Thankfully, "Silver" began right where "Diamonds" left off. Though not as much excitement was induced as "Diamonds" (not as much action). I felt a little more emphasis on romance (again, kisses, hugs, feelings, but nothing more) than I cared for but there was still a very strong message. Of surrender. Of trust. Of truth.

Rohesia's wisdom was beautiful. I loved her conversation with Gwyn.

I did NOT like the ending!! ;) Book three has some very important things to resolve!

Quotes:
“Faith cannot be bartered or shoved or forced.”

“I was waiting for what I thought was the better thing. And God gave me what was truly best.”

What good did it do to have figuratively sat at the feet of scholars when I knew little about sitting at the feet of the Lord as Rohesia said Jesus’ followers had literally done?

I tilted my head back, reminding myself he was my friend, and friends do not break friends’ noses.

Her smile deepened yet again. “What else are mothers for?” Touching her shoulder, I said, “Praying.”

This sequel to "Sound of Diamonds" follows immediately from where the first ends. It's frustrating in parts because of the incredible obstacles that Dirk and Gwyn have to overcome, and several times it looks almost impossible for there to ever be a good ending. It's neat to have both characters having scenes in first person, so you can feel the two perspectives up-front and see the emotions each goes through. I have to say, I loved meeting Dirk's mother, Rohesia! Quite the strong lady.

On to the next book...

So after quite enjoying The Sound of Diamonds by Rachelle Rea, I was looking forward to continuing on with The Sound of Silver! As you can see from my three-star rating, I didn't like this book as much as the first ... but don't let that stop you from reading this series! If you enjoy romance, of the Christian historical genre, then you should definitely give the STEADFAST LOVE series a try.

It's set in the medieval/renaissance era, and follows characters Dirk and Gwyneth on various journeys of danger and faith.

The Sound of Silver starts where the first book leaves off. Our main characters are at Dirk's family's home ... and there's tension between the couple. I felt like this book focused mainly on the romance between Dirk and Gwyn. There definitely wasn't as much action as Book One. And if you know me, I personally prefer action and excitement with a generous dash of sweet romance ... haha. Anyway, it was just a slower story; not necessarily a bad thing, just not my taste as much. I usually don't choose to read books that are solely romance, but if that's your cup of tea, do pick up The Sound of Silver.

Once again, we had a theme of faith, which is always wonderful to find! We found some saddening troubles and tension between a beloved secondary couple; and meet a man named Anders, (who, I must say, I didn't really like!)

Ultimately, though The Sound of Silver wasn't my favorite book, these characters have found their way into my heart one way or another, and I find myself eagerly awaiting to see how their story finishes in The Sound of Emeralds!

"If hope sounded like diamonds, surely truth sounded like silver, the truth of the promise of a new life."

Lady Gwyneth Barrington and Lord Devon Godfrey are both fleeing towards a new life, with all their heart, soul, mind and strength; Gwyneth desperately searching for a means by which to clear the name of her beloved, especially since her anguished words had branded him as a murderer. A recent convert from Catholicism to Christianity, "faith was no longer about empty rules, . . . .it was about a love that saw me through . . . "

Devon "Dirk" Godfrey has just escorted his beautiful Gwyneth to the secure sanctuary of Godfrey Estate, knowing that leaving her behind with his family will break her heart, but will keep her safe from his scarred reputation. Until his name can be cleared, possibly never, he cannot risk the consequences of association.

Romanticism permeates this lovely tale with the unabashed quality of a Shakespearean drama. Two souls bare before each other; loving fiercely, hurting deeply and hoping fervently, that the end of the story will be much different than the beginning.

I was provided with a copy of this book from the author. The above opinion is entirely my own.

Age Appropriate For: 15 and up for romance and mild violence
Best for Ages: 15 and up

I was so excited to finally read the second book in this series. I actually sat down one Sunday and read straight through them. It was a great way to see the story woven together, but it also makes the details of the books blend together. I am sorry for any blending in my brain that has taken place.

Dirk still seeks to clear his name, but he faces a lot of obstacles. I love how he is drawn to Gwyn, yet wants to save her from his reputation. So many heroes don’t hesitate to bring the girl they love into danger with them, so it was nice to see Dirk trying to protect Gwyn.

Speaking of protecting Gwyn, she didn’t make it easy. As in the last book, sometimes she did her own thing, which put her in danger. Sometimes I wanted to shake her for being stupid, but most of the time I just adored how much she cared about the people around her.

This story was so good that I couldn’t wait to start the next book… and so I didn’t. I dove right into it.

I highly recommend this book to those who love historical fiction, mild romance, and lots of exciting twists.

I LOVED this book you guys! It was beautifully feels crushing. I also hated one of the characters so much…but I’ll get there in a second. I gotta make sure this all makes sense so one thing at a time.

So, I loved this book a lot! The feel of it was very very different compared to book one as there was a lot less action and this focused a lot on the emotional journeys of the wonderful characters Rachelle has crafted but even though there was a lot less action I was very pleased. (The romance novel loving side of me adored this book a lot for the reason that is ROMANCE <3 )

Not only did I adore this book, but it absolutely destroyed my heart okay? The feels were definitely present in this book. As usual I also adore the characters. Dirk is kinda my favourite. I love him a lot. I also LOVE Gwyn she is the absolute best and therefore I love Dirk and Gwyn together…. and talking about these characters brings me to a new character…and *yells* I HATE HIS GUTS! *takes deep breath* *clears throat* Okay… Where was I? Oh right. So, that character is named Anders and I have one word that described him. That word is: Ship-Wrecker.

*clears throat* Anyways. That aside this book was absolutely wonderful. The characters were amazingly beautiful (except Anders. Don’t like him. Nope Nope Nope) and let me just say the ending for this book was a terrible cliffhanger I wanted to cry. Let me just say book 3 has a lot to clear up now.

Rachelle's done it again with this superb sequel to The Sound of Diamonds. Continuing the story of Gwyn and Dirk, the story takes you on a rollercoaster of emotions. The back cover blurb above hints at a separation--and how. The depth Rachelle has poured into her characters as they both wrestle with their newfound faith and hearts broken by love is immense.

The same supporting cast of characters is in Silver, as well as Dirk's mother and two sisters and a new man on the scene who is not all that he seems. What I loved about Silver was that, while there was certainly less action and adventure compared to Diamonds, Rachelle maintained the pace and nothing lagged at all. It was refreshing, the slight change of pace, because as the reader is immersed into Gwyn and Dirk's world, we get to see more vividly how they process everything and grow individually and together.

This book has an especially happy ending. I can't give it away, but I will say one thing--don't rush through the reading to get to the end. Enjoy the rich imagery of the story, the journey the characters take, and the love of God that surpasses all understanding woven through every page.

The Sound of Silver begins right where The Sound of Diamonds finished, even backing up just a bit to refresh our memories. The level of intensity does not fade between the two books, even though Silver focuses far less on action than did Diamonds. In fact I think the emotion in Silver makes it even more intense in some ways than its predecessor; I remained just as much on the edge of my seat in book 2, albeit for different reasons. Rachelle Rea certainly knows how to capture her characters' innermost desires and fears, sorrows and joys.

All the familiar characters that could return do, with the wonderful additions of Dirk's mother Rohesia and his sisters. I loved them immediately and looked forward to their scenes with Gwyn. Part of the reason that Silver's intensity level remains on par with Diamonds despite the reduced amount of action is the introduction of a fourth new character into the mix. Let me just say... nope, actually if I say that, I'll spoil some things for you... so I won't. But... yeah.

I will say this: do not be lulled at any point into thinking you can relax. At. Any. Point. (Do I make myself clear?) Remember there is a third book forthcoming. It's like ... have you ever watched NCIS? Their season finales - always cliffhangers. The kind that make you groan "nooooooooooooooooo" out loud at the television, as though it can do anything about your agony. In that way, The Sound of Silver reminds me of an NCIS season finale :)

Bottom Line: Rachelle Rea has a beautifully poignant way with words that draws you in and refuses to release you until the story ends. (Which, I remind you again, it still hasn't!) Since The Sound of Silver is book two in a series and, as mentioned, begins immediately after the events of the first novel, it would be best if you read The Sound of Diamonds first. But if for some reason you can't, Rea does a good job of organically catching you up and giving you the necessary background information. If you like Melanie Dickerson's medieval fairy tale retellings or Jody Hedlund's medieval romances, you will love the Steadfast Love series!

In just the few months between the release of The Sound of Diamonds and The Sound of Silver I could tell upon the first pages of her sophomore novel that Rea’s skill with the written word truly is a gift—she holds a knack for the craft that easily transcends the pages of her novels. Whereas The Sound of Diamonds encapsulates readers with the terror of escaping the Iconoclastic Fury, The Sound of Silver relies less upon action and much more upon emotion and personal growth. I found The Sound of Silver a compelling read because I enjoy delving into a character’s motivations, inspirations, and faith. In this second novel of the series, I felt connected to the main characters as I travelled along with through their individual journeys towards love and happiness. As Gwyn and Dirk struggled to make peace with their places in life, I experienced their joys, frustrations, and struggles. Rea’s ability to completely immerse me into The Sound of Silver world makes her novel shine all the brighter.

I recommend The Sound of Silver for those readers who love to travel back in time for lessons in history that don’t ever make you feel like you’ve returned to the classroom. This novel is for those who enjoy romance filled with faith.

A few months back I had read and reviewed The Sound of Diamonds, Rachelle Rea Cobb's first book from ‘The Steadfast Love’ Series and had found it compelling. I was moved after reading it and was eager to know the future events in line for the protagonists and how those would shape their lives.

ABOUT The Sound of Silver

The stalwart saint and the redeemed rebel. One fights for faith, the other for honor…

After Dirk rescues Gwyneth from the Iconoclastic Fury, she discovers that faith is sometimes fragile—and hope is not as easy as it may seem. Gwyneth continues her quest to learn more about the love of God preached by Protestants she once distrusted.

My take on The Sound of Silver

I was very much taken with Dirk (Devon Godfrey) And Gwyn’s (Gwyneth Barrington) love and their story after I had finished with ‘The Sound of Diamonds’ and indeed did not know what to expect. I was happy and excited that they had found each other and recognised the love they held for each other; at the same time I was wary of the hinted mistake that was to take place and kept my fingers crossed hoping that no sorrow or despair befalls them.

It started on a happy note. We are led through all events that have transpired as the story had halted in the final pages of TSoD, and had led to this particular situation where we find ourselves in the current phase of the story.

Dirk and Gwyn are betrothed and happy. Soon as the elation calms down, realisation starts setting in and Dirk understands himself to be completely unworthy of Gwyn’s love and a potential danger to her life and wellbeing.

And then, that which I feared, happens. He decides to take her to safety, under his mother's kind watch at Godfrey Estate, and resume his life in exile. Giving up his only chance to happiness and denying himself and Gwyn the satisfaction of their togetherness, he sets off again to keep his love and his family safe.

Gwyn is completely shattered and so is Dirk. Both face the toughest and most challenging time of their lives.

And believe me, I was affected. It took me an unusually long time to read the book, because the events that occurred in their lives indeed had an affect on mine and I was saddened and didn't feel like moving ahead, I was so involved in the sorrow. Gwyn’s struggles are heart breaking and Dirk suffers with his own grief.

The time apart, I believe, gave them perspective and also the sense of the other's worth. It tested their hopes and faith in God.

After suffering for months and longing for each other, they do unite eventually, and what a reunion it is. Together, Dirk and Gwyn are ethereal. Their belongingness is evident through the minutest of gestures. Hesitant happiness turns to unfathomed joy when Gwyn comes to understand that Dirk intends never to leave her again.

The introduction of Lady Godfrey was a welcome addition to the story, along with Susan. The entry of Anders Revelin, Gwyn’s childhood friend and no well wisher of Dirk, was another aspect in the story. Further, here in TSoS, Cade and Margried face their own challenges and are drifting apart despite their love for one another. Ian’s story from his past is made known, and is touching.

Overall, this instalment of ‘The Steadfast Love’ Series was balanced in characters’ story development, while also being a little slow paced in the middle. While TSoD focused on Gwyn’s background, or rather is set in her world, TSoS is set in what is Dirk’s world. His house, his family and their way of life.

I would surely recommend this to anyone keen on reading good, clean historical fiction.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Times gone by snatch Rachelle Rea Cobb close, so she reads and writes about years long ago--her passions include the Reformation, Revolutions, and romance. Rachelle wrote the Steadfast Love series during college. Five months after she graduated, she signed a three-book deal with her dream publisher, WhiteFire. She's a homeschool grad, Oreo addict, and plots her novels while driving around her dream car, a pick-up truck. In June 2016, she married a man with the same name as her fictional hero, and they live happily ever after in Small Town, South.

Rachelle is a splendid writer and a newlywed! This summer, she married a man with the same first name as the hero of the series!

She really has a skill with the pen, and uses language beautifully to express. The period details are accurate and actually brushed my knowledge a bit!
And it goes without saying that I am keen on getting hands on the author's next works for sure!

I love Gwyn. She can insult others in another language. That’s goals right there, y’all. (I’m kidding, I’m kidding. Mostly. )
Even though by reading about all the kisses in the Sexual Content, you’d think this was pretty kissy, but it truly didn’t feel that way. (Those semi-detailed kisses, are literally just barely over a b/a/n/d kiss.) Just like “The Sound of Diamonds”, I was blown away by all the Spiritual Content in this sequel. It’s so refreshing to see so many prayers & talks about God. The romance was very sweet and well done, but that cliffhanger has me eager to read the finale novel in this trilogy. ;)

Rachelle Rea's second book, The Sound of Silver, is absolutely perfect. It's cozy-time-in-your-nearest-book-nook PERFECT. The story is set at a steady pace of things to laugh at and to cry over, as we watch our favorite heroine and hero (that's Gwyn and Dirk, if you somehow missed Book 1!) try to keep their love afloat amidst the daily turmoil.

In the mid-1500s, a religious war wages on between the Catholics and Protestants all throughout Europe. Within this dramatic time period, our story unfolds in England as the two lovers are torn apart by matters now uncontrollable; matters of murder, double-crossing, and tender devotion. How can Gwyn and Dirk's love survive or ever progress under such hardships?

This book has such a sweet and fragile romance (or perhaps a couple of romances, but I shouldn't tell more), that the reader can't help but root for. The underlying spiritual themes are fantastic with Gwyn and Dirk's faith in God and hope for each other being the only elements still holding them together...

"I drew a deep breath. I had an old soul, Anders said. I was wise. Then why had I done such a despicable thing to the man I loved? I was not wise. I was foolish. The most foolish girl alive." (Chapter 18, The Sound of Silver)

Rachelle Rea's writing style is faultless. Time and again, I just couldn't get over how well her characters spoke in the language of the time -- the phrasing of a sentence giving the reader more insight into the story. And although the vocabulary retains the right kind of time authenticity, there's no Shakespearean terminology, I promise (it's still in the English we know and love!).

It was also such a pleasant surprise for me that many of the characters from Book 1 (The Sound of Diamonds) returned for the sequel -- Captain Tudder, Reverend Joseph, and others. Each of these were endearing the first time I met them, although I hadn't expected to see them again quite so soon. Miss Rea fleshes out her characters well, making you want to learn more about these people that come alive from her writing.

"Sometimes God calls us to walk in circles, eh? Like the Israelites of old around the Jericho wall." (Chapter 25, The Sound of Silver)

Readers who enjoy historical fiction will love The Steadfast Love series. Buy the books for birthday or Christmas gifts this year. You won't be disappointed.

The suspense of waiting to hear how this trilogy comes to an end is overwhelming for me -- but of course, I wouldn't want Book 3 to come too soon, because then I'd have nothing more of this series to look forward to, no?

Rachelle’s debut novel blew me away. Its precise storytelling and quietly compelling plot sort of snuck up on me. It started out great, but as each chapter passed, it became progressively better (and better). Her sophomore novel keeps pace with the first by picking up immediately where book one left off. We catch up with Gwyneth and Dirk immediately following their disastrous encounter at Gwyneth’s ancestral home. Now without a home, Dirk safely sees Gwyneth to his family home where she can be cared for and watched over by his mother and family, but he leaves. You see there is still a price on his life – people who would see him punished for crimes he didn’t commit. This shatters not only Gwyneth and their fledging relationship, but forced Dirk to look at himself and revisit some of the dark things about his past.

Rachelle is a beautiful talent. Not only does she know how to draw a reader into the world (rooted in history without losing the voice of the characters) she’s brilliantly imagined, she knows how to see to the best (and sometimes worst) emotional impact for or of her characters. Gwyneth and Dirk’s story continues to be as tumultuous yet gentle as its hesitant and difficult beginnings. I will admit this novel feels more like a stepping stone between The Sound of Diamonds and the final novel, The Sound of Emeralds, but this in NO way befuddles the loveliness that is ‘Silver.’

Each of Rachelle’s characters has their own unique signatures and personalities. I love that sense of distinction in Rachelle’s writing. There is wisdom to the faith she captures to page as well as the characters. I did think the romance was slightly overplayed (simply considering the amount of time Gwyneth and Dirk had been together), but again, as a romantic, I’m not sure I should be saying that. Either way, the book is lovely; beautiful in a kind of shattered way. Shattered because Dirk is forced to look at his past and face the darker side of his past, and what he know regrets. Shattered because Gwyneth is left feeling like a piece of herself is missing. The beauty of this story is that everyone comes out the other side having thrived separately in spite of broken promises. They feel stronger, which makes the reader all the more captured by what’s to come in the final novel, The Sound of Emeralds.

Sincere thanks to the publisher for providing a complimentary copy of this book for reviewing purposes.

Although Gwyn and Dirk love each other, they still have a lot of problems to overcome if they are ever to marry. First of all, Dirk is still being blamed for the murder of Gwyn’s parents and it will take a bit more than Gwyn’s testimony to clear him of the charge. Then, Dirk decides it would be safer for Gwyn if he left the country, drawing away the danger. Will their love and newfound faith survive the challenges ahead?

The second book in the Steadfast Love Series by Rachelle Rea, The Sound of Silver continues Gwyn and Dirk’s story. Love, danger, and even suffering mold the lives of the characters as they reach out to each other and do their best to follow God’s will for their lives. And finally, their hardships pay off with a joyous ending.

Gwyn and Dirk spend a good portion of the book apart, trying to complete their goals and just survive. It is pretty sad for their romance, as they miss each other dreadfully most of the time, but it gives the author a chance to introduce another handsome gentleman who has known Gwyn all her life and been in love with her for just as long. This of, course, adds a new level of interest to the novel as you wonder whether Gwyn will eventually fall in love with him instead.

A good thing that I noticed was that Gwyn grew so much during this novel. Much of her trauma and grief healed throughout the story. She had other problems to deal with, but she became more stable and confident as a person as well as growing in her faith under the mentorship of an older Christian woman.

On a different note, the setting was obviously well-researched. The historical details of the country’s laws and government, the religious turmoil, the medicine technology, and many other small details makes the story come alive within the culture—as least, as much as it can since no one alive today has actually experienced it.

Overall, The Sound of Silver was a lovely historical romance. I look forward to reading the third book in this series and would recommend it to anyone who enjoys a historical romance—starting with book one, of course!

She fights for faith. He fights for honor.

I read and reviewed The Sound of Diamonds, book one in the Steadfast Love trilogy, back in April, as a part of The Sound of Emeralds anniversary tour. After thoroughly enjoying it, Rachelle was so kind as to offer me a free ebook copy of its sequel in exchange for an honest review (I'm so sorry this took so long in the writing, friend!).

The Sound of Silver picks up immediately where book one left off. Dirk has just rescu-- well, spoilers, m'dear. Spoilers. ;)

Character-wise, loved how much Cade and Ian were further developed! The difference between them was much clearer than before, and I totally ship Cade and Margried and Ian and a certain someone!

However, I felt a great deal less connected to Dirk and Gwyn. I wanted to shake them and another main couple so I could remind them that THEY BELONG TOGETHER! But several of these issues were well resolved, by the end. :D

Though I didn't love The Sound of Silver quite as much as The Sound of Diamonds, don't let my lower rating deter you! If you enjoy Christian romance set in the late middle ages, then I'm sure you'll enjoy this!

You may want to know: There is some detailed kissing, as well as mild violence.

NOTE: As mentioned above, I received a free ebook copy of The Sound of Silver from the author, in exchange for my honest review. All thoughts and opinions expressed are my own. Readers can find my original review at https://merikthorne.blogspot.com/2017....

The Sound of Silver is book two in the Steadfast Love series and begins immediately following book one, The Sound of Diamonds. This story is beautifully written, rich in detail, and emotionally charged! There is a theme that flows throughout the book. It is of surrender. At some points, it is the surrendering of what the character wants most, and at other times, it is the growth in faith of learning to surrender to God.

I loved the emotion in this story! It was hard to see the main characters going through the tough times that occurred, but it was necessary to the plot. The additional, new characters that are introduced in The Sound of Silver added much interest, as well.

I am on pins and needles to see what happens in book three. I absolutely loved the last few chapters of the novel and look forward to visiting with these characters again in the final book of the series.

I received a complimentary copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

OK… I can say this now without fear of spoilers.

I am so thankful Rachelle started book 2 where book 1 left off.

Wondering what I thought of book 2?

LOVE! LOVE! LOVE IT!

Book two of the series is just as fantastic as book one!

Not only do we get to see more romance in The Sound of Silver, Rachelle Rea takes us deeper into the relationship – not only between our characters, but to the world and the people around them.

Book 1, The Sound of Diamonds, was more about rescue . . . and escape. The Sound of Silver is focused on the characters and their journey.

We see quite a lot more about what makes Dirk and Gwyneth tick

Rachelle Rea has definitely found her niche – and yes, I am on the edge of my seat waiting for book 3!

I didn’t like this one as much as the first book. Maybe because Dirk annoyed me by his insisting that his way was right and the only way and it took a long time for someone to be blunt with him about the truth. I was also rather confused about Cade and Margried’s problems. I felt like I was supposed to know things, but never felt like I did. There was also more focus and attention on romance and physical attraction (nothing too descriptive). There was a certain person that I didn’t trust the moment they stepped onto the scene. There were some good parts about trust and letting the Lord direct your paths instead of just doing what you thought was best. There were some times that it felt very choppy because it would switch from Dirk to Gwyn to Dirk and sometimes it was the same scene, and other times it wasn’t.
This book starts as soon as the last book ended.
Overall it was nice to find out what happened next.

Warning: As always, I try to stay relatively spoiler free. But it doesn’t hurt to proceed with caution.

Rating: Three and a half stars—Enjoyable

If any of you were wondering, THE SOUND OF SILVER (by Rachelle Rea) is the sequel to THE SOUND OF DIAMONDS, which I reviewed last week. As I mentioned before, Rea was kind enough to give me e-ARCs of both these books, for which I am extremely grateful. Thank you, Rachelle! So let’s talk about this one.

The Romance. I know that I don’t tend to be much of a romance person (since I’m Vulcan and all), but you’d be surprised by what I might actually enjoy when it comes to love stories. Without giving too much away (hopefully), I will say that the romance in THE SOUND OF SILVER was more satisfying to me than it was in its predecessor. This might result from the heightened tension between the two lovebirds, but it might also come from the impossible odds stacked against them and the difficult decisions they must make. I like that Rea involves risk in the equation, rather than just emotion.

Love Triangle? Okay, there isn’t really a love triangle in here. Or is there? I won’t say too much, but I will say that I love what Rea does with this trope, and I love the way it propels the story along while also providing a bit of a break from the romance between Gwyn and Dirk. (Because, while romance is all well and good, breathers are nice as well.)

Jealousy and Anger. Oh yeah, I’m a fan of the darker emotions (in books though—just to clarify—not so much in real life). Some of the characters in Rea’s cast aren’t huge supporters of Gwyn and Dirk and their decisions. I feel that this adds more depth and honesty, since love is never a bed of roses and life often comes with an angry bee still stuck in its honeycomb (yeah, I should probably stop talking). Anyway, when it comes to fiction, I like my sweet with a little sour, and THE SOUND OF SILVER offers a more balanced mixture than THE SOUND OF DIAMONDS.

Other Tidbits. Again we have the entertaining (and, in this case, suspenseful) issues that accompany some of Gwyn and Dirk’s poor communication. Also, as with the previous installment, the plot picks up the pace around the middle, ensuring that readers will want to pay more attention as they near the end. Rea does do a bit more with Ian and Cade, as well as Margried and Sister Agnes, which I appreciated. I’m always a big fan of getting to know the secondary characters, sometimes even more than the main ones (I’m weird like that), so I was hoping this would be the case.

Repeated Information. As with before, the story does seem to contain more repeated information than is necessary. I’m a little lazy when it comes to Kindle, and I appreciate being reminded of some tidbits from time to time so I don’t have to flip back and check for myself (#somuchwork). But I also have a decent memory for bookish details, which means the author usually only has to tell me something once. After that, I’d rather move on to newer and more interesting stuff.

The People. As for our main characters, I share the same feelings about them now as I did in my review of THE SOUND OF DIAMONDS. Again, I liked seeing them struggle with their beliefs—how to live them, how to reconcile them with other stuff, etc… On a deeper level, I love that a good half of the cast has to struggle with maintaining/surrendering some of the happy feelings from the previous book in order to face reality head on. Rose-tinted glasses are lovely and all, but life isn’t all bubble gum and bottomless coffee cups.

Anders. This guy is great. I think I can really sympathize with his weaknesses and his shortcomings. Yet he might also be the most complex and hard-to-understand guy in the book, because his actions tend toward unpredictability (for reasons I can’t give without spoiling it for you). All in all, I lived for the chapters featuring Anders Revelin.

The Ending. I like cliffhangers. I love cliffhangers. So I was really excited to find that Rea is comfortable with leaving her characters in a lurch for a few months until the final book comes out. (On the other hand, though, I have a bit of a Steadfast Love series hangover, since I got to gobble up the first two books without needing to pause for air. And now I’m stuck waiting for THE SOUND OF EMERALDS. Boo. *pouts*)

All in all, while romance isn’t generally my cup of coffee (see what I did there?), I did still enjoy these two books in my own way, and I don’t regret the time I spent in Rea’s story world. Like I said before, if you are a fan of romance, especially Christian inspirational romance, I think this would probably be right up your ally. And I’m going out on a limb here, because I’m not Rachelle so I can’t know for sure, but I do think that if you’ve read these books and enjoyed them, she would love it if you let her know.

The Plot {5 stars} – As far as the plot line went, The Sound of Silver continually drew me in and led me deeper into the lives of the characters. Rachelle made me feel torn with grief along side the characters as they experienced sorrow, separation, betrayal, and resentment; I also felt their joy as love, forgiveness, truth, and hope was showered upon them. Will Dirk and Gwyn be together again? Will Dirk’s past cause Gwyn to be unsafe? What is the sound of Silver? Oh, those questions will keep you on the edge of your seat until the end of the book.

The Characters {5 stars} – I was happy to see more of Joseph in the story, and more of Cade and Margried. Gwyn began the new book with her prayer from in the dungeons of last book changing her life in ways she didn’t foresee. Her hope and faith in God are strengthened and her questions do not cease, they grow deeper and her quest for Truth had only just started. I loved meeting Dirk’s family, and especially his mother who reminded me of my own. My complaint last book was not getting to hear from the supporting characters as much; my elation with this book is that Rachelle introduced us to new characters, and gave us much insight into the lives of those we met in Diamonds. Dirk, still headstrong at first, sort of made me upset (and according to the story, I wasn’t the only girl who felt this way!) with his stubborn decisions, but in the end, God worked a change into his life, and I was joyful. :)

The Lessons {5 stars} – All the characters dealt with an abundance of varied emotions. Each one was at a different place in their search for God. The lessons that Rachelle wove into the story, whether whispered tenderly from Dirk’s mother or kindly spoken from Brother Joseph, were rich and powerful. The newly blossomed faith of Gwyn brought her hope in the midst of her sorrow and restlessness. Dirk found that the love of Christ never fails, no matter what his past may have been…and that sometimes, choosing what we want to do isn’t always a bad thing when it follows along with God’s plan. The truth woven in this story is beautiful, and probably my favorite part of the Sound of Silver.

Overall rating: {5 stars} – Someone summed up this book well, “If hope sounded like diamonds, surely truth sounded like silver.” Truth surely radiated and sparkled like silver in this golden sequel. The story tugged at my heart, whispering truth and sprinkling joy and hope. The ending was romantic and beautiful, just the way I hoped. I sincerely can’t wait to see how Rachelle is going to top this book with her last book in the series, The Sound of Emeralds!

Age recommendation: {Read aloud – 10 and up} {Self Read – 12 and up}: There is romance in the story, so please keep that in mind when reading to younger audiences. The violence isn’t present as much, but references to the bloodshed in the other book are present.

The Sound of Silver
by Rachelle Rea Cobb

After a tumultuous meeting and getting to know one another as they traveled through the Netherlands in order to escape the riots, Gwyn and Dirk are now betrothed. They travel from the Netherlands to Dirk's family's home, Godfrey Estate in England. He believes that there, Gwyn can grieve with his mother; Gwyn grieving for her parents and uncle, Lady Rohesia for her eldest son. Yet the rumors that Dirk murdered Gwyn's mother and father are bound to fly and Dirk does not want his reputation to affect Gwyn. She feels responsible because she is the one who accused him of murder months prior. Dirk leaves, thinking it will be best for everyone involved, only to find that it takes its toll on them all.

This was a really good book. It's very emotional, lots of ups and downs. Gwyn is still grieving for her parents who died only a few months prior, and now she is dealing with the fact that her uncle is dead after just finding out that he was responsible for her mother and father's deaths. That is a whole lot to deal with. And then add the fact that she and Dirk were betrothed, and he breaks it off thinking she'll be better off without him; and she has to stay with his family, who she had never met before. Poor Gwyn! I felt so sorry for her throughout this book. It would be so hard to deal with all of that while staying with virtual strangers. And I felt pretty bad for Dirk, too, because he had also been through a lot. But, they had hope in the Lord, and that is what got them through it all. And then (spoiler!) we get a happy ending- with a twist.

I have to make a comment on the setting of this series. The Netherlands and England in the mid-1500s? It's just so cool! I love picturing all the outfits and the large, grand homes, and cobble stone streets as they go through town, and the forests and fields surrounding Godfrey Estate. It's just a delight.

All in all, The Sound of Silver was a great sequel to its predecessor that made me curious as to how it will all end.

I give this book a 4 out of 5.

Usually Book 2 of a series features a new hero and heroine, but in the case of The Sound of Silver, readers find themselves still following Gwyn and Dirk. Sometimes I prefer moving on to a new story through fresh eyes, but I was thrilled to find their story was far from over. It picked up right where we left off and took my breath with it.

This was a beautiful and emotional read for me. It brought tears to my eyes and a smile to my heart with its sweet, romantic tale of faith and forgiveness.

While the first book ended with satisfying closure, I hadn’t realized then just what was ahead for these fictional friends of mine. There is still much for them to learn about themselves, about each other, and about their God. Readers will be satisfied to find more of the romantic tension, deep faith, and surprising plot twists they’ve come to expect from this author.

It’s not really a stand-alone. You really need to have read The Sound of Diamonds to fully appreciate the characters and the journey that’s brought them to the first page of The Sound of Silver. The story will mean much more to you, I promise.

The setting of this series and its time period is very vivid and fascinating. It really adds to the overall story. I can’t imagine where the story is going to go from here, but I can’t wait!

What more can I say? I was happy every time I settled in to read more of this story. I do warn you, though… the last page will undoubtedly leave you thirsting for more. ;) Happy Reading!

This review is my honest opinion. Thanks to the author for my copy.

Rachelle Rea delivers another excellent installment in her Steadfast Love trilogy. The Sound of Silver picks up right where the first novel ends, reminding readers of the first story they likely enjoyed so much. I loved this sequel. Taking place during the religious strife of the 16th century, the novel continues the sweet relationship of Gwyneth and Dirk, sprinkling in other surprises throughout.

Once again, I fell in love with Rachelle's lyrical prose. Her dialogue and word choice perfectly capture the time period in an easy-to-read manner. The historical details even inspire me to want to read more about the era. I also loved the spiritual themes. Although faith is a huge part of the characters' lives (actually one of the major premises of the trilogy), this doesn't come across as "preachy" whatsoever.

While I thoroughly enjoyed this novel, I found The Sound of Diamonds (the first novel) slightly more intriguing. I think Diamonds included more action and a greater sense of adventure, whereas this second novel focuses more on the romance and emotional connections between characters. Still, I highly recommend this novel to fans of romance, historical fiction, or novels with Christian themes. I'm looking forward to the final novel of the trilogy!

Actual Rating: 4 1/2 stars out of 5.

The Sound of Silver starts just before Diamonds ended, and from the very first page, the beauty of it all pulled me right back into their story. The cuteness is strong with this one, lol, and I was already writing my review notes in all caps before I had even finished the first chapter.

It is different than the first installment though: Silver’s not as adventurous and the beginning especially is much slower paced; but still, the characters along with their personal goals and obstacles pulled my little reader’s heart even more so than the faster pace of the first book. There was also more romantic conflict in this one, but I was able to understand the reasons behind it; plus there were other issues and other problems coming in to play, helping to keep the plot going apart from and along with the romance. Altogether, the storylines worked in tandem to bring about a lovely and inspirational tale. I was truly enchanted by it, romance and all.

This book is set in the medieval/renaissance era. I will say I didn't read the first one, and I'm really sorry I didn't before I started this. Even though I was able to quickly pick up on the story personally I feel like I missed something. I'll be heading back to pick up the first book, but if you haven't read any of this series start at the beginning!

Other than the feeling of something missing once I slipped into the author's world I was transported to another place. Rachelle Rea has an amazing attention to detail and really makes the time period shine. I loved the way the words and phrases worked with the time period, yet were easy to understand for the reader.

The characters also were well thought out and had life and depth. The romance was beautiful and the struggles they went through made the characters more realistic. You can't have a good love story without struggles along the way. Faith plays a huge part in the book, but it never comes across as being overly preachy.

There are some great twists and turns and I will also need to read the third book ( The Sound of Emeralds) to see what happens next!

The Sound of Silver ( Steadfast Love )
By: Rachelle Rea

I really enjoyed Gwyneth and Dirk’s story. Rachelle Rea knows how to draw you right in from the start and hold you till the end. Once you are in, you are hooked. I had not read The sound of Diamonds, so I had to read closely to what was happening at the start , but Rachelle Rea pens the story and characters both where they are easy to follow. Once I got started reading The Sound of Silver I did not want to put it down till the end. What does Silver mean in this story? The author pens about faith, love, honor, forgiveness, and truth. Gwyneth wants truth and faith. She lost her parents and is alone. Dirk is a man that I got a little up-set with at times. He is a wanted man and does not want to hurt Gwyneth or her name. Dirk wants honor. Can they ever be together with so much in their past? This is the second book in The Steadfast Love series and I really did enjoy it . Now I can’t wait till book three The Sound of Emeralds .
I was given a copy of this book by the author for my honest review, which I have given.

This book is incredible!! I thoroughly enjoyed The Sound of Diamonds, the first in this series, but I was unprepared for how much I would enjoy it's sequel!
Silver picks up right where we left off in Diamonds. Boy, does the story pick up speed! Rea throws us in the heat of the action fairly soon into the pages. Her pacing, the story line, and the historic elements to this novel were simply fantastic and worthy of applause. As I read, I could see the story unfolding in my mind. It was absolutely beautiful!

My favorite thing about this novel would probably be Gwyn's character development. She truly changes in a realistic manner. Rea takes her from point A in Diamonds, to now point B at the end of Silver. I'm eagerly looking forward to how she takes Gwyn to point C in Emeralds!

If you like historical novels with a little bit of action and adventure thrown in, I would highly encourage you to check out this series. You won't regret it! Rea is a shining new novelist that you won't want to miss. Trust me. ;-)

Book two in Rachelle Rea’s Steadfast Love series, Sound of Silver, is a wonderful continuation of book one, Sound of Diamonds. This 16th century novel continues the story and somewhat complicated relationship between Dirk and Gwyn. Excellently written, with entertaining characters and a fun plot line, readers will enjoy this adventurous page-turning novel, as they find out what will happen next in the story, as well as in Dirk and Gwyn’s relationship and journey together. I would recommend this novel to readers that enjoy teen historical, romance novels.

You now those books which, while you’re still in the middle of the story, you already know it’s probably a five-r—that is, those that will end up with a five-star rating, or something close—this is one of them! This installment in the Steadfast Love Series—The Sound of Silver—is so rich in almost every plot element you can think of, without it being too much.

Gwyn and Dirk both faced stark confusion and other odds that got in the way of their greatest desire. Also, loss, and fear of the danger that lurked around, caused even more pain for them. But with God’s wisdom, grace, and guidance, they were able to find themselves on the path where they belonged, with this part of the story concluding with a delightful ‘Happily Ever After!’ What I love most about the theme is that, you can never go wrong with trusting God with your life, or with someone else’s; it was portrayed beautifully!

Another flawless prose by Rachelle Rea!

Mystery, romance, full of surprises, history, abusive of trust, this author has given a truly great story continuation of The Sound of Diamonds. The characters are struggling spiritually and romantically. Gwyn has courage, honor, passion for God, and loves Dirk. Dirk is strong and admirable and in love with Gwen. The story is written from a first-person perspective from two characters' points of view. This novel is a story of grief, heartache, and finding and following God's will. Will the true killer of Gwen's parents be revealed? Who is the murderer? I was given a copy for an honest review. I highly recommend this book and author
