'll still finish the Comes exhibits if it kills me, so just email me your work when commenting is closed, if you are willing to keep helping.

I know some of you are as addicted to Groklaw as I am, so I've been slowing down how often I write articles recently, to help you get acclimated. I also was testing to see if I could try to slow down a bit and do it all, but I see I can't. To do Groklaw right, it requires my total attention and focus. But I don't want anyone to get the bends, including me. I have loved doing Groklaw, and I love hanging out with you guys. As far as I'm concerned, we're friends for life. While we have watched unbelievable venality and greed at play in the battle on the other side, the community remained true to its values, and I'm proud of that and I'm proud of you. I'm proud that Groklaw played the role that it did.

I always told you that I didn't do Groklaw for money or for fame or as a career move. I did it to be effective. That's all I wanted. And I told you that when it was over, I'd go back to my normal pre-Groklaw life. And now you know by this decision that I told you the truth.

No matter what happens next, I know that we changed the course of history. How many people get to say that? I never expected it, frankly, and I am grinning just thinking about how much fun we've had doing it. Our work will be available for historians permanently, so the impact we had isn't over today, and someday we'll tell our grandkids that we were part of this, part of Groklaw. We are in the history books. Our work will continue as long as anyone cares about this unique time period in the history of computer software, a history that we are a part of forever. And that is a long, long time.

In short, we dood it, y'all.

Very sorry to hear that PJ.

I have been a faithful groklawyer for years now, and I am very sorry to see the
articles stop.

The war on linux continues though, and we need more people like you to report on
it.

Pamela, Groklaw is a wonderful thing, that has brought many people together, has
fought a great fight, has, for the first time, brought court cases into the
modern, internet world in a way no-one could have predicted, and has made many
people friends. Thank you.

Sad to hear that, although it's been in the air for some time, now.

Will Groklaw be archived somewhere and/or continue to be accessible somehow?

Thanks PJ for your efforts, you really made a huge difference.

When will the red dress party be, BTW?

Wow! Having just been made redundant this week, Groklaw has been a part of my
daily routine for many years. I guess all things must come to an end - I know
the journey has been a fascinating one, though not the timely and hard-hitting
force of the law that most of us feel SCO deserved.

I know they're now beaten but, in truth, they did win, as much as they ever were
able to, Novell has thrown millions away, many years passed, certain
invididuals are sadly no longer around, Novell's own money was never returned
to them and the culprits profitted very nicely out of the fiaSCO of the
century.

PJ I wish you every happiness and success for the future and hope one day to
obtain a copy of your sure-to-be best-selling book

Tony

This was a surprise to read. I'm going to miss my daily dose - no, many times a
day dose - of Groklaw, but I am happy for you that you can close this long
chapter of your life on a note of success and move on to do new things.

I, for one, will keep up work on Comes transcriptions. Please keep the Come
Tracking page operational to make it practical for people to help out with that.
Otherwise there is no way to avoid duplication of effort with email-only
submissions.

I understand how one can get tired and want to move on. I can see that because I
am 70 years old, myself. I will nevertheless miss coming to read what is at this
site, not only the articles but also the responses which are usually of high
quality.

One of the best things that you have done is the moderation of comments, which
has kept things at a very high standard, indeed. I will probably miss that on
other sites.

The work done here has been valuable, too. I believe that the collection of all
the historical records is of lasting importance, not only for its relevance to
the legal analysis but to history itself.

Just one thing you said that I do not quite understand:

"I want to be able to wake up and not worry about what happened in the
news."

We all want that. But I do not expect it for myself. I also can not figure out
right now where else I am going to find the kinds of news stories that you put
up in the right-hand column. Nowhere, it seems.

Thank you very much for your work. There are only two bookmarks set in my
browser which do not have something to do directly with work: Groklaw and Linux
Today. It has been that way for years. So take that away as a memory.

your humanity. My teenage son aspires to be a journalist one day, and I can

Authored by: GreenDuck on Saturday, April 09 2011 @ 05:33 PM EDT
Hey PJ,

I can understand after the unbelievable amount of work and energy you've put
into Groklaw that you could want to move on. I wonder if someone else or a
team of people could take over - I think Groklaw continues to play an important

role - emphasising insight and analysis rather than just posting news.

PS: I'm sure you know this already, but you've done an amazing job.

I came here when searching for SCO many years ago. My employer was a large SCO
Unix user and I was simply curious about the vendor, SCO.

I stayed when I found a wonderful site and community. My interest lies mostly in
folloiwng SCO's story. I'm glad to hear that the SCO documents page will be
maintained and I'll continue to read about it here.

Congratulations on starting the rest of your life.

I have been an almost silent follower ever since the site opened, and have
checked it almost every day, and frequently more than once a day. You have done
a wonderful job, and I feel I am losing one of the most interesting sites on the

about the shady practices that go on.

Good luck with whatever you plan to do next. You certainly deserve a rest.

I've been watching since practically before the beginning, and
helped with covering the Daimler-Chrysler sideshow in this 8-ring

What a wonder that SCO ended up ground to a fine paste once this
was all finished.

As a long-time journalist who's left an industry where hard-won respect and

of how things could have been done as well as an amazing defender of freedom in
all its meanings, software and otherwise.

Firstly, I need to thank you. We will all miss Groklaw's perspective and
insight... The situation with Sony is still active, and that is the primary
reason I still read Groklaw. I own a PS3 that used to run Linux, and I know the
precedent that the Sony v. Hotz decision may set will effect more than just
PS3s. (who really "owns" that gadget you're holding, or the software
on it? etc.) Where will I (and other non-lawyers) get my Sony litigation updates
now?

Groklaw Articles Ending on May 16th
Authored by: Anonymous on Saturday, April 09 2011 @ 06:00 PM EDT
Has it really been this long? I never opened an account, but Groklaw has been a
daily habit for me for as long as it has existed. I have been helped on several
levels. First, my brother in law is a lawyer, and now I can talk to him with
some degree of understanding. Second, I understand more about computer history,
operating systems, patents, and abstract mathematics than I could possibly have
otherwise known. Third, I've seen just how devious people can be while staying
barely out of trouble; and I've learned how truth is a bigger force than that.
And we've all been sideline witnesses of some very good lawyering.

The question for me now is, where will I go to find such masterful commentary
and insight into things legal? Who has such balance and integrity, that also
writes really, really well?

Best wishes to you, Pamela.

PJ,

Your wonderful work has inspired Shane and I as we ran Boycott Novell (now part
of Techrights) because of the wonderful research that you did, rebutting a lot
of the corporate press in the process. I hope you will continue to help us
techies understand how to interpret things from a legal point of view.

We are going to miss you and carry on with your inspiration.

I just want to say Thank You for the tremendous amount of your own personal time
and energy you have put into Groklaw.

I'm sure you haven't been thanked nearly as much as you should be. What you
have done is a tremendous service for everyone who loves freedom and choice.

Thank you for suffering the personal attacks and stalking you have received. No
doubt there will be people attacking your good name for a long time.

Unless you are near 80, then Groklaw has taken well over a tenth of your life.
Who would have thought when we started?

So many times I've been so glad of what you have done.

It's great to see how the world has changed. Big, powerful and wealthy players
are now solidly behind Linux and open source. Only the old dinosaurs are
fighting the inevitable.

I've always believed that open source is destined to win in the end. And it
will. Everywhere. Even on the desktop. Why? Because it doesn't adhere to
marketing schedules. It is pure meritocracy. Not driven by budgets.
Artificial new releases to extract more money for little more than a new coat of
paint. It is the passion of the developers that moves it forward. Perhaps
slowly. But inexorably.

May God bless you on whatever new projects you set your hand to.

Thank you.

8 Years . . .
Authored by: tyche on Saturday, April 09 2011 @ 06:11 PM EDT
8 years. And thought I wasn't here right at the start it was only shortly
after. And to think that I found your site mostly by accident looking for
information on this strange story that someone was trying to shut down Linux.
Now, for nearly 8 years, this has been the "Home Page" for my
computers (I've gone through 2 of them in the long course of that time). Some
of the jobs I've held haven't lasted as long as this site has.

And now, I feel almost as I did when I retired from my last job. That
"what do I do, now" feeling. It must be even worse for you, unless
you've got some positive plans for the future . . . and I sincerely hope that
you do.

You have been a "moment of sanity" in a world gone crazy - a
refreshing realization that I wasn't the only one that felt that there should be
something better than corporate greed driving civilization.

And now it comes to an end, and I must say goodbye to someone I've come to care
about . . . again. I wish you well in whatever endeavors you should happen
upon. I wish you peace and joy and fulfillment. And know that you have my
thanks along with all the others here at Groklaw.

Groklaw comes to an end

It has been a wonderful journey, and thank you PJ for inviting everyone along
for the adventure.
The content and reading of Groklaw has been a great source of information and
pleasure since I became aware of this site, and will miss the interaction.
Reading Groklaw used to be the first thing I did in the morning when I started
up the computer. There always seemed to be some new twist, turn, or whoop-dee
and it was great to see the progression of the situation.
I must admit the magic has seemed to disappear, but only in as much as SCO has
faded away also.
Again, thank you for inviting us along, and we will always appreciate your
efforts and dedication.

Dear Pamela,

Your efforts have shown that a single individual with backbone, conviction,
right principles, and determination can apply open-source methods to areas other
than software -- and succeed. Through you, Groklaw, and "the gang", I
personally have learned much about the awesome nature of "the law" and
its potential for both good and abuse.

Many eyes can indeed make evil shenanigans shallow. We are all better off for
having "met" you.

Thank you.

deeds that still need to be done. You have shown us the
way, and made it very clear that a dedicated individual
armed with the truth can make a difference and summon
what might otherwise remain a silent crowd of good people.

I have learned a lot from Groklaw, but the most important
lesson is this: people in general are a fairly decent
bunch. The rotten eggs stink and can make life miserable
for others, but they are a minority, as they have
always been. I will try to always remember that.

PJ,
Thank you for all that you have done in both creating and maintaining Groklaw,
it has been an immense achievement. Like many others I have followed this site
almost daily, learning so much (though feeling guilty for contributing so
little) and being encouraged by the collective efforts stirred by you here to
right the wrongs of SCO and their ilk.
Let me echo the cry of others 'where will I go now for my daily news and update
if Groklaw has gone'. However, let that not be seen in anyway as a complaint
about you and your well deserved rest from this demanding daily role, but rather
as a heartfelt tribute and testament to what you by your efforts have created
here for us.
So long PJ, you will not be forgotten

Integrity
Authored by: jbb on Saturday, April 09 2011 @ 06:40 PM EDT
PJ, your integrity made Groklaw a shining star on the internet. Thank you for your years of dedication and hard work that made Groklaw possible. It has been my favorite site on the internet because your hard work and integrity made it a safe place to have civilized discussions on a range of topics that are of interest to me. Your insightful articles didn't hurt either.

You have the all-or-nothingness that is the hallmark of many true geeks. IMO it's a feature not a bug, although it can make it necessary to take a total break from a project in order to let it go.

Perhaps it would be a good idea for you to get/retain a list of email addresses just in case someday you might want to cash in some of the massive collection of favors you have accumulated over the years. It's the FOSS way.

No worries, if needed there will be a replacement.
Authored by: Anonymous on Saturday, April 09 2011 @ 06:57 PM EDT
Groklaw has done well to prove the open-source development model for a blog.

If there is a further need for it as SCO wanes, Novell's patents wax in
Microsoft's shadow, or Oracle looms over Google's Android, it will exist again.
When a vacuum forms, the things around it rush to fill it in.

Groklaw's success was due to PJ's professional skill, knowledge, and tight
reins. I hope that the future sites will show the same.

Where there was once nothing, then wikileaks, now there are many. Where there
was once nothing, then groklaw, there will be more. It is a good thing to bring
knowledge of the legal process to the masses, and remove the veils that are used
to hide the truth from the courts and from us.

I will miss Groklaw. In the same vein I look forward to its successors.
Knowledge once exposed to light cannot be hidden again.

PJ,

As someone who learned a lot almost from day one of Groklaw, more than a
simple thank you, you deserve our most sincere wishes of success.

But even more than that, count on us (on me at least) for helping you with
whatever you need. What you did for Linux community is priceless. When noone
stood in front of the window to shout loud "It's a lie!" to SCO, you
did, it was your face at the window, even if some of us where in the back of the
room.

If your new project(s) involve something the Groklaw community can help, don't
think twice: ask and you will receive. It's the type of offer only someone that
knows what to ask and the consequences of it can receive. We can offer you our
unconditional help cause we know of your integrity and passion for the right
things.

If you ever need something from Brazil, I'll be glad to help.

We'll all miss reading Groklaw on a daily basis. I know I will. Thanks again
for everything, it was a nice ride after all.

Hi PJ,

I'll miss you, but you must do what is right for you. Tech journalism is going
to suffer. It's in terrible shape and isn't going to get better anytime soon.
You've got me wondering what I can do, and you showed what one committed person
can do. Money is always the hard part; good solid in-depth journalism does not
fit into the contemporary clinkspam linkbait keyword-infested SEO-gaming
business model. But twaddle, swill, and advertorial do. Which is a natural
consequence of advertiser-supported content, and why I'm always nattering how
people need to fork over their own hard-earned cash to support the publications
that are important to then. (Something I need to do more of too.)

You did make history, and you made a real difference. Now it's time for other
people to carry the load. Thanks again for all you've done. Be well and may your
dreams come true.

With SCO's dismemberment, what happens to the other cases ie SCO v IBM, SCO v

Tragic news
Authored by: Anonymous on Saturday, April 09 2011 @ 07:48 PM EDT
I am very sad, I've followed Groklaw almost from day 1, and
I've learned a lot about the law.

I understand that Groklaw's role in the SCO is now over,
that I can settle myself to, but what deeply concerns me is
who is going to demystify the legal processes surrounding
patents and open source? I know there are other bloggers,
but nothing comes close to Groklaw and the community.

But if this is the way it must be, then it must be, but its
a huge loss to the community.

Could someone pick up the torch?
Authored by: Anonymous on Saturday, April 09 2011 @ 07:52 PM EDT
For me, groklaw wasn't just helping Linux as it was under
fire, but understanding what was really going on with
various lawsuits. The regular press certainly isn't a good
source to understand what's going on.

We have many other knowledgeable people that post comments
on here. Is there someone (or a group of someones) you
could appoint to be your successors? Everyone already knows
this is the place to go to when you want to know what's
really happening. It would be awesome if it still could be,
even if you're not at the driver's seat.

What a wild ride
Authored by: cruss on Saturday, April 09 2011 @ 08:35 PM EDT
Allow me to add my voice to the chorus of thanks expressed
here. I was a rabid Groklaw reader early on and followed the
tense back and forth in the days when the outcome was
uncertain. It was like reading a Parry Mason drama and
getting a graduate course in Law review at the same time.
Then I changed jobs, moved, and changed jobs again. Somehow
I lost touch with Groklaw. Then with the Oracle Java
lawsuit against android I thought "I wonder what Groklaw has
to say about this?" I was so excited to see PJ's analysis
and declaration that it would be covered "blow by blow". I
was also amazed to see that the Linux/SCO lawsuit was still
going and that somehow SCO was on life support. I was hooked
once again.

PJ, Thank you for every second of tireless dedication you
have put into Groklaw. You have made a great impact on my
life and, i'm sure, the lives of countless others here.
Also, you have helped all the people who use Linux every day
and don't realize it because no one has a hand in their
pocket. I know that the community, and industry as a whole,
won't be the same without you.

I see this as a good thing, PJ. I'm very grateful for your work with Groklaw,
and only wish I could have contributed more financially and editorially.

But moving on is a profoundly human thing to do. Thanks for letting me/us grow
along with you and Groklaw these many years.

I do think Groklaw's absence will leave a void to be filled. There's the SCO
vs. IBM shoe to drop, not to mention SCO's appeals to SCOTUS ("infinity and
beyond").

You'll maintain the timelines, I know, and I'll just have to refresh the browser
to see what happens. And pray for good things for you in your next field of
endeavor!

subtelities and methods that cannot be read about anywhere. The
knowledge I've gained from groklaw has been more than just the
words I read.
I'd like to thank you for all you've done to open up

This has been a voice of reason, pointing up this pitiful misuse of the courts
by a M$ proxy.

This was the opening battle in the "Corporate War", Proprietary vs.
Open.

It was also a major education on how corrupt our legal system is; I knew it was
bad, but...is this really the best people we could find? (Certain Judges seem to
have little respect for the law...others seem fair and balanced; maybe there's a
difference in the water on the two coasts, lol.)

Gutted you're closing shop, don't know what I'll do for my
daily reading. I haven't felt this gutted since Lugradio
called it quits. You've done amazing things with Groklaw and
we'll miss you. Be proud of what you've done here,
explaining the law to us nerds can't be easy and you've done
an amazing job of educating us all. Good luck and please
keep us informed on your future projects, can't wait to see
what you do next. You're an amazing lady. Thanks PJ.

But I can see why you've made it. And I respect it.

At the same time, I suspect that the community is going to develop other sites,
which will mirror some of the skills that we learned from you, each of which
will carry on part of the Groklaw tradition.

Thanks for a wonderful rollercoaster ride. Thanks for teaching us so much about
research, and the importance of the small things. Thanks for all of the hours of
hard work that you've put into Groklaw.

And last of all, thanks for being you.

PJ,

Thank you for all the blood, sweat and tears you have put into Groklaw. Not only
has it been a reliable source of information about the SCOX soap opera, it has
also been an enlightening beginners' education about how the legal system works.
Discovery, summary judgements, rules of civil procedure: all these important
parts of the process were unknown to me until I read about them here.

So, now it's time to put on that fabled red dress and go for a night on the
town. Well done, Pamela!

Groklaw lived up to it's name. THANK YOU!
Authored by: Anonymous on Saturday, April 09 2011 @ 09:27 PM EDT
Hello PJ,
I've been following the SCO fiasco since it was originally was reported on
slashdot. Like others I wanted more information and slashdot was too limited
for that. Then you setup your blog with the most insightful articles and I
finally had a source that I could follow and understand what the full scope of
the problems. I want to thank you for that "deep drink" of insightful
legal analysis you provided to us all.

You became a GIANT that people could stand upon your shoulders to see further
than ever before. It's amazing how many people were inspired by you to study law
because they made the connection between legal texts being an interpreted
language. Think of how many people opened up PACER accounts just to follow what
you were doing and an even more surprising thing of how many people read their
first court documents on groklaw. You made the law accessible to engineers and
programmers who just thought of it as a blackbox that could not be learned much
less grokked.

You created and sustained a community through a rocky path and we all
understand your being tired and needing a break. I agree completely with you
that Google can afford their own legal help. Only your groklaw community had the
community interest to follow this case and help you wherever we could. Thank
you for that opportunity.

I would ask that you consider one thing before freezing groklaw. Does George
Hotz have the same financial backing in his case? While Android is sexy in the
media, the community cares more about the rights that will be fought in Sony vs.
GeoHot. This case is the most important one that I can think of for engineers
and programmers with repercussions that will last a long-time. May I recommend
that you create a sonyvgeohot.groklaw.net subdomain and let the community
continue to thrive there? Your team can run it without you, you have taught
them well.

Please remember the final lesson from Stranger in a Strange Land.
"If one tenth of one percent of the population is capable of getting the
news, then all you have to do is show them — and in a matter of some generations
all the stupid ones will die out and those with your discipline will inherit the
Earth."

From a personally selfish point of view, I am sad to lose my constant source of
news on the Linux legal front.

However, your 8 years of dedicating your waking hours to Groklaw has been an
incredibly valuable donation to the community. There not been anything to match
Groklaw. I am in awe of your abilities and dedication - the community that grew
around Groklaw is a testament to them.

I wish you well in your ongoing projects, and in your life outside of projects.

s/he won't accept factual data contradicting anything that

is.

groklaw is a FUD machine, anti-novell, anti-truth

yep, won't even prove who the real "PJ" might actually be -

SCO has won, M$ is getting Novell's patents.

Thanks for seeing this through. It's almost funny to think back on our outrage
almost a decade ago when SCO started stirring this up; it reminds me of my
outrage on receiving my first spam message in the 1990s. I suppose such things
are here to stay, but now it will be difficult for anyone to claim that the
Linux copyrights are not on firm footing. Good job. I hope things have also gone
well on the work front since OSRM didn't work out.

been a pleasure.
You have made your mark on the IT world, probably more of a mark
than you realise. Technically the SCO affair is not yet over, but as you
say, its influence is no more.
Just make sure that you put on that red dress, so that we really do know
that it's all over, and enjoy doing whatever it is that you move on to. I
have faith that whatever it is will have the same degree of attention as
you have paid to Groklaw.

Miss Jones,

I didn't often wander through here, but I always enjoyed
and appreciated the open, honest knowledge presented here.
Groklaw is, in a way, reminiscent of certain publications
here in the colonies back in the mid- to late-1700s. And what
will be remembered in future centuries is the honest
reporting and honest opinions.

Good luck with your new adventures. If they don't pan
out, you can always find a small town in the next territory
that needs an honest sheriff, or a republic that needs to be
rescued with honest, open information.

It's been hard work. But, of course, nothing worth doing
is easy. Wherever we are, wherever you find us, you'll be
welcome to light 'n' set.

Groklaw Articles Ending on May 16th
Authored by: Anonymous on Saturday, April 09 2011 @ 11:58 PM EDT
Fed up with the media monopoly in the small town where I live (one family owned
the only TV station, the radio station and the only newspaper in the community-
the newspaper started the only online blog dedicated to the area, complete with
heavy handed moderation and censorship), I started an online alternative on
Sept. 3, 2003 dedicated to the concept of a free speech forum on local politics,
society and issues that affect every resident.
I have stuck with the forum through three changes in residence, three city
administrations and a battle with cancer that almost killed me (while in the
hospital after surgery to remove most of my intestines, I ran the forum from my
hospital bed, with two tubes in one arm, being fed through a line in the other
arm because I couldn't swallow and a chemo tube inserted into a port in my
shoulder).
My wife lived in the hospital room with me the whole time and relentlessly
begged me to forget the forum and try to deal with the situation I was in. I
tried to tell her that as long as there was a need for the work I was doing, I
was going to do it as long as I could. I am convinced that the drive I felt
then, and still do, played a huge part in my will to survive. I even put the
forum in my will so that it would survive financially if anything happened to me
and secured the future services of a paid administrator if needed.
I know that if ever the work I do is never necessary any longer, I would take
some deep breaths and let the sun set on it all without having to be told by
others it was time.
I have used the resources of Groklaw for years. The news picks, the comments,
the information on the site from PJ and others has given me more help than any
ten law libraries could have.
From serious issues such as the MPAA/RIAA/P2P information I shared with students
in local colleges and universities, to information on legal cases and precedents
I shared with people who were facing nightmares in court that they had no hope
of understanding, to the simple transition I made because of GL from being a
Windoze sheeple to a dedicated Linux user, it all happened because of my work
and GL.
Personally, I don't think the SCO tale is done. The sequel will be the CPTN
patent raid. These things never end well and CPTN is only the beginning of this
phase of anti-Linux.
Also personally, I think GL would have a lot to offer on the patent wars front,
but something like it might could take that over if the GL community decided it
was worth the effort.
PJ, I salute you for the dedication and (undoubtedly) thousands of hours you've
put into the site and the work. Through attacks, threats, rewards and losses,
you carried on. My thanks might be small in the scheme of things, but they are
sincere and heart felt.
So take some deep breaths, grab your favorite beverage, take your shoes off and
relax in your favorite chair. Tomorrow, take a walk outside, take a cruise, go
see family, do the things you've wanted to do but have put off for too long.
We'll be seeing you in passing. My hat's off to the lady in the red dress.

In this situation "Thank you" sounds not enough. PJ, you should
understand that you didn't only beat SCO, but you also made geeks and even
non-geeks interested in copyright, trademark, etc. laws. We finally understood
that it is not enough to have good software, free music or video, or text - you
should know your rights. That freedom can be nuanced.

PJ,

I'll join the chorus singing praises...

I starting reading Groklaw in early May 2003, when I started a new job. I took
me about two years to finally sign up for an account.

I feel like I've learned a massive amount about the legal system. The good and
the bad. Unfortunately, there's been a lot of bad. Motion practice was my
favorite part of the SCO saga. That stuff was fun to read.

Thanks to you, I once correctly used the term "mooted" in an important
conversation and shocked someone who didn't think that was a proper word. I
knew better from reading Groklaw. It was good to be right that day.

I'll miss your fine legal analysis. I appreciate how much work it must have
been to read, explain, and comment on complex legal documents.

If the world rewarded brains and hard work, you would be one of the worlds
richest woman.

Well, not that way, exactly...I mean it's awesome that you (and the community)
has reached a point where Groklaw's coverage really isn't necessary. The other
way this might have gone is if Groklaw's coverage became futile, and thankfully,
we never turned down that road.

I hope the book is ready for christmas, because this is an amazing case of how
to deliberately flush a company down the toilet, and should be required reading
for every MBA major.

Oh, don't play coy. We all know that Groklaw's going to be central to whatever
book gets published, and there will be a book published.

And Rob Enderle, Maureen O'Gara, and Dan Lyons all got outed as worthless
mouthpieces, a public service for which I will be ever grateful.

The best site on the Internet
Authored by: Anonymous on Sunday, April 10 2011 @ 01:34 AM EDT
Thank you for everything, PJ. I can't tell you how much I will miss this.

For lawyers like me dedicated for life to open source and open standards,
Groklaw is the best site on the 'Net. And you are one of the most honorable
people I have ever run across.

Godspeed, and good luck with whatever you do next.

I have been one that is where i am due to linux (i am a fan of the GPL) and i
have been following this site since the whole SCO stuff started. I was baffled
how legally one can try to smear linux with lies and arranged truth.
But yes this site driven by the energy PJ and her collaborators and
commenters...always kept me assured and comforted me that in the end..Linux and
GPL will not be killed by legalese and court technicality.

There has not been a clear cut decision as i/we would have liked it but SCO is
no more and Linux and open source and specifically GPL style opens source
software lives and thrives.

Yes there are any battles ahead...what is it you buy when you buy a movie or a
book or a computer....the problem Stallman faced with his printer long ago
lives in many things we buy.

PJ and all others who contributed and maintain this site
Great Thank you from this reegular reader.

all the best for the future

Cheers

Happy Trails to You ...
Authored by: rsteinmetz70112 on Sunday, April 10 2011 @ 01:39 AM EDT
.. until we meet again.

It's been a long strange trip.

My offer of dinner in New Orleans still stands when you get here. I'll hold you
to your long ago acceptance. You have my email address.

I must to admit I'm somewhat shocked and disappointed that Groklaw will not
continue in it's present form. Change is inevitable but I hoped that that change
would somehow result in the continuation of the essential Groklaw. Perhaps that
can happen in other venues.

Because of you, I found myself interested in the law.
Authored by: solbu on Sunday, April 10 2011 @ 01:54 AM EDT
I have been lurking here almost from the beginning. A norwegian IT news site (ITavisen) was linking to your blog when the SCO saga started, and I have been here ever since.

Up until one or two years ago, it was the first thing I read when waking up in the morgning. I have a daily routine of visiting sites in a particular order, it just became a habit. And Groklaw is the first site in that routine.
Many of the SCO court rulings you've posted was painflully long, and sometines hard to read due to the volume of text. But I've read every word of most of them. And I've enjoyed readding them. If someone just 10 years ago told me that Id soon be reading court roulings and fillings, AND enjoy reading them, I would have thought they where silly and asked them if they where feeling alright. ;-)=

I still read here almost every day, it's just no longer the first thing I do, as I've read today that many others also writes.

Because of the way you explained the various legal aspects of it all and posting of the rulings and fillings, I've grown an interest of understanding the law and what parts one should focus on when reading rulings and fillings.
Also you've thought me how to read the law and understanding the system and why judges do what they do.

It has been fun and I hope to see you online again sometime in the future.
Thank you so much for the work you have done.

I will end by quoting something I just stumbled across, prior to writing this post, but after reading this article. I have a calendar that I bought sometime in the mid 1990's. It's a calendar with no year, and thus eternal, and it has a quote for each day. The calendar is norwegian, and it's name is "Between good friends" (translated). I don't remember to turn it over every day, so just now I turned it over and came to april 8, and saw a quote by Ralph Waldo Emerson. Somehow it made me think of you. It reads:
My friends have come to me unsought. The great God gave them to me.
:-)=

If you are ever in Norway, send me an email and I'll by you a coffee or something. :-)=

When the time comes that we are all going to Heaven with God, I hope we will all get together and have som fun. :-)=

Thanks PJ, for all your efforts.

But I don't think the landscape has changed so much that
Groklaw still isn't needed (or at least useful).

Google may not need us, but I think we are fooling ourselves
if we think IBM needed us in 2003. Linux was already really
big business then. Groklaw has been great in the geek
"court of public opinion", but the SCO lawsuits were doomed
to failure from the start. The press just didn't know it
then.

Anyway, you need and richly deserve a break from all this.
Life will go on without Groklaw.

You done good, PJ.

Thanks to you, I think there are a lot more people in the community that now
realise how important it is to understand the legal framework that exists around
software in general and open source in particular.

Best wishes in whatever you decide to do next.

Set up a foundation to carry on the work?
Authored by: Anonymous on Sunday, April 10 2011 @ 02:22 AM EDT
PJ - you are truly a freedom fighter, and a great leader in the linux community.
You deserve all the vacation you can get.

But (there's always a but), honestly, this is the best linux news site on the
web (due to the excellent "news picks" sidebar, and the original
articles). Also, the commentors, volunteers, and contributors have added a
tremendous amount of useful and entertaining content over the years.

For these and many more reasons, I think that Groklaw should be considered a
"priceless gem" of a community effort for linux, and for the promotion
of open source and open standards. For that reason, I think it would be more
appropriate to continue the site and its work under the guidance of a community
foundation. PJ could step aside, and could send in guest contributions if she
liked.

Truly, Groklaw is a better source of news, and a more important tool for
software freedom than any other site - including Linux Today, slashdot,
LXer.com, Linux.com, etc.

I would personally prefer to see Groklaw focus on safeguarding the kernel
development process, the FSF, the GNU tools, and other worthwhile, truly free
projects, rather than backing the attempts of a large, hyper-competitive
corporation like Google to make money from Android. In fact, I would prefer to
see backing of Meego rather than Android. However, that is just my preference,
and the foundation would need to figure out which direction is the best to go,
and which fights are most important.

Also, from my perspective as a fraud examiner, corporate whistleblowers should
be encouraged to come forward and disclose fraud against the government by some
of the large, proprietary software corporations. The recent case involving a $46
million dollar payment by Oracle to settle qui tam allegations by whistleblowers
Norman Rille and Neal Roberts that Sun Microsystems had paid kickbacks to get
government contracts prior to being purchased by Oracle should be dissected in
greater detail.

In the end, PJ's contributions are far too important to be set aside, and they
should be continued by a community of volunteer writers and editors. A community
foundation should be set up to continue the work. If the name
"groklaw.net" cannot be used, a suitable replacement should be arrived
at quickly - LibreGrok anyone??

Thank you for fighting the good fight, and whatever you
decide to do going forward, I hope you enjoy it and it's not
nearly exciting as Groklaw.

(Some of you may remember me from the earliest days of
Groklaw; if you do, I'm flattered. If not, no big deal. I
had to drop out just after SCO started getting flattened for
a variety of reasons, but I followed Groklaw as best I could
in the intervening time, and every time Linux scored a
victory over SCO's efforts to chain it to a desk and put it
to work as their slave, I smiled.)

Red Dress, if you go, where shall I go? What shall I do?
Authored by: Ian Al on Sunday, April 10 2011 @ 02:41 AM EDT
Frankly, my dear, you don't need the dame. With enough courage, you can do without a reputation.

I can't think about that right now. If I do, I'll go crazy. I'll think about that tomorrow.
Groklaw has forced folk from far and wide to question the status quo. I have noticed a dramatic change in reporting about IT issues. Folk recognise that the fastest growing and most powerful companies are based on open and free.

I cannot imagine a life without PJ and Groklaw, but PJ is right. It is time for all of us to move on.

We take with us a legacy which is worth eight years of our lives.

Thank you, PJ. It's been good to know you.

Quite A Surprise!
Authored by: Anonymous on Sunday, April 10 2011 @ 03:07 AM EDT
I had been considering the non-SCO articles as what I could expect to see from
Groklaw in the future and considered I would visit on occasion as I do at
Slashdot.

But no, Groklaw will close it's doors, the stock boards will follow as there is
no SCO stock, and we are back to where we began with Slashdot comments.

Just another sandboxed user saying so long and thanks for all the fish.

Good luck, P.J.

Dear PJ,

thank you for the service that you have provided, in the form of documents,
facts, transcripts and analyses sprinkled with you witty humor. I've enjoyed
reading groklaw, but I can see how exhausting it is to keep up that level of
activity.

Personally, I don't care whether PJ is a woman, men, or a pseudonym for the
whole legal department at IBM (or wherever) :-), but I have deep respect for
what you have done. Judging from some of the attacks that you had to endure over
the years, I find it understandable that you chose to remain anonymous.

Good luck in any future endeavors of yours.

Forklaw?
Authored by: leopardi on Sunday, April 10 2011 @ 03:56 AM EDT

Hi PJ. Firstly, thanks for all the hard work you have put in over the last 8 years. I feel like I have been through some sort of quasi-para-legal training over all this time, as do, I am sure, many others.

Which bring me to my main point. Many open source projects have one strong lead person, and cannot survive without that person. Quite a few (usually the larger ones) do not. You are obviously that lead person for Groklaw. I was thinking, thought, would it be possible for us as a community to carry on the active side of Groklaw in some from while you took on more of a ceremonial role? Or would we need to fork Groklaw (hopefully not like the XFree86/X.Org fork !)? What would be involved in carrying on? What would be involved in forking?

Like everyone else here, I have to thank you for the wonderful adventure you
have guided us through. Over the years of lurking here, I've gained an
appreciation of the workings of the courts and learned to somewhat understand
the strange language of legalese. For that I am extremely grateful, I think
{:>)

SCO (and the folks at BSF and MS for that matter) would do well to heed this
little gem from Lewis Carroll:

"if it was so, it might be, and if it were so, it would be; but as it
isn't, it ain't."

Thanks for everything, PJ.

Justice?
Authored by: Anonymous on Sunday, April 10 2011 @ 05:20 AM EDT
So where is the justice?

The main thing I have learnt over the years is that the US legal system would
appear to be an ass. I was under the impression that the legal system was
supposed to be in the service of its people. Groklaw however has proven to me
that this is not the case.

I offer my heart felt grattitude to all those who contributed to Groklaw, both
good and bad. Without you all I would be less than I am.

What do you want to do with your life? Do you want to hide
in an office, or do you want to change the world?

[Paraphrasing Steve Jobs here :-)]

I agree with you that you've made a significant contribution
that has changed the world and I thank you for all of your
hard work and dedication. I've enjoyed Groklaw since the
beginning and will miss it. I think you're also correct
that the wars against Linux has reached a watershed where
many more people are informed and educated about Linux and
open source.

But I think you've overlooked something about yourself that
is evident to most of us here. You have some wonderful
skills and leadership abilities, especially with the success
of Groklaw, it would be a waste if you just faded into
obscurity. I think there is a role for you in the open
source movement. I don't know what it is, but I'm sure it
would be very useful. Take some time off to rest, reflect,
and re-energize. I would love to see you take on another
project like this. All the best.

Thank you, PJ. This blog has taught me so much and been essential reading for
many years. Like many (most?) of your readership I have been a long-time lurker
with very few contributions, but the way I think about technology and the law
has changed radically since I started following Groklaw and I can only thank you
for opening my eyes to what is going on out there.

I'm sure other bloggers (and their advertisers) would kill to have a blog with
such great content and such a readership. You should be very proud of what you
have created.

Although I feel it's slightly premature to say goodbye more than a month before
you shut down I will in case we don't get the opportunity on your last entry.

So thank you, PJ, for everything; Good luck in your next projects - if one of
them is a book then count me in as a buyer.

“I have some other things I want to get back to and a project I've wanted to get to for a long time”

I know the feeling... I wish I could get back to the “other things,” too, but as I grow older, I'm running out of energy to combine these with my professional activities. It also feels like I'm getting slower and slower at getting things done—or does time really keep flying faster and faster?

Anyway, even though I will miss Groklaw and the insight that you provided through it, I wish you all the best, and I hope you can get around to both the “other things” you want to get back to and to the “project” that you want to get to—whatever they may be.

There is so much to be done, but I think Groklaw has done so well. When

Dear Pamela.
I know i haven't contributed much at all , being mostly ignorant of the American
law system and it's workings.
False accusations , false statements and the countless millions it takes to get
justice. The efforts of people like you have given us more than we could have
wished for of a blog. You took it to another level entirely.

But what about the average Joe ?
Where does this leave him ?

It seems to me that the corporate can take care of themselves. They got the money
and they have the results.
But the average Joe in his daily life does not have that kind of money to get
lawyers and court fees etc.
I wonder if a new kind of blog couldn't achieve on a person basis what you have
done for the corporate.
Raise a little hell for those who unjustly attack the most vulnerable knowing
fully well that justice has to be paid for. That they can't afford justice.
For what is a justice system that if you have no money to defend yourself
against malicious attackers you have no chance of getting ?

Thank you of making us aware of what was going on.

I , for one , look forward to seeing you on the beaches late at night dancing in
that nice red dress.

Enjoy life and all it has to offer.
You have been a good person. Now it's time to lay back and sip a Pina Colada
under the sun :D

Sincerely yours

Richard Hebert

That's too bad. I get burnout.

I come here these days not because of SCO...despite enjoying seeing the
corporate corpse thrashing around...but for all the other stuff that still
showing up. The little zings and stings that are still occurring to try to
delay or stop the onslaught of open source.

I started early, never registered...it's been a great and interesting few years.

So many memories...and, judging from the news lately, more battles ahead for
open source. But PJ, you have run your race and the SCO scam has been revealed
for what it was. It's extremely doubtful that those behind tSCOg will be able
to pull anything like that again.

Thank you for guiding us through the legal thickets, providing both a meeting
place and a learning place, but most of all for refusing to let them get away
with what they were trying to do. Thanks also for showing us that the legal
system in this country doesn't always work the way we'd hope it would. Perhaps
there is a good reason for this, but the way I see it, a good housecleaning
might be in order. It appears that the larger your corporation is, the more
often it can get a "pass". Perhaps that will change. I hope so.
Blogs like yours will help make that happen.

Enjoy your well-deserved rest and make sure to wear that red dress!

Peter

There is still room for a well regarded legal site for OSS issue discussion...

PJ, I have been following Groklaw for a long time.

I understand and respect your decision.

Several years down the line, what would matter is not the money we made or who
we worked for or the designation we held etc. What would count is whether we
could change the lives of others around us.

You can be satisfied that you did change quite a few lives; you can be further
satisfied that the changes were for better; "for greater common good".
Remember that in future, do not rest on your laurels or your past deeds.

Have a nice time.

That said, so long and thanks for all the fish. You did a great job.

PJ,

First, let me add to the chorus of "Thank You's" for everything you
have accomplished with this effort.

And then let me suggest that we should all view this as not an ending, but a
passing of the baton. The need for efforts like Groklaw will not go away. One
of your closing articles should be a handbook of technology law blogging. We
will need it.

For me, this calls to mind the passing of Jon Postel, in that when he left us,
what for him had been a part-time job was taken over by a committee. We may be
in a similar situation -- we need a small army to back-fill for PJ's departure.

PJ: Enjoy life.

Inevitable
Authored by: tiger99 on Sunday, April 10 2011 @ 02:20 PM EDT
PJ, you have done a greatfantastic job, and everyone here except the nastiest trolls thanks you for it. Consider some of your achievements.
  • Exposing the truth about SCO, when many of us initially would have thought that IBM were in the wrong.
  • Setting standards of journalistic integrity and accuracy which are rarely exceeded, anywhere, even by professional journalists.
  • Keeping Groklaw substantially free of the nasty stuff which you have allowed us to glimpse earlier today, such that it is one of the few blogs which should not offend anyone.
  • Educating us about several aspects of the law, including copyright, patents, court procedure and lots more.
  • As a side effect of the main theme, providing a platform on which have been aired many fascinating off-topic subjects. People have learned a lot from that.
  • Again, providing a platform for people to advocate the use of Linux and FOSS, and help one another with problems.
  • Exposing the illegal and/or incompetent actions of certain people such as the RIAA, who have sought to have ludicrously high fines imposed on ordinary people for relatively minor offences.
  • Exposing the continuing, wilful misconduct of the vilest, most pervasive Monopoly which has ever existed, via the Comes transcripts and other things.
  • And very much more......
PJ, you have devoted a substantial portion of your time to Groklaw. You made a difference. Many people never do, sadly. We all know that such a pace is unsustainable in the long term. Yet despite the threats, the rantings of Merkey, McBride, Wallace, the unwarranted intrusion attempt on behalf of the MOGster, the third-rate "journalistic" opposition of Pretenderle, Didiot and Brown, and many other things, you did not deviate from exposing truth. For sheer persistence and determination alone, you deserve a truly massive award.

But no-one can keep up such a pace for ever, and in a way I am glad that you are bringing it all to an end. You have your life, and your family, and friends, and health, and many other things to consider. No-one here should be complaining that Groklaw is ending. If any complainer thinks that you should carry on, let them try with their own blog, and let us see how long they last, or how soon it degenerates into a slanging match like Slashdot.....

Finally PJ, thank you for tolerating me. You had to reprimand me, or even moderate my posts, far too many times when I went overboard, usually by expressing my view of Gates or Ballmer in an unacceptable way. I did learn eventually, so I think you would make a great teacher.

PJ, thank you for everything, have a great future, and enjoy life without the pressure of Groklaw. I am sure we all look forward to whatever other less strenuous projects you undertake in the future.

Thanks for all this time, PJ! Back when I found Groklaw I read every single
article. I have learnt so much from here. Both tech-legal stuff (so comforting
seeing that there are also law geeks! it is not just us programmers) and also
how a person can take ownership of some big, public piece of work, do it
wonderfully and be acclaimed by all, and still keep humility and dignity.

Good luck on your next project. We will miss you.

You're getting a lot of kudos, and well deserved. You have a great deal of skill
and and obsessive desire to get at the heart of the matter. Not that I always
agree with you ;) but I respect you, PJ.

But since this will be the last chance to comment...

I think part of your personality in making Groklaw a success is also a tragedy.
Unwilling or unable to delegate and manage, when you could have a lot more
resources and accomplish much more if you didn't feel the need to do absolutely
everything. Nobody can always see to every detail; you've got to sleep sometime.
Well, I figured this day would come sooner. But good luck in your future career.

PJ:

I was never much of a fan, and have been much antagonised by your attitudes over
the years ... and much more by calumnies and sometimes outright vandalism by
your more ardent followers which it seemed to me you at least tacitly
encouraged.

And while I think that, particularly later on, others may have been able to do
better, and there were better courses you could have taken, I have always
acknowledged and respected that early on, when it made the greatest difference -
and though we'll never know for sure I much, I think it did make a meaningful
difference - you were the one providing a bridge of understanding from the legal
world to the linux and technical world.

Others may, later, have been able to do better. But you were the one who did
it, grinding out the work that needed doing. That counts vastly more than
"could have".

So I'm here to say "Thanks" for what you have done, and offer my best
wishes for the future.

So Long, with all our blessings!
Authored by: Observer on Sunday, April 10 2011 @ 05:11 PM EDT
Reading between the lines, I hear one more reason:

"I'm tired."

That's not jaded or angry or disillusioned or hurt or scared or spiteful. It's just plain tuckered out. You've done a huge service for the community, and I can imagine that you will continue to contribute in other ways, but you can only run a race for so long before you need to take a rest.

PJ, You go with our blessings. I know a lot of people will sorely miss you, but I know even I have gone from reading the site several times a day to more like a couple times a week, and even then mostly to catch up on the news links. We are losing a real gem in the Linux community, but maybe it's time to discover the NEXT gem. There is certainly no lack of battles to be won, and underhanded tactics to uncover, but others will need to step up.

One of the funny things about Open Source is that every individual matters, but no one individual caries all the weight, and the community has the capability to move on even when a pivotal individual leaves. (er... at least that's the theory...)

Blessings to you PJ! Thank you for all you have given us.

A Song for PJ
Authored by: cricketjeff on Sunday, April 10 2011 @ 06:35 PM EDT
PJ

"She doesn't exist", "she's a corporate fix",
"She's only Big Blue getting up to its tricks,"
"She can't be a person, she's too much to say",
But we know she's real, she's our friend she's PJ.

When SCO starting spouting its bundles of lies
We needed a home for the "thousands of eyes"
We needed to know what the documents say
So Groklaw was born, and it's Mum was PJ.

The fools tried to bluster and build up the fud
They spread tons of BS and gallons of crud
But we heard some wisdom and truth every day
The voice is the corner belonged to PJ

The lawyers involved always came to the site
To know if they needed to curse her all night
They read every word and the worst ones said "Nay"
We won't tell the truth we'll just slander PJ

And year after year things have ground on and on
While SCO squandered money, now all of it's gone
If you play the system you won't have to pay
But you will be seen by the likes of PJ

Explaining the system to geeks is the plan
And geekdom to lawyers whenever she can
A small private blog? No that won't be your way
True leaders are born and one such is PJ

But now it is time for our great one to rest
She's shown that some judges can rise to the test
So put on your red dress and head off and play
While we will applaud and give thanks to PJ!

It saddens me to hear this, PJ, but you have to do what's
best for you, and only you know what that is. Groklaw
doesn't go away with this decision. It just transforms from
an insightful blog to an invaluable reference.

I don't know what your plans are after May 16th. However, I
think I speak for most of the old-timers here, and many of
the newer folk, that if you ever need us again, you know how
to find us. We will always be here for you, just like
you've always been there for us.

I've been here in one form or another since almost the
beginning, and a registered user since December 2003.
Groklaw has been a part of my daily reading since then, even
if I haven't been able to post as much as I'd like (this
will be #573), and I even have a picture of the SCO-Novell
judgement taped to my wall, with the relevant parts
highlighted. I've learned so much about the law from you,
that I can't begin to convey my gratitude.

So no goodbyes, just see ya later...

Normally I parody others or use humor to make fun of the obvious FUD that has
come out at times during this long saga, but in this case, I think the group
Green Day captures my feelings perfectly, so with great respect to them:

Time of Your Life - By Green Day

Another turning point;
a fork stuck in the road.

Time grabs you by the wrist;
directs you where to go.

So make the best of this test
and don't ask why.

It's not a question
but a lesson learned in time.

It's something unpredictable
but in the end it's right.
I hope you had the time of your life.

So take the photographs
and still frames in your mind.

Hang it on a shelf
In good health and good time.

Tattoos of memories
and dead skin on trial.

For what it's worth,
it was worth all the while.

It's something unpredictable
but in the end it's right.
I hope you had the time of your life.

(music break)

It's something unpredictable
but in the end it's right.
I hope you had the time of your life.

It's something unpredictable
but in the end it's right.
I hope you had the time of your life.

PJ,

I am saddened to hear this - Groklaw was incredibly exciting to watch. I've
learned a lot about more sections of US law than I ever hoped to avoid exposure
to, and any fears about merits of SCOs case were quickly replaced by contempt
for their shenanigans. You did a truely outstanding job in refuting and exposing
SCOs mischief even though we may now never get to expose the 'men behind the
curtain'.

Life goes on, Linux has matured a lot in response to these threats and as new
threats appear to be more at the patents level I can see your point. New threats
call for a different sort of experts, and there's too much big money involved
now for it to be a community issue first and foremost. I still hope some of the
Groklaw community will carry on the torch and see this new chapter in the saga
through.

I wish you all the best for your new projects and new focus. I'm sure there's
life after Groklaw :-) Am I guessing right there now won't be a book about the
whole saga?

Should you ever need any help of the geeky sort, just ask. Many have offered
their help already, let me add just ome more voice to the chorus. And if you
ever happen to be in the wider Auckland/NZ area, buying you a coffee or a beer
is the least I can do. I'd really appreciate it.

Blimey - where to start. Simply that there can never be enough words to express
my thanks for all your work on this
whole saga.

I remember turning to Groklaw back in 03 as a sane voice vs
the SCO media FUD blitz. At the time I knew SCO were lying
but had little hope that truth and justice would prevail. Truth *may* have -
but justice for IBM and Novell ?

Regardless the reality is that your (and everyone else's)
hard work here has allowed the Linux community to continue
to blossom as it has over the last 8 years.

Groklaw has been a daily read of mine for so long and
although I have generally been a lurker it is has been so
very useful.

Thank you once again PJ. May your future endeavours be as successful and bring
you joy.

I wish you all the best in getting back to your life and thank you for the tremendous and wonderful work you accomplished through Groklaw

However, I must say that no matter how big and strong and successful the Googles and Red Hats in the Free/Open Source community become, freedom only remains free when there's a light of truth constantly shining in the darkness.

As long as there are Microsofts and SCOs in this world, no one is truly free just to create good technology - vigilance is a never-ending battle.

As they have proven time and time again Microsoft (and SCO) don't believe in competition, meritocracy and all the other principles by which we are all supposed to operate.

In parting, I truly hope someone out there will pick up the torch and continue the work you began. In the spirit of freedom (not as in beer) and Open Source, it would be fantastic if Groklaw were truly an "Open Source" entity and continue on in supporting this great community of ours no matter who is at the helm.

Sincerely, Al Butler Custom Desktop Solutions

Pj, We all owe you a big debt of gratitude for what you have accomplished. We know you never wanted to take on such a large project such as Groklaw, but your were unselfish and gave a good part of your life for the betterment of everyone that took the time to listen to your wisdom. Everyone here had the opportunity to learn something from a world outside of our own, and we hope that some of the Legal Eagles out there also benefited from the bringing together of these two very different worlds. It was a huge undertaking with a lot of personal sacrifice on your part. We ar humbled by your willingness to give.

Groklaw gave many of us a purpose. Through your efforts we now realize that we can help make a difference by doing research and helping those that need this information to fight the greedy individuals who would otherwise take advantage of good Samaritans in our industry. The little people can help if given a proper voice. For many of us we followed GL, even some like myself on an hourly basis, just hoping for a chance to make even a small contribution.

Though I am happy for you in your personal decision to 'get your life back' I do wish for one last thing. There will be many of us loyal GL enthusiast who will be looking for another avenue where we can volunteer to help make a difference, to go where GL left off. My question, and my hope, is for one more article, which would be directed at where our future efforts would be best served. Perhaps the EFF has a forum? Could they build one where we could volunteer? Or perhaps there is a Law School with interests in Open Software or Intellectual property? You have built up such a large following of volunteers it would be a shame for us to just wander off in disparate directions, lost with no purpose or sense of direction. If you have any words of wisdom on how we can best serve in the footsteps of your own idealistic quest then please give us some thoughts on how to best proceed.

We will all miss you greatly. I was always hoping and waiting to pitch in for the 'Red Dress Fund', or even more recently a 'Vacation Fund', but I can see little chance of that now. I only hope that one day we can somehow serve and give back a little something that you can appreciate nearly as much as we appreciated all your own hard work and devotion. Should you ever get out to the Baltimore/DC area I would be honored if you could look me up, but with the personal threats over the past few years I can understand how that couldn't really happen. That's sad. I guess this is where I should jump up and sing 'To Sir With Love', though somehow I would have to replace 'Sir' with something a little more appropriate. I guess its the thought that counts. We all honor you, and wish you all the best of everything that life can bring.

You are a remarkable leader and catalyst who has led us all on a remarkable journey of discovery. It could never have happened without you, and I'm grateful for the prodigious effort, care, concern, and sheer talent and persistence you have infused into Groklaw. You have built a legacy of which you should be very proud. I believe the rest of us have become richer, wiser, and more caring because of you. Never doubt that you have made a huge positive impact on this poor world of ours.
I wish you health, love, and wealth, and the time to savor them. May all your dreams come true.

Just want to say I'm impressed by your stamina and enthusiasm for the subject
you have championed so ably for so long. And I've learned a thing or two along
the way as well, so, thanks for that too. I will miss Groklaw's unique
perspective.

I still lack your faith in the US legal system. But it has been good to hear
from the perspective of one who still can hold onto some optimism about it. Good
luck with your groklaw-retirement, and I hope you are able to achieve all the
goals you have in mind.

"Nom de plume" memories

PJ...

This site was one of the first outings for my "nom de
plume", 'brindafella'. I now realise that I can always point
to the site's history as a record of that name's use on the
'net.

I was an "early adopter" of Groklaw, and have avidly
followed the changes and machinations of the various cases,
but mostly SCO-hell.

I will also keep on with Comes; it's fascinating to look
through the M$ history.

Thanks for the memories, and the discretion. Maybe we can
both "come out" from behind out nom de plumes at some
point...... or not :-)

Thanx for the work done

Hi PJ.

At first, thanx for those many years of great work you did, and kudos to all the
ones who helped, going to trials, writing reports, and so on...
As a french engineer, I'm more used to read technical english than legal
english, and sometimes I had to ask an english teacher of my friends to help.
However, this helped me enhance my english level.
You are one of the people who counts. For sure, at this time, no twisted
politician or CEO can do a step forward to taking on the world, without being
spotted at first by some community over Internet.
This looooooooooooong SCO stuff is not ended though, I'm waiting for the last
trial where SCO's bankrupcy will end. Sorry for the straight ones who worked for
them, but sometimes in a life, one can ride the wrong horse.

I remember, a long time ago, how we started to truat and help eachother.
Where you were stubborn enough to take a stand. I did my little work
fighting against software patents in Europe, you helped us get the word
out.

Now I work for Red Hat and I am still a regular reader and we still have
our email conversations. It was a rollercoaster ride so far. With ups and
downs and a lot of fun!

I promised you there is always a beer waiting for you whenever you are in
Munich. And there is always a red fedora waiting fr you to ombine with the
red dress.

Words can't describe what I want to say to you, so I'll simply say
THANKS. May your crusade for a better world never end. And whereever
and whenever we meet again, I am your biggest fan. And friend.

So say we all!

PJ,

Thanks for all the hard work.

I've always thought of Groklaw as two things. First as a
tool to fight SCO, sure. But more importantly, a social
platform for legal activism.

Groklaw, in my mind, would serve as a framework for any
court cases that struck a critical mass of Internet users.

I would suggest you sell the "business" to someone willing
to create a social site allowing anyone to "create a case"
to document and follow. This person and group is probably
already here. Their start would be to create a business
plan.

I believe that what you have done is a seed of change
allowing the people more say in justice. That, in my
opinion, is even more important than a stunning success in
your marvelous SCO work.

Thanks for your time.

I started reading Groklaw back in 2003 when it for some time looked like SCO's accusations were going to kill Linux and Free Software. You helped to keep up the hope and separate truth from FUD. I must admit I probably I spent much more time on Groklaw, and sites I found through it that was healthy for me... checking it many times daily. In recent years sometimes even a week has passed between visits, but I still enjoy the site and have contributed an occasional comment. I am sad to see the updates stop, but I understand why you want to do other things, and it is better to end the site in a controlled fashion. I hope Groklaw will stay on as an archive, and that there will be other sites to carry on the torch. Thanks, PJ!

Well, PJ, I understand your reasoning. Words cannot express
the all thank you's for all that you have done for the Linux
and FLOSS communities.

Groklaw was a great place to "meet" and have both stupid and
intelligent discussions with persons from all around the
globe; all who had one thing in common: the love and burning
desire for true freedom of choice and creativity.

I am not young, but I am not all that old either. But the
one thing I have witnessed in my lifetime is the insidious
loss and errosion of many of the freedoms that citizens all
around the world have come to expect, all for the sake of
making some very greedy individuals weathy. The very
disappointing part of this is that the very same
governments that proclaim to place their citizens first
seem to be saluting this march to enslavement.

I can only hope that as Groklaw passes on, that someone
else also posseses the extraordanary talents, insights,
and tenaciousness that PJ has demonstrated in the quest
to expose to the light of day the immense evil and dangers
that businesses like SCO and Microsoft pose to not only
software freedom, but to freedom of choice and freedom
of creativity as well.

A very humble thank you.

I do believe that we will need at least one (if not more)
replacements for GrokLaw for who, without this kind of
viewership, how will we be the watchers?

To be frank, Linux and FOSS are the free lunch that Google
chose to base their profits on and they do not have any more
morality than, say, MicroSoft, since the company has
"interests"... all of which, under the urging of bean-
counters waving spreadsheets, can be elevated above the
"ideals".

So I will miss GrokLaw.

Mind you, we will need a reasonably autonomous replacement
for GrokLaw to keep the players in the post-SCOurGe world
honest.

"Thank you" seems like about a hundredth of what I should be
saying for the unbelievable amount of effort you put into
this, and the real, positive results it had. You've earned a
place in computing history, and while that may not keep the
lights on, I hope it will lead to things that do, and that you
love doing.

Don't mind us. Go live your life. It's the least you
deserve.

I'm sure there were many in Rome back in the day who wanted Cincinattus to stay
on a bit longer: like him, you've done your job and now step down to return to
"the real world".

Thank you for your tireless efforts to deconstruct the FUD, puncture the PR
hot-air balloon, and teach us techies a bit of the inner workings of the legal
world. Exposing the BSD settlement, cutting the FUD foundations of SCOsource
out from under the SCOundrels, and detailing the Novell-Santa Cruz agreement to
show those copyrights might not have transferred after all, were sterling
moments. Thank you.

Good luck in whatever you go on to (I'll join the chorus: WE WANT THE BOOK!!),
and know you have made yourself a host of "friends you haven't met
yet".

You efforts for the pass years were an eye opener. The legal system is clearly
not what most people think it is. This hold true for many countries, not just
the US.

SCO is dead. But while they didn't get what they wanted, they got away with way
more that they had any rights to.

8 years of judicial battles with NOTHING. I am still shocked that it was even
allowed.

We heard about this case because SCO went after Linux, a highly defended public
domain property.

But the way things happened tells me that this is "business as usual"
in court. How many cases turn out like this?

Nothing will change unless people wake up. Waking up people means educating
them. It's a hard job. You did more in 8 years than most people do in their life
time.

Groklaw is an impressive work. Thank you PJ.

Remember that when I started Groklaw, I had no intention to create something as huge as Groklaw became. I really was just trying to learn how to blog.
But you ended up teaching the world how it should be done. I've just read through all the postings on this article, and noted addresses around the planet. The interesting thing is that so many of us feel as if we are friends too, so I have a lump in my throat when I write, thank you for all your hard work, and I wish you joy in whatever you choose to do next.

PJ,

While your insights will certainly be missed, and there's no lack of material
with the Sony cases, the multi-front attack on Android, and the media cartels'
attempts to keep us from our music/movies/etc., NO ONE can blame you for wanting
a life back. Like Cincinattus, you've done your job and now you want to go back
to your real life.

By skewering the PR and digging up strategic documents, this site torpedoed the
SCOsource effort and demonstrated "there's no 'there' there".

Thank you, and know you have thousands of 'friends you haven't met yet' out
there who appreciate what you've done. I will add to the chorus on one item
though: WE WANT THE BOOK.

November Rain

Well, I greet this Monday as many others hearing that something I have
cherished is no more. The Far Side, Calvin and Hobbes, Isaac Asimov,
Heinlein, all have retired or moved on to other dimensions. And now Groklaw.

I've been reading Groklaw longer than my youngest child has been alive. I
don't think that there is anywhere in the news with the same level of integrity

and in depth analysis. Not just a blog, but an example of what the internet
could be. . . but knowing my fellow humans, probably won't be. Too much
spam and astroturf.

Well, it has been a nice, long ride, and one that I didn't think would last this

long. So for me this is a bitter sweet parting, and I know that I will click
back
here again and again hoping perhaps that something will have changed.

Good luck to you all, and thank you for all of the wonderful new, analysis and
commentary.

A "Nobody"?
Authored by: Anonymous on Monday, April 11 2011 @ 09:28 PM EDT
That you shall never be, my dear lady!

You will probably not admit to it but I feel that you and your team of tireless
workers have been as important to the survival of Linux as Linus and the kernel
dev crew. You appeared at a time when you were most needed, and brought the
perfect set of skills to address that need. I think it fair to say that SCO,
empowered by bogus "Unix license" payments from Microsoft and Sun,
would have buried Linux under legal claims and and license scams without your
momentous work. The lawyers who scoured your site and used your work in court
would agree.

I suspect that an annual "PJ Award" will be created to honor those who
follow in your foot steps, although they may never be able to fill your shoes.

Enjoy your much earned rest. No one deserves it more.

Thank you PJ for all the hard work that you have done on Groklaw to help to get
the truth out there. Like many here I will be very sad to see it go but people
are more important than things (or websites) and you need a rest from all this.

Also a huge thanks to all the other helpers (like MathFox) who have helped to
make this site what it is.

The fight against corrupt corporations and FUD will (of course) go on on other
websites but Groklaw is/was the best of course :) I feel proud to have been a

PJ,

I apologize I have not done more, but have been following you pretty
regularly anonymously almost the whole time. Enough is enough and if anyone
deserves a break, you do. Thank you for everything you've done.

My problem is I don't know where I will go to get the real scoop on the
coming battles. Linux is under attack now more than ever before. SCO may be a
smoldering ashes, I wouldn't call it a smoking crater, but there are an awful
lot of lose ends left dangling. I understand you can't let the good name of
Groklaw be diluted, so I don't expect to see someone else take over the banner.
And I know Groklaw is being archived in the Library of Congress.

I feel it is important for the continuity of the coverage to continue. So I
will be watching for where the Groklaw Community re-settles.

Thank you PJ for all the effort and hard work you have put
into this project. It was (and still is) an important
projects, and I believe you have something achieved that you
are not even aware of yourself.

Not only has there been a balancing flow of information
about these important issues (not only for the FLOSS
community, but in fact for anybody), but I believe you have
also shown to many people who have been totally ignorant to
the legal system, how important it is to be informed about
it.

Around the same time you started Groklaw, I decided, after
working for a long time in the IT industry and starting to
get involve in the FLOSS community, to pursue a law degree
in the evenings. I have to say, between Groklaw and the
studies my eyes have been opened.

While I am very happy that you concluded this huge
achievement called Groklaw, and as it seems, you are looking
forward for a new project that hopefully gives you a lot of
joy, I am also sad that this very important flow of
information will stop in about a month. However, I believe
the effect will stay with us forever.

Hopefully, some others will find some time do jump into the
gap. Nobody will ever be able to replace you, however, times
are also changing and it will be interesting to see new
concepts that will fill the gap that your conclusion of
Groklaw will open.

I also have a suggestion. Let's have an annual "event", some
form of online gathering to celebrate the achievements of
Groklaw. The work has been done, it is important to
recognize and celebrate the achievements on a regular basis.

I wish you all the best in your upcoming endeavors! And also
remind yourself that a person can do a lot of good for
others when they just put their mind onto it.

Thank you so much for all you have done for us!

Groklaw Articles Ending on May 16th
Authored by: Anonymous on Tuesday, April 12 2011 @ 12:37 PM EDT
When I first come upon Groklaw,it was fun. SCO was suing IBM for copying code
from Unix into Linux. Proving or disproving code copying was a challenge, a
programmers' puzzle. There were some dubious legal theories put forth by SCO.

Then Novell got into the action with its claims of copyright ownership. We
picked apart the exact meanings of words in the APA. Red Hat launched a similar
suit.

Most recently, SCO took refuge in bankruptcy court. The stalling in bankruptcy
court is not fun. I am following the case because I am already hooked and I
want to know how it all turns out. Will anybody get paid except SCO's lawyers?
What will become of the IBM case? Will there ever be a court decision saying
that Linux does not violate copyrights?

When Groklaw started covering Google, Oracle, Sony, patents, etc. I realized
the coverage was getting too broad for one person to follow.

PJ, you could drop the newspicks and all but the SCO-related cases. There would
be only two or three bits of activity a month. We would still get to see how it
ends.

I also appreciate the ability to post anonymously without registration. I never
understood why some websites want visitors to register in order to read free
content. You must have tons of spam to filter out.

You have provided a wonderful service. I hope you find something as interesting
in the future.
