Watching Syria’s War Videos and images of the continuing conflict in Syria

The New York Times is tracking the human toll of the conflict in this feature. The primary source is the online video that has allowed a widening war to be documented like no other, and posts try to put the video into context. Edited by Liam Stack

A Moment of Celebration in a Devastated Neighborhood

This video shows rescuers removing a child, said to be alive, from the rubble of a collapsed building in the al-Sukkari neighborhood of Aleppo on Wednesday. Dozens of people standing atop the rubble searching for survivors celebrated the rescue. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, based in Britain, said airstrikes in al-Sukkari and in another part of Aleppo killed 13 civilians, including seven children, on Wednesday. At least four apartment buildings were destroyed by the airstrikes.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported 182 deaths in Syria on Wednesday, including the 13 from Aleppo. The government heavily relies on air power in its battle with rebels and has fired several Scud missiles at Aleppo in recent months, killing hundreds.

The rescue in this video is filmed from a distance, so we do not know what condition the child was in when rescued. We do not know the scale of destruction elsewhere in this neighborhood. We also do not know the type of weapon used by the Syrian government in this airstrike.

This video shows more footage of the site of the airstrike, with large numbers of people standing atop collapsed buildings. This 14-minute clip shows tension and chaos in the neighborhood shortly after the airstrike, as crowds gathered to survey the damage and look for survivors.
