As wealthy nations lock in supplies of Covid-19 vaccines, nearly a quarter of the world’s population — mostly in low- and middle-income countries — will not have access to a shot until 2022, STAT writes, citing a new analysis. As of mid-November, high-income countries, including the European Union bloc, reserved 51% of nearly 7.5 billion doses of different Covid-19 vaccines, although these countries comprise just 14% of the world’s population. Meanwhile, only 6 of 13 manufacturers have reached deals with low- and middle-income countries.
A World Health Organization senior official says that the agency is in talks with Pfizer (PFE) to include its Covid-19 vaccine as part of an early global rollout, Reuters writes. Bruce Aylward, a WHO senior adviser, says that he saw a “strong commitment” on the part of Pfizer chief executive officer Albert Bourla to set prices at levels appropriate to poorer populations and he expects news on more manufacturers joining the list of providers to the Covax vaccine facility in coming weeks.
