Editor’s letter The Reinvention Of Heritage Wear

F

or me there is truly nothing quite as British as the classic Burberry trench coat. Iconic in its design, the Burberry trench has become the insignia for those with impeccable style and unquestionable taste. Envisioned 118 yeas ago and crafted in its current form in 1914 for soldiers active during WWI; this sleek, sophisticated garment is a testament to the ingenuity of British designers, and to our unparalleled creative brilliance and artistic excellence. In recent years however, classic has ‘become’ conventional, and in an industry where new and outlandish ideas often thrive, each design house must modernise and evolve. It may be said therefore, that the reinvention of heritage wear, in particular the Burberry trench, is a clear indication of both the brands commitment to its impeccable image and unwavering ability to remodel something so significant and approach this change in a fearless and fervent manner. Unifying timeless fabrics with updated materials (such as the velvet-finish, translucent rubber sleeves, collar and gun flaps) stylistic elements like the metal-detail epaulettes and slant pockets, are complimented in the most contemporary yet timeless fashion. To the writers, photographers, illustrators and editors who have made this possible with months of hard work and dedication, you are very much appreciated. The intent of British MODE is simple yet poignant. We are a celebration of established and upcoming British brands who intend to be at the forefront of the international design field. We are a declaration that as of yet, the best is still to come.

Diana & The Duchess

A Fashion Legacy Article by Sophie Milner

raceful, polished and always effortlessly elegant, Kate Middleton’s classic style has swiftly become iconic. Before the Duchess of Cambridge captivated the world with perfect princess chic, Diana posthumously continued her reign as queen in the style stakes.

Beautiful shift dresses and A-line skirts brush charmingly just above the knee. Occasionally borrowing from 40’s femininity, subtle hints of old-school glamour creep into the Duchess’ trademark looks. Yet Kate represents the modern day woman: in touch with her style, aware of what suits and what flatters, and understands the rules of practicality and duty. Discrete, straightforward, but never lustreless, Kate is empowered by her fashion choices as much as by her royal title. The Duchess always wears the clothes, never the other way round. Notoriously erring into fashion rebellion, the late Princess of Wales was renowned for her fierce Versace suits and graceful gowns. Every designer was desperate to dress Diana: her style choices were always front-page news. She loved to shock: experimentation was a game. The designer darling wore daring outfits of androgynous tuxedos with bow ties, dressing gown coats, and mismatched gloves with ball gowns. The fashion world holds Diana responsible for single-handedly returning the haute hat to the fashion front line. From boater to beret, the Duchess of Cambridge has undeniably taken cues from Diana’s love of hats and fine millinery, exhibiting the most intricate accessories and arresting headpieces at royal events, galas, and appearances. Style has always been laced with meaning and connotation. Diana used fashion as a weapon as well as words: a mechanism as well as a message. She rarely wore an outfit that stood in silence. Her sartorial and royal rebellion enchanted millions. However, as with the ever changing face of fashion, royalty has adapted 27

as clear as it is chic; simplicity, not extravagance.

The key to Kate’s impressive allure is her captivating combination of designer and high street labels. Endorsing beloved brands of thousands of young women who cannot afford designer clothes has become a powerful statement from the Duchess. From dazzling in Topshop to reigning in Reiss, Kate’s appreciation of high street fashion finds has inspired and captured hearts. You no longer have to be royalty to behold perfect princess style. Royal wardrobe 'accessibility' has become a reality, not just a fantasy. Being able to shop in the style of a royal icon has led to a fashionista frenzy notoriously known only as the ‘Kate effect’. Through fashion, young women can identify with her. Young women can connect with her. The Duchess’ style conveys new meaning, that of a fresh and modern monarchy. Kate’s message is

From their upbringings to their distinctive personal styles and even celebrity status, the comparisons between the Duchess and Diana often seem endless. Yet both royals have achieved style icon status in very different ways. Trademark and statement looks they have exhibited for the same milestone events reveal much about their personalities as both young women and their respective royal legacies. Whilst one enchanted with outspoken glamour and the other has charmed with chic elegance, their humility and compassion has always outshone their style. The charitable spirit, warmth and human touch of Diana are eternal, mirrored in Kate’s philanthropic duties and dedication. As woman so caring becomes utterly compelling: it is no surprise the Duchess has captured the hearts of not only the nation, but also the world. Whether draped in McQueen or dressed in Topshop, Kate Middleton captivates and radiates. No matter what the Duchess wears, a royal style icon is born.

Marilyn & Diana Dors Thought Behind The Face

Marilyn Monroe - Eve Arnold Photography // Angelina Jolie -Kristina Afanasyeva©

By Rebecca Martin

The appeal of Marilyn Monroe and Diana Dors is one that has spanned the decades, encompassing generations and reaching across all ages and nationalities. Take the time to elicit impressions of these two notorious women from those around you and chances are you will receive similar responses; all reminiscing of blonde bombshells, with killer curves and red pouts - the ultimate Hollywood siren. Monroe and Dors intelligently built successful careers upon their own understanding of just how powerful the female form can be; creating a façade behind which they were to hide their own personal turmoil. Dors became engrossed in the glamorous world depicted in movies from a young age, and growing older saw her delicate figure buried beneath more curvaceous proportions. As a result she made her first conscious effort to emulate those silver screen goddesses whom she so admired; lightening her brunette hair to a fairer shade of blonde - a transformation which saw Diana draw comparisons with her idol Veronica Lake. Catching the attention of the amorous American GI’s that had populated the town during her early teenage years, Diana often danced the night away caught up in a whirlwind of compliments and sweet nothings. These nights reminded her of After working as an artist’s model, taking part in the Hollywood icons she had seen on the big theatre productions and singing for the college screen, cementing her desires to join them and radio, Diana had a taste of stardom and headed see her own name in lights. to London to become the youngest full time 29

student the film academy had ever had. It was after finally getting her big break in ‘The Shop at Sly Corner’ at the age of 14 that Diana was again faced with the necessity of change if she was to progress. After concerns that her former surname Fluck might attract vulgar connotations, it was decided that she must change it to something more suitable. Reluctantly, Diana agreed to her mother’s suggestion that she use her grandmother’s maiden name of ‘Dors’; her mother believing that Diana Dors sounded a far more glamorous name for the film star her daughter was sure to become.

Hamilton taught her the positives of courting the press and objectifying herself; which Hamilton encouraged under the belief that any publicity could only be of benefit in the long run. Diana herself acknowledged and pampered to her sex symbol status, once describing herself as ‘the only sex symbol Britain has produced since Lady Godiva’. At merely twenty, she became the youngest registered keeper of a Rolls Royce in the UK; a ‘feat’ which saw her reputation as a sex symbol soar. Unbeknownst to the nation ‘her’ Rolls Royce was in fact taken out on hire purchase As the years passed, Diana’s early encounters such press activity became common in Diana’s with men marked the beginning of many years world, creating a false sense of success and in of heartache. semblance to that of Norma Jean Mortenson, better known as Marilyn Monroe. Though Diana came first, once Marilyn’s popularity soared in the States, she was nextricably linked to the beloved American seductress. From a young age Norma Jean was aware of her sexuality and its effect on those around her, as a result she did not shy away from the figure hugging garments which accentuated the contours of her prematurely developed figure. After being pictured at work by Army photographer David Conovers in his quest for ‘morale boosting’ images of women during the war, Norma Jean was signed by agency manager Emelie Snively of the Blue Book Model Agency in Hollywood. Emelie insisted that Norma become a blonde, an alteration which was to become her first step towards greatness.

The late 40’s saw Marilyn begin her physical transformation in her quest to become the perfect beauty. A slight overbite was corrected, along with a small bump of cartilage to smooth the nose and soften her face. Though by this time she had played several big roles, it was her beauty that became her selling point, something which Marilyn was fully aware of. In the iconic film ‘Gentleman Prefer Blondes’ appears a significant exchange suggested by Marilyn herself, demonstrable of her shrewdness and understanding of the role she was to play.

Like a costume for her trade, Marilyn dedicated herself first and foremost to her appearance alone. Backstage At Burberry Article by Rebecca Martin

reative Director Christopher Bailey never ceases to amaze those who gather faithfully each season for Burberry’s show. His offering for Burberry Prorsum’s AW 13 collection, cheekily entitled ‘Trench Kisses’, was no exception. As the likes of Kate Beckinsale, Frieda Pinto and Rosie Huntington Whiteley looked on from the front row, the catwalk came to life through a spectacle of animal prints, dashing gold hardware and delightful heart designs.

band belts formed a constant, nipping in the brand’s imitable trenches at the waist to give a new take on the eternal classic. A selection of items in the collection, including a distinctive leather skirt crafted from tiny tassels of gold stud appliqués and unstructured bags held nonchalantly under the arms of the models, gave an obvious nod to military attire. Gold heart shaped plates adorned dresses, whilst structured metal chest plates juxtaposed against sensuous fabrics and classically tailored designs.

White, camel, oxblood, black and gold formed the base colours of the collection, with textures proving a clear focus. Glossy cashmeres and calfskins intermingled amongst coloured latex and laminated python print leather. Combining AW13’s most popular animal prints, Bailey contrasted leopard against the more diverse zebra and giraffe; at times combining them alongside bold stripes. Gold

With a runway lineup including Jourdan Dunn, Karlie Kloss, Charlotte Wiggins and model of the moment Cara Delevingne, the energy backstage was sure to be electric. Described by Burberry ambassador Rosie Huntington Whiteley as ‘quintessentially British, young and fresh’, the brand is achingly cool and the mood backstage echoed this. 35

Having arrived as a bundle of excitement and personality, Cara blew kisses to the waiting crowds. Wearing a cool but casual outfit of jeans, hooded jacket, silver sneakers and sky blue beanie hat, Cara’s hair hung loosely around her shoulders as she radiated pure energy, pulling the faces that have become her trademark but as her mother may have warned, may well stick one day if the wind changes, and one must ask, what would be of her stratospheric modeling career then? The energy continued backstage, with the stunning Karlie Kloss rocking her new short locks with aplomb. Clearly bursting at the seams with anticipation at making her first appearance for the brand, Karlie remarked on her own impressions of what has become a very British institution. “It’s so timeless and classic, and quintessentially London and English. I’ve always dreamt of having one of these trenches, I might 36

just take this one and run out” she laughed mischievously. Better keep an eye on that rail Mr Bailey, there is lady with a longing for a classic in your midst! Bedecked in her much longed for Burberry trench, even if only for a little while, Karlie was accosted by the beautiful Jourdan Dunn, who was keen to teach her the ‘real Harlem Shake’. Banishing the preconception of backstage being merely a place of manic beautifying and little else, Dunn used the opportunity to release pre show tensions. Once the show had come to an end, closed by an epic performance by Brit Award Winner Tom Odell of his new song ‘Hold On’, Delevingne took the time for an adrenaline fueled Q&A session. As one interviewer remarked that this was Cara’s moment, she animatedly suggested ‘you’re more excited than I am’ before exploding into mock surprise, exclaiming a

very convincing “Wooo!” as she flung her blonde locks around her in celebration. After praising the talents of the brand and their ability to come back with something that is always fresh and cool, Cara jokingly questioned whether she was coping with the demands of being arguably one of the world’s most sought after models.

modeling export for decades.

Burberry saw a backstage buzzing with the sort of cool Britannia we have come to associate it with. Far from a subdued atmosphere, the electrically charged show left both the model’s and their audience filled with adrenaline. We enjoyed a plethora of the industry’s best coming together to deliver an event (and “Everyone’s like ‘how can you cope’ and I’m backstage) absolutely suffused with energy. like, I don’t know if I am coping? I think I am I?” she jested into the camera, a comedic look of exaggerated bewilderment still failing to detract from her ridiculous beauty. When asked how Cara the model differs from Cara the person, she quickly summed it up.“I don’t like Cara the model. I’m just Cara and for some reason these people like to hire me as a model. Ha! Don’t know why!?” she exclaimed again into the camera, brimming with the exhilarating energy that has helped cement her as Britain’s most famous Images courtesy of Burberry

Rossi’s Stiletto Renaissance Article by Moira Valenti

S

hoes are to die for, and Gianvito Rossi's are to be re-born for. Before you decide that such an emphatic statement is pure hyperbole, take a long, lingering, lusting look at his autumn/winter collection and reach your own conclusion; I dare you! Rossi's design aesthetic is securely modern, feminine and unmistakably chic. His ethos is simple, shoes should make a woman smile and compliment her look. This collection features dazzlingly stream-lined pumps-cum-stilettos (better known here as Court shoes), sneakers and stylish architectural carbon wonders. There are high heel platform shoes but no kitten, puppy, spool, cone, prism, hour glass or wedge heels; the pump, stiletto and sneaker 44

holds sway. Son of Sergio Rossi, Gianvito went on to launch his own line of shoes in 2006, later teaming up with Gucci and more recently collaborating with the darling of New York fashion, Joseph Altuzarra. Through his assured craftsmanship the heel 'soars;' the leg lengthening, calf slimming, hip swinging stiletto is alive and tripping down a catwalk near you. Adoring as he does lean sweeping lines which glove the foot and render up toe-curling sensuality; Gianvito triumphs with pumps which are so much more than the wardrobe essential they'd evolved to be. The Woman Collection showcases attention grabbing strong geometric 'nets' with heel-hugging zipped backs, cat-woman style thigh-high har-

lequin pattern boots and amongst others, ultra elegant black and white ankle strap pumps. Rossi specialises in design details which add interest and style rather than dominate and 'shout;' these include sexy straps and buckles, neat loafer-style tassels, peep-toes, soft suede, silver lame, sleek steel-toed boots, snake skin and neutral camouflage pumps. We glimpse craftsmanship and flare that elevates women's shoes to fairy dust.

E

nter Gianvito's carbon range and the stage is set for seemingly effortless elegance of line; a freedom of sinuousness resulting from a technical tour de force. Heels are sexy without excess embellishment. The strength and stability of design that carbon offers has enabled Rossi to walk his line across a whole new design terrain. The simplicity is

breath-taking in its design complexity. Shoes are light, strong and technically assured; details are gorgeous, exemplified by sleek straps and boasting slender heels of gleaming steel. Rossi invites the wearer to take the stage, slipping her foot into pieces which are pure theatre: Thrilling black spider-web creations cosset the heel whilst at the same time embracing the 'upper' medial longitudinal arch; pink fur trimmed pumps suggest slipping into something more comfortable - negligĂŠe moments. Gianvito uses the latest technology, namely carbon fibre, in this ultra elegant, sophisticated and gorgeously imaginative women's collection. He assuredly translates design brilliance into sheer 'walk-in,' must-have extravagance for the woman who must have shoes which express both ideals and beauty in one breath-taking glance. 45

The Return of

Classic Glamour

Image Consultant & Monthly Columnist Kelly Millar On Making The Most Of Your Femininity es on gorgeous ultra waif-like models on shop billboards, posters and in glossy magazines. Of course it’s exciting and may inspire you to write out a wish list for the 'must-haves' to add to your wardrobe, but it can also be daunting knowing where to start, and how to best invest in the current trends. A good idea is to look with fresh eyes at the start of each season at your existing wardrobe. Although we tend to get tired of wearing (or just seeing in many cases) the same classic pieces, don’t be too quick to eliminate them altogether. Classic pieces are the building blocks of our wardrobe and should be the key investment pieces with which to incorporate the trends, and ultimately our own unique personal style.

Autumn is here again and although elegance is constantly being redefined by seasonal trends, the good news is that you can create a classic, sophisticated silhouette giving you an ultra-feminine, contoured physique.

The classic fashion eras of the 1940’s and 50’s had some things 'very right,' especially showcasing beautiful women’s shapes and femininity. Whilst the original styles would seem too prim for today’s modern woman the key is to take the classic shapes of the period styles and personalise them by way of accessories or unique combinations; it’s about reinventing the styles to suit a modern attitude, which represents who we are as women today - empowered and confident.

As a personal style expert, I spend most of my days giving fashion and personal branding advice and often find many women asking, “How do I make the current trends work for me?” For most of us, each season we see fabulous piec-

there really is something to accentuate every figure. It’s all about embracing our femininity and finding a few key trends that flatter us. The wonderful thing about investing in classic pieces is that they do stand the test of time! So no need to feel guilty about the pleasure of investing in you this autumn. Embrace textured fabrics such as tweed and lace, brocade, silk, velvet and satin, and of course circle skirts complimented by belts in a range of sizes. This is a key season and moment to invest in your classic pieces and add some glamour to your wardrobe. It’s like when you leave a shop thinking, “I should have just bought it, it’s perfect”. When it comes to fashion, that little inner voice that we often ignore usually serves us well.

dress it up or down, but it’s sure to be a hit addition to your wardrobe this autumn. To my delight, it seems the best of the “classics” has returned this season and it’s a perfect time to rethink our wardrobes and make the most of our femininity. After all, it’s always the classics that will save us on any occasion and ensure that we look fabulous. Some of my absolute favourite pieces for AW13 will make a statement and flatter all body shapes, whether you are curvy or straight. They’re stunning for day wear at the office, running about in the city or for a glamorous evening; go ahead, style yourself with sophistication from the AW palette.

Fortunately, many of the styles this season focus on classic cuts and highlighting women’s curves. Don’t despair if you’re not particularly curvy as many of the key styles, such as the pencil skirt, are flattering for every shape and will add a touch of femininity to any outfit, regardless of how you combine it. Stylish Garments for the Sophisticated

Modern Man

The age of technology is upon us, granting us the world at our finger tips. For the modern man who is confident yet composed, sharp with an air of sophistication, and charismatic without being arrogant; fashion and iconic inspiration is now available at the mere click of a button. Here is a man who is not defined by age but rather clever choices. Every micro-fibre within a garment must ooze with sophistication to truly do justice to this classic, contemporary breed.

Johnston of Elgin, Jshoes and Deakin and Francis show us how truly Great Britain really is when it comes to providing quality, substance, colour and style. the softest Scottish waters and surrounded by the most glorious landscapes the country has to offer. Johnston’s of Elgin searches the world over for the finest most luxurious fabrics and by doing this they provide the most superior quality of cashmere and fine wools one could imagine. With only the best designers on board working with materials of the highest calibre, why would anyone look any further, especially when it comes from just across the border. Every process that goes in to preparing the raw material takes place in house from spinning to cutting – a sign of their commitment to the end product. Perhaps it is because they oversee the entirety of the process, that they have an unparalleled level of quality control. With a unique blend of colour and rich history, it is clear to see what makes them so popular within elite circles and so favoured by Savile Row and Royals alike. Heritage has been their recent inspiration for the new A/W 13 collection. With boozy berries bursting through autumnal hues, incorporated within gauge knits and herringbone patterns. Portraying their rich company legacy and offering an eclectic twist on patterns and textures. Becoming the epitome of sophistication can only be achieved by the perfect footwear, which means always being on the hunt for contemporary twists on the classics. Jshoes offers an array of innovative designs that have a combination of individuality, craftsmanship and high quality materials. This presents the perfect blend of artistic craft, with comfort and style. In keeping with the undercurrent of Great Britain, this company has its roots embedded in Leicestershire. Jshoes present you with a truly unique pair to accompany your mod52

ern wardrobe. All of the leathers used in the shoes are untreated to avoid eliminating natural blemishes. Instead they offer warmth and depth through aniline finishes, waxes and oils. It is a refreshing statement from the company that makes them stand out from an ever present mass produced market, they give you a chance to own a pair of shoes that are truly unique. A favourite of mine has to be the Charlie dark brown leather brogues with sapphire blue laces. The tapered toes, leather stack heel and sole give this shoe a classic look and combined with the blue laces transforms them in to a rather edgy, contemporary must have. Those who understand the importance of adding a personal touch their outfits should look no further than Deakin and Francis. They have the most spectacular display of cufflinks to suit all manner of personalities. If you consider yourself a silver fox then frost your wrists with a pair of Deakin and Francis handmade fox cufflinks, ‘ideal for a day’s hunting.’ Classic style is a luxury ‘to don’ and can be made exquisite by combining the luxuriously tailored fabrics from Johnston of Elgin with the innovative designs from Jshoes, and of course topping off with a unique pair of cufflinks from Deakin and Francis. Hardy Amies

Article by Rebecca Martin

Housed in the infamous No. 14 Savile Row, a location as steeped in history as the brand itself, Hardy Amies continues to define the epitome of London style. Renowned as the couturier of choice to Queen Elizabeth II for over 40 years, Sir Hardy Amies has left a lasting legacy and one which Creative Director Claire Malcolm continues in his honour today. Recognising that the true value of the brand lay in its heritage, the most recent collections have retained the gentlemanly essence of English sensibilities, whilst moving towards targeting the younger generations with a new ‘cool Britannia’ image. Iconic 1980’s British band The Jam provide the backing soundtrack to the current Hardy Amies advertising campaign, with ‘This is the Modern World’ accompanying an artistically shot black and white video set against the clean, white homepage. With 60

1960’s London and a nod to the mod-revival movement clearly a resounding inspiration, the video delivers a strong message of the brands intentions to create an innovative take on heritage wear. Demonstrating an inspirational combination of traditional tailoring with modern day touches, the FW13 collection, presented in the Grand Salon of the house as is tradition, delivered a mix of gentleman and dandy - with a definite young, modern aesthetic. Scottish thistles adorned the lapels of suit jackets, whilst overcoats provided an early indication of Claire Malcolm’s inspiration; Hardy’s royal connotations and his presence within the realms of high society, with summers spent vacationing with British royalty at their Balmoral retreat.

check, with leather accents and shortened lapels lending a more contemporary edge than that showcased in the FW11 collection. Textures remained a focus for the designer, though there was a clear departure away from the strong fur elements showcased within the FW12 collection. Wool continued to provide a contrast against the sharp tailoring, as it had done in seasons before; although in this instance it was presented as thick navy cable knits, capes and overcoats in Bauhaus inspired linear prints that echoed the tartans around them. In refusal of an idea that appealing to a younger generation might see the compromise of luxury, expensive touches remained abundant; collars remained high, with ties sitting proudly, casual layering was provided by exquisite quality merino wool polo-necks, and accessories were complemented by the most buttery soft of leathers.

Described by Sir Hardy Amies as ‘the uniform of the gentleman…worn at all times when respect for tradition and hope for an ordered future prevail’, the man’s suit remains the explicit focus for the collection, revealing an unwavering dedication to the preservation of this master craft. In distinct contrast to their FW12 collection (consisting of a purely grey colour palette), the FW13 presentation signalled a return to the Prince of Wales check, featured strongly throughout earlier seasons. Double-breasted suits, smart ponchos and edgy rucksacks all showcased the Prince of Wales

In his influential book ‘The ABC of Men’s Fashion’, published in 1964, Hardy expressed a strong opinion of turn-ups on men’s trousers, firmly stating that ‘you can’t have any’. With this in mind, the decision to send models down the catwalk with trousers tucked into thick woollen hiking socks and shiny black bovver boots is all the more notable, a declaration by the brand of adaptability. Sir Hardy Amies once famously stated that “a man should look as if he has bought his clothes with intelligence, put them on with care, and then forgotten all about them”, and the FW13 collection encompasses this sartorially aware yet nonchalant attitude to men’s fashion. The ability of the Hardy Amies brand to remain current and on-trend, in the ever-changing face of London style and against an ever-increasing demand for fast fashion, serves as true testament to the legendary British fashion house. 61

Fashion Editor Moira Valenti, Speaks Exclusively With The World’s Oldest Diamond Company On ‘Only Watch’ Auction For Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy We are certain our readers will delight in the exquisite beauty and decidedly feminine appeal of the Backes and Strauss Victoria Princess Red Heart watch. Designed specifically for this auction it represents a highly laudable charitable endeavour whilst attesting to the technical brilliance and artistry of their horologists. Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy is a progressive, muscle wasting, genetic disease carried on the X chromosome, affecting boys. Established in 66

London in 1789, Backes and Strauss is the oldest diamond company in the world and since 2006 watchmakers uniquely inspired by British tradition; most honourably commissioned by the Crown to create the official watch for the 60 year reign of Queen Elizabeth II.

Ms Valenti: Can you tell our readers a little

about the companies philanthropic antecedents? Which other worthy causes would you like to

back in the future and why?

B&S: In 2012, we created the Victoria Blue

Heart, a piece crafted in white gold with white diamonds and blue sapphires to directly benefit the United Nation’s Blue Heart Campaign. A percentage of the proceeds of each watch sold will go towards the trust fund for victims of human trafficking and will help the UN’s everlasting battle to create a better tomorrow. In terms of new initiatives, there are no shortages of worthwhile causes and we are weighing up a number of options currently.

ros in 2011, how much would you hope it could raise this year?

B&S: Hopefully a lot more! As the event

evolves, so too does the public awareness. There are some beautiful pieces on auction so expectations are that the event will comfortably surpass last year’s figure.

Ms. Valenti: The piece is so distinctly femi-

egance and femininity, and as you say this piece is no exception. Whilst it is unique it retains the same grace and beauty of the other watches in the collection.

B&S: At Backes & Strauss we don’t like to constrain the creativity of the designers by dictating the number of diamonds used. The piece was a modern twist on a heritage theme and whatever the designer needed was at her disposal.

Ms. Valenti: Finally, what do you believe a watch says about an individual, above and beyond other adornments such as statement jewellery?

Breathtakingly Beautiful Brumani

From the moment our eyes fell upon the stunning creations of the exceptionally visionary Bruner brothers, we longed to possess the captivating creations they’ve crafted.Their designs draw inspiration from both long established European traditions and the naturalistic lines and curves of the fiery, sensually aware Brazilian aesthetic. Each piece in the collection is both a contemporary and compellingly classic representation of a woman’s femininity. Whether selecting a pair of chandelier earrings to compliment an elegant neckline, a dazzling bracelet to adorn a slender wrist, or a diamond and sapphire ring;

70

each piece conveys its own story. Brumani jewels should not be reserved simply for a ‘special’ occasion, particularly when they are as memorable and as exquisite as the Looping Shine collection. Perhaps you may wish to follow in Carolina Herrera’s footsteps by teaming a pair of sparkling, translucent, diamond rose gold earrings with the upturned collar of a crisp white shirt. Add to this some dark washed denims, a pair of fabulous heels and you are ready for afternoon tea or coffee with friends after a relaxng morning at the spa. CADENZ A

The Wearable Masterpiece

By Noora Uusitalo

Cadenzza is the latest offering from jewellery industry leader, Swarovski. With its first UK store in Westfield Stratford London, Cadenzza offers a multi-brand experience; wherein the latest pieces from established designers such as Jean Paul Gaultier, rest alongside those of emerging designers. Cadenzza hopes to capitalise on London’s love of jewellery stating “we believe fashion jewellery isn’t just for special occasions; it’s for making every occasion special.” This ideology lies at the heart of the brand and is a driving force for their innovative, cutting edge in-store environment. In store, designers are categorised by trends as opposed to brand names; allowing customers to purchase jewellery reflective of their own style, therefore personalising the buying experience. This is further reinforced by Cadenzza’s slogan ‘Today I am,’ which appears throughout different lines in a slightly altered form.

Their current AW13/14 collections are a marvel. Anton Heunis Gotham City inspired collection consists of designs with black crystals and gold. It is wonderfully conceptualised and has a vintage, art-deco aesthetic. Another collection by Heunis, named Tsarina, combines golden hues with deep blue crystal to offer a dash of royal Russian romance – evoked by the rich architecture of St. Petersburg. Leticia Ponti’s creative inspiration stems from the cultures in which she has become immersed, namely: Paraguay, Brazil, Chile, Guinea and France. Her golden headbands are delightful examples of the bohemian element which diversifies her sophisticated AW13 accessories collection. Cadenzza’s license to thrill gives the Swarovski catalogue a whole new dynamism; offering themed jewellery from Gaultier and other top designers, aimed at tapping into the wearers mood or passion. This is just about as on-trend as jewellery can get. So whether you fancy yourself a Tzarina for the night or want to feel the pulse of Gotham City, Cadenzza is the place where imagination and creation converge. 75

If there was a public figure you could design for or who you feel may be a great ambassador for your brand, who would that be and why? Emma Watson has a wonderful elegance, a pixie like style which I love, Karen Gillan has a delightfully quirky & slightly vintage style (which I wear myself) so it would be amazing to have some of my jewellery worn by them, or to even design something just for either of the lovely ladies. On another note it would also be perfect to have some of my jewels worn by Dr Alice Roberts or Dr Lucy Worsley, both of them are inspiring fascinating women who I admire - and love their TV shows, some of the only ones I get around to watching as I normally have my head in a book or creating jewels in the workshop. Finally, what colour palette and overall theme will we be seeing throughout your next collection? I will keep exploring some treasured tales, stories with mystery, enchantment and detail. Endless ideas bubble around in my head so I will be happily creating forever. Switching between the darker tales and the lighter stories, there is so much inspiration out there. I live close to one of the UK’s biggest second hand bookshops which is an endless inspiration, having just picked up beautifully stunning copies of the Rubiyat, Paradise Lost and some Indian Fairytales, so who knows what will come. I am also beginning to incorporate more gemstone into my designs, favouring iridescent and unusual stones like opal, labordite, moonstone, ametrine or stones with inclusions and imperfections like rutalites or of course emeralds which are my favourite. For those with naturally curly hair, begin by prepping damp hair with L’Oreal Professionel tecni.art Pli and a generous amount of L’Oreal Professionel tecni. art Liss Control and blow-dry straight, then take a wide-barrel tong and add a bend to the mid-lengths of the hair. This style is most suited to all face shapes, especially round, as it is slimming. Make it a little more daring by adding a beach texture with L’Oreal Professionel Beach Fizz, and add an edgy diagonal parting.’

‘Divide the hair in 2 and add Kerastase Elixir Ultime throughout. Do a scalp fishtail plait to each side, by taking two pieces of hair and feeding a small part of the left-hand section over the right hand section. Repeat this on both sides of the headand secure each plait at the ends, wrap over one another and pin in place. This style is most suited to oval or heart face shapes. Pull some pieces out at the front to make it more wearable for other face shapes. Make it a little more daring by using a gel to create a sleek and stylish wetlook finish, and massage the braids for a really lived-in look.’

‘To get this look you need to backcomb the fringe area and the crown to create plenty of texture. The hair is then scraped back and a comb is pulled through from the hairline to give more definition. There is no shortage of product on this look and the stray hairs at the nape have been precisely sprayed in place. This look is quite daring and won’t help soften features but works really well with heart shaped faces who have petite features.’

Diane Von Fürstenberg ‘This is a classic, glamorous blowdry, achieved using a barrel brush and large tongs to get the roundness through the ends. A smoothing cream is a must for this look with shine spray to finish. I love this rich, chocolate brown. To make it a little more daring you could have some multi-tonal slices placed through the perimeter of the hair which is a fresh take on the dip-dye look that has been popular for many seasons.’

Marchesa ‘Using a tail comb, section the hair from the crown behind each ear combing them forward. Secure the remaining into a tight ponytail at the nape of neck, apply gel and split into large sections criss-crossing them over each other and tucking under to create a wrapped bun. Take hair from each side of the front section, apply gel and criss cross over the back of your head then tuck the ends under the wrapped bun. With the remaining frontal hair create a deep side part and secure hair behind the ears, under the bun. Use shine spray to create a sheen and adorn with a few straight silver hair slides.’

- Mark Leeson

Jason Wu ‘This is perfect for the red carpet and bridal. It suits all face shapes and if you have a long face its best to wear a fringe, round faces wear all the hair swept back off your face, square and heart shapes be sure to let hair fall around the face to soften the look. Brush hair back into and secure into ponytail using a hairband low at base of your neck. Spray the ponytail with a heat protection spray. Take about 2-3 inch sections of hair and proceed to curl them using your tong. Once you have tonged your ponytail, pick up sections of your hair and roll the hair around your fingers to create a curl to then pin at the base of ponytail. Keep doing this until you have pin curled all of the hair and secured at the nape of neck creating a messy bun.’

The majority of us are still attempting to finesse our daily or weekly brow routine, yet over the decades the brow shape and style trends have changed dramatically. 4 Steps To Full Brows

By Caroline Topperman

You will need: Tweezers Brow Pencil/Powder Spoolie Brush Brow Gel/Hairspray Renewing Serum

Full brows are not only exotically beautiful, they are a mark of sophistication. Brows draw attention to your eyes & are the single feature which frames the face. Although not everyone is lucky enough to have a naturally fuller brow, with the right products and a few of our tips, you can achieve today’s most sought after look. 91

Selecting The Shape

Begin by taking your tweezers and holding them in line with your nose to get an idea of where your brow should begin.

Next, angle the tweezers so that they are in line with the outside of your iris, generally this is the highest point of your arch.

Now that you have an idea of where your brows begin and end, use a spoolie brush to comb them upward. This creates the illusion of a fuller look and makes it easier to spot the sparser areas which need to be filled. If you’d like you can trim any hairs that stray above your brow line - do be careful when doing this! Your

natural brow shape is always the most flattering!

92

Lastly angle the tweezers toward the outer corner of your eye, this is where the brow should end - extend them if you wish.

Quick Tips * Don’t use a magnifying mirror, nor stand too close to the mirrorwhilst plucking. * Outline the brows with a white khol liner and stay within the lines.

True Beauty

Editor Caroline Topperman speaks with Blanche Macdonald make up artists Paula Lanzador & Trina Duhra In this monthly series we will be taking a look at true beauty and examining its meaning. Our team at British MODE has been searching for fascinating individuals in the world of skincare and cosmetics, to find out what true beauty means to them.

Our Guide To Bridal Makeup By Cathryn Kerwin / Professional MUA

106

Preparing for your wedding is as important as the ceremony itself, which is why we recommend booking a professional makeup artist well in advance. There are however, many aspects to consider when booking an MUA:

* Always book a consultation with a few Makeup Artists that you like at least 6 – 8 weeks before the big day, as great Makeup Artists are often booked in advance. * Recommendations from friends are fantastic but always check out their portfolio. You need an MUA who knows the importance of photographic makeup and has experience with bridal make up and professional shoots. * Each MUA has their own style and it important that this is suited to what you desire. Try and book an Artist with several different looks in their portfolio. * Check out their qualifications and make sure that they have relevant insurance in place. * An experienced Makeup Artist will know exactly what time she should start and when she should be finished in time for you to dress. Normally its hair first and then makeup. * In some cases a Makeup Artist will also be a professionally qualified Stylist which is favourable and ultimately easier; as you only have to convey your expectations to that one individual who can then consider how the hair and makeup will compliment each other completely. * It is highly important to know what products they like to use. You do not want to select an MUA who doesn’t use high end products, as professional products are superior in quality and longevity. You will be need to look perfect all day and the pigments in these type of products are significantly stronger. * As a bride it is completely normal and somewhat expected of you to shed a tear, which is why waterproof products are so utterly crucial for bridal makeup. Even the most highly qualified and professional MUA can overlook things sometimes, so don’t be afraid to remind them and inqure about what they’re using. * Try, try and try again. There is nothing wrong with doing a full face trial run so that you can be sure that you skin agrees with the products and that you can either ‘ok’ or change the look well in advance.

Our voice of the wedding world reveals all the latest goings-on from the aisle of I do! 108

D B Photography Sussex / Sarah Louise Johnson

I am so thrilled to be launching my new column here at British MODE and cannot wait to rip open my little black book of big day gorgeousness to share with you all. Dedicated to what must surely be the most sensational day of any girl’s life, everything and anything will be covered, from solving those pesky wedding day dilemmas, to talking bridal trends before they even happen! From this moment on, I George Watts, your Official Wedding Fairy, do solemnly swear that you shall go to the ball and shine beyond Cinderella’s wildest dreams – and I am not just talking about the bride! Yes ladies, it’s time to sprinkle a little love across the Nation – Wedding Fairy style...

This month’s fabulous find! Kitty and Dulcie! Quite clearly I could not kick off this first edition without talking about the dress – that would just be ridiculous! A wedding day is made up of many fabulous elements but, let’s face reality – the dress is most definitely at the top of the pile! For many brides-to-be this is where the pressure really kicks in – unearthing the one! And I am not talking about your man! The hunt for a dream dress can often be a stressful affair and knowing where to start can be just as bad, but fear not girls – I am here to do all the legwork for you. Actions speak louder than words with your wedding fairy. So on that note, let me cue kittyanddulcie.com. I totally adore this super slick collection of sexy bridal numbers that all come in under an unbelievable £500! And yes you did just hear me correctly because I could not believe the price tags either when I discovered this little nugget of loveliness. From the Countess Carmel to the City Slicker, put simply, these are bridal gowns that both you and your purse will love - their words not mine, but I have to say, I do tend to agree with them! Enjoy the sparkle ladies.

Wedding Fairy whispers! What’s hot & what’s not for 2014 weddings George Says: Keeping it simple is the way forward for 2014, thanks in part to the minimalist styling of Keira Knightley’s nuptials to James Righton earlier this year. That wedding sent shock waves across the industry and designers into meltdown! Big, brash and beautiful is dead, long live less is more... and that includes the cake! I am afraid the trend for vintage styled weddings - that has been going so strong over the last few years, has also peaked and is now reaching its sale by date. Time to pack away all those jam jars you have been hoarding for month’s folks – that distressed rustic look is now so last season! 109

Flower power! Ever since that deliciously divine avenue of maple trees graced the aisle of Westminster Cathedral for the Royal Wedding of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, I have been inundated with requests on how best to recreate such an incredible wedding day scene. It turns out we all want to be at one with nature right now - from the root to the wedding as I like to say! And the good news – of which I always like to be armed with, is that now we can give thanks for all the lovely flower farms popping up across the UK. I just adore this wonderful concept sweeping the UK that provides a varied and sustainable alternative to mass produced flower imports. And more importantly it’s a super romantic gesture too! What a way to spend a sunny Sunday afternoon, waltzing through a field of fabulous foliage with your 110

other half, selecting all the beautiful buds for your big day celebrations. Yes, these floral havens are perfect for personally mixing the colour palette for your wedding – especially as most farms have an on-site design team who can turn your dreamy ideas into reality. Get inspired for your bouquets, buttonholes and beyond by visiting www.cutflowergarden. co.uk.

Reader SOS Help George! I am getting married in a few months and worried about being freezing cold in my dress – any suggestions? Wedding Fairy Wisdom! Let them eat cake!

The A-list Idea! Make mine a mojito! But make sure you bling it up first! Yes, it’s time to ditch the old favourites as this latest celebrity craze sweeps A-list events everywhere! Even Queen Madge managed to pimp up the Margaritas at her recent Marie Antoinette themed birthday bash in the South of France. Superstars the planet over are hunting out the very best mixologists to wow with the very best blend they can muster. So, if the celebs are all getting in on the action, why not have a go at creating your very own little love potion for all your wedding guests to enjoy! A suitably sexy name to go with said cocktail is of course essential. For some great recipes you can experiment with and tips from the best mixologists in the business visit www.thecocktaillovers.com – a classic Sex in the City Cosmopolitan with your own personalised twist sounds very tempting... I am breaking into a cocktail thirst just thinking about it!

Take a whole new approach to the cake cutting tradition with what I simply describe as The Big Day Bake off! Why opt for only 1 cake when you could have 40?! Now that is the kind of wedding breakfast show-stopping centrepiece I am talking about! What is the idea I hear you ask? Well, when inviting ones guests to attend the biggest day of your life, why not also invite them to construct a sculpture of the sweet treat variety to bring along for your Big Day Bake Off. Essentially this is a competition to find the best designed, best tasting cake at the wedding, judged of course by our fresh from the aisle, utterly gorgeous bride and groom. Oh and if you are super brave, you could also get the Mother-in-Law’s involved too although, this option clearly has the potential to get very messy – quite literally! Daggers or rather top-tiers at dawn girls - I am joking of course... trust me, this is such a fun way to cut said cake and keep your guests entertained and chatting about who should have won for hours! Host a competition for adults, teenagers and children so everyone can get involved and offer a prize for the winner of each category. Not only is this a brilliant twist on this most classic of wedding traditions but, the Big Day Bake Off is also great for the big day budget too!

The Porcelain Dress The Porcelain taffeta dress is made with 11m of silk with a 2m x 2m Statement train. The dress still dons the signature corset base, acting as a mount on which to drape the asymmetric detail. This is a design development of the Scarlett dress - still embracing the full sweeping square train. Pleats gathering around the side waist and side panniers give this gown a contemporary yet classic appearance from the times of Mary Antoinette. The train can be hitched up to produce another glorious silhouette and an even more generously fuller skirt of luxurious silk taffeta.

Long Alice Dress The Long Alice Dress was constructed with a corset based top in tulle overlay and changant opal (flesh and pistachio) shot taffeta. The long Tulle skirt is based on a waspie, which even brides with the most petite waist such as Dita Von Tees loves to embrace. Tulle over the taffeta creates an effect much like a degrade effect (light to dark) that has made a huge impression on the catwalks recently.

5 Flattering Gowns for the Timeless Bride By Moira Valenti

Here at British MODE we consider it an irrefutable fact that the bridal gown will remain the most important and memorable piece of dress wear any woman will ever select. Proms, parties, events and landmark celebrations will never hold the sentimental significance of the dress which re-defines a woman’s status. A status transformed so singularly through the stylistic convention which is little short of mythical reinvention; princess for a day. Looking at Sincerity Bridal’s latest collection we can actively imagine this ‘wish made flesh’ as exemplified through our selection of five glorious gowns from Sincerity Bridal.

118

Chantilly Lace Gown (Style 3760)

This classically elegant A-line or Princess Dress is crafted from ultra feminine Chantilly lace accented with floating Alencon lace appliquĂŠs. The gown features a sweetheart neckline with an organza asymmetrical draped skirt which creates that signature A-line silhouette. This perfect marriage of fitted bodice and ‘flared’ skirt creates a slimmer waistline whilst flattering the bust; a classic wedding outline which compliments almost any figure. To complete the look the dress is finished with a chapel length train and rear zip detail covered by organza buttons.

119

Fit & Flare Beaded Lace & Tulle Gown (Style 3759)

Sincerity have created a beautiful lace and tulle gown complete with chapel length train and delicately detailed flattering three-quarter length lace sleeves. The V-neck bodice is decorated with lace appliqué and satin buttons, an excellent choice for the pear-shape; this style draws the eye to the upper body, concealing square shoulders and charmingly covering upper arms. For the bride who wishes to echo the grace and finesse of The Duchess’ of Cambridge’s wedding gown then this bodice and these sleeves insinuate regal style.

120

Strappy V-Neck Chiffon Gown (Style 3751)

For the bride endowed with a fuller cleavage, the sloping straps, deep V-neckline and V-shaped rear shoulder detail provides a gown of perfect poise. This dress has some fine touches: The chiffon buttons beneath the ‘V’ of the back, delineating pleated chiffon cummerbund enfolding and flattering the waistline all completed by a sweep length circling train. This is the perfect style for accentuating cleavage and showing off that special piece of jewellery.

121

Beaded Lace and Tulle Strapless Gown (Style 3755)

There are hints of Monaco and Marilyn Monroe about this fabulously feminine mermaid style gown, exemplified as it is by its incomparable hour glass silhouette. The strapless beaded lace and tulle creation which flares from the knee unmistakably speaks glamour through its cinched regal satin pleated cummerbund, satin covered zip concealing buttons and detachable ‘pop-in’ Sabrina neckline with halter collar. The bride who wears this creates a ‘wow’ silhouette and a gorgeous swish with every step towards “I do!” This style is perfectly suited to flatter the curvy woman, balancing as it does both hip and bust lines.

122

Ball Gown (Style 3752)

Our final piece in this selection comprises the full tulle ball gown with traditional chapel length train. The gown hints at sexiness with its tulle pleated basque waistline whilst the eye delights in the luxuriantly beaded bust line which finds its flourish over the skirt. The corset style mid-back has the perfect criss-cross lace-up detailing which narrows to a sharp V over the lower back; the eye is led down the bustle suggesting a delightful contour. The strapless neckline compliments elegant necks, great shoulders and toned arms and perfectly flatters a medium bust and creates a wonderful frame for jewellery. A ‘Cinderella’ gown for the woman who has found her very own Prince Charming. 123

Hiding the bride from her future husband is a common purpose of the veil. In Italian tradition this sense of mystery deepens into the paranormal, as the delicate white fabric is believed to protect the Bride by warding off evil spirits. The choices at Leo Eventi are kaleidoscopic: there are so many spectrums to choose from. This includes ceremonies. “The most popular choice in terms of ceremonies by couples coming from abroad is either the civil ceremony in those venues that allow a legal civil outdoor ceremony or a symbolic ceremony which can be arranged anywhere”, Leo Eventi says. Traditionally, Civil ceremonies in Italy are read in Italian, though it is not necessary to speak the language. Rooted in rich Catholic history, Italy is studded with decadent Catholic churches dating back centuries. Bedecked with ornate designs, gilded, sacred statues and art, and opulent religious décor, these churches offer a holy alternative to regal houses and palatial villas. Leo Eventi told MODE “The religious ceremony is less requested in general, however it is still a popular choice for Irish couples”, and they will provide a list of churches that offer a classic religious ceremony to couples travelling from oversees. Highclere Castle Surrounded by one thousand acres of rolling green hills and built by Sir Charles Barry, Highclere Castle is one of England’s most beautiful occupied Victorian mansions and venue of choice for hit TV drama Downton Abbey. For over 300 years, the castle served as the seat of the Earls of Carnarvon with a richly documented past dating back to the English Civil War. We see it as the dream venue for a bride who wants to be enchanted by a magnificent story. 146

The mansion boasts truly resplendent architectural details. We are in awe of the white clustered columns and the stone vaulted ceilings in the Saloon. As the primary gathering space this is the heart of the Castle. It has the grandiose feeling of a stately Gothic room yet it is warmed by hand tooled leather wall hangings, family portraits and ornate furniture giving it the welcoming touch of a cosy home. With an imposing Victorian Library and the Music

Room which together can accommodate up to 170 guests, we feel it offers the bride a wide range of choices for the perfect ceremony. For the bride who has a larger group of up to 400 guests, a marquee attached to the Castle, with breathtaking views across the Parkland, provides the perfect extension. Picture yourself riding in a luxurious vintage car through the park gates and lush rolling landscapes, arriving at the instantly recognizable Highclere Castle. You and your bridesmaids retire to an opulent bedroom to prepare for the ceremony. Pachelbel’s Canon in D is playing as you approach the Great Oak Staircase with guests seated down below. Enrobed in a Swarovski embellished lace gown, you

glide down the red carpet, surrounded by woven wall panes and highly decorative stone windows. Family and friends stand and turn as the room fills with anticipation for the ceremony to begin. To conclude the evening, a world class dinner accompanied by fine wines to satisfy the most discerning of palates is held in the Library. Swept off your feet by the splendour and utter romance of the setting, the dream like sequence is complete as you embark on your happily ever after. Once booked Highclere Castle will be available for your exclusive enjoyment. The venue fee starts at £15,000 + VAT depending on the season and your requirements. Allerton Castle Surrounded by rolling hills, Allerton Castle is a timeless regal statement. Built by Lord Mowbray, Segrave and Stourton in the 18th century, it is known as England’s most elegant gothic revival castle. Constructed to the highest level of craftsmanship, its halls are steeped in English heritage and breathtaking detail.

The Secret To A Sculpted Midriff Article by Caroline Topperman

When it comes to weddings there is a lot involved and for the health conscious bride a sculpted midriff is an absolute must. Of course it is easy to say that it’s a matter of simply losing body fat, but that is not necessarily going to create a toned middle. Showing off a beautiful waistline comes down to knowing how to maximize your workouts.

through hours of crunches and seeing little in the way of results, it can be rather frustrating, so we have consulted with the experts and learned that the key is to follow a system which targets your entire core. The following are five of our favourite tummy toning exercises, focusing on all of the major abdominal groups. Do them all at once, or build up your strength by starting with one at Your abdominals are only a part of your core a time. Sit ups Lying with your knees bent, feet flat on the floor hip distance apart and hands behind your head - feel your navel draw gently toward your spine and slowly start curling all the way up to a seated position whilst keeping your abdominals engaged.

Tip If you feel that you are overusing your legs, lengthen them along the floor and keep your arms straight out in front of you.

Tip

Crunches

These can replace sit ups if you experience neck pain. If you are working at an advanced level, lift your legs off the floor or place them on an exercise ball.

Keeping your hands behind your head, engage your abdominals and curl your shoulders off the floor. Hold this position for 3 seconds and then slowly curl back down.

Leg Lifts Lying on your back, cross your hands in front of your chest or place them on the floor next to you. Take a breath, engage your abdominals and on the exhale slowly lift your legs about 5 inches off the floor. Without letting your back arch, lower them to 1 inch off the floor, then lift them back up and repeat.

Tip If this is too challenging, you can start with your legs in the air straight or bent at a 90 degree angle. You can also place your feet on an exercise ball.

Tip If this bothers your hip flexors, slightly rotate your legs outwards to relieve the pressure.

Jack Knife sit ups Lie flat on your back and lift your arms straight up to the ceiling. Inhale. On the exhale, engage your abdominals and lift your legs and upper body at the same time until you reach a perfect V position. Hold for 3 seconds and then slowly roll back to the floor and to your starting position.

Plank Assume the push up position only place your forearms on the floor. Hold for 10 seconds to start, building up to 45 seconds. Remember to keep your abdominals and glutes engaged while keeping your body in one long line.

Tip When this becomes easy try alternating leg lifts. 163
