Chelsea football fans should not sing Roman Abramovich’s name, a minister has said as he confirmed that the government would “facilitate” the club’s sale and survival.
Chris Philp, a minister in the Department for Culture, Media and Sport, said that the oligarch’s “very expensive lawyers” had meant a delay in imposing sanctions while the government built a “watertight” case against him.
Britain became the first country to sanction Abramovich yesterday, with ministers accusing him of having “blood on his hands” because of links to President Putin.
Philp said: “We can’t just arbitrarily take assets of people with no legal justification. As a country that respects the rule of law, we do have to do this in a way that is legal and will withstand
