Full content visible, double tap to read brief content.

Having extensively researched Viking legend, myth, and lore, Demery Matthews plays the role of Fate, spinning and twisting the fibers of her characters’ lives, weaving a richly textured composition, and then embroidering vivid detail to entice readers into seemingly foreign worlds. While she fuels her soul by exploring new places, learning about history, and writing fiction, it took the influence of Demery’s powerful characters to inspire the publication of The Wyn Series. These stories navigate trauma yet focus on healing and celebrating victorious outcomes. Born overseas, Demery lived and studied abroad yet spent most of her years occupying various regions within the United States. She asked herself, “Why not write about history’s most notorious adventure-seeking seafarers who journeyed open waters over a thousand years ago?” They left a legacy that to this day continues to invade minds and hold hearts captive. Indeed. Why not?

I normally read fantasy and science fiction (almost exclusively) and this was my first historical fiction book. It was easily on-par with some of the best books I've read and better than some of them. I was a bit hesitant trying another "indie" book; the first one I read was genuinely bad. However, with Weapons of Wyn my "2nd role of the dice" was rewarded and I was treated to a professionally written, very enjoyable read.

I was really impressed with the author's historical knowledge, yet I never felt like she was trying to prove that; the book was skillfully written and that knowledge was just organically woven into the story. The book of course centers around Braewyn, but has many other interesting, relatable and likable characters, Solli being my favorite. The Author's Note preceding the book and the maps on the author's website both enhanced my reading pleasure. Especially the latter. My OCD-minded brain "needs" to know where things take place, LOL.

So, I am hooked and on board with the story of Braewyn! I am looking forward to book 2 when it is available. If you're a fan of fiction, Weapons of Wyn is worth your time!

Weapons of Wyn is my first experience with Viking-era historical fiction. If I began with any trepidation at all, I need not have worried. I love this book! I will admit I was intrigued with the historical fiction sub-genre. I am descended from Vikings, at least I think I am. There is a chance since eighty percent of my ancestors were Swedish.

But what a beautiful voice! The author took me to places where I have traveled (England, Scotland including the Orkney Islands, Denmark) so my attention was grabbed from page one. The story pivots between first and third person, sometimes between chapters, sometimes within chapters. At first, I thought it would be confusing or distracting, but I found it refreshing.

Vivid descriptions do not overwhelm the reader. They pull us into the story and keep us there. I appreciated the details. One example: during a conversation between the young female protagonist (I’ll not name her here) and Boden, a man who can speak her language, the young woman describes the goddess Brig, how she sits cross-legged over Britannia’s entire landmass. I saw the goddess in my mind’s eye as I read her description. Two pages later, there is a beautiful image of Brig, just as I had pictured her!

The Author’s Note is appropriately placed at the front of the book. I found the attractive maps and the Family Tree quite useful. Also, there is a Glossary (listing historical & mythical figures, characters, and locations mentioned in the story) in the back. Don’t forget it’s there.

Many thanks to the author for her musical narrative and painstaking research. I eagerly await The Wyn Series Book 2!

It seems I am not the only reviewer positively hooked by this academically inclined novel that reads like a drama both sensuous and slow to burn. Diving into this world was electric, and when I came to the last sentence I gasped out loud. Really appreciate the author put a Book 2 teaser at the end! If you are looking to dive into the world of Vikings from a female perspective that is centered, strong, and an inspiration to encounter-- look no further. Truly. I do not write reviews often but was intimately moved by the depth of characters and comprehensiveness of the created world. It's a journey I don't want to end.

A sixteen-year-old Angle-Briton girl we’ll come to know as Braewyn is captured by Vikings, thrown into a longboat and transported across the sea without so much as a “thank you, ma’am” after her humble home village is sacked. Will she die from hunger, cold, exposure? Will she survive only to endure the living death of slavery? Or, will the hunky Viking warrior who commanded the raid turn out to be more compassionate than his savage appearance suggests?

“Weapons of Wyn” by Demery Matthews is a woman’s story from a very different time—an introspective tale of trauma and recovery, pain and growth, and finally an unlikely slow-burn romance. It’s also a scrupulously researched portrait of the Viking Age in northwestern Europe, chock full of authentic historical detail and even Old Norse names, legends and mythology.

Matthews weaves an immensely rich tapestry of thoughts, emotions and lore as we follow Braewyn’s journey from terrified captive to young woman coming into her own in a brave new world. If I had a quibble, I felt the pacing sometimes lagged from information overload, and the story could been made to move more swiftly by sprinkling in the detail more sparingly.

Nevertheless, “Weapons of Wyn” is an intriguing, moving and pleasantly surprising love story that is sure to please fans of both women’s fiction and Viking Age romance.

Weapons of Wyn is truly captivating! If you already enjoy stories from the Viking Age then this is a MUST HAVE addition to your collection! The first book in a series, the adventures & characters in Weapons of Wyn will take you on a journey of survival intertwined with an unexpected twist. The historical detail & writing is remarkable. Not only will you escape into this time period, but you will be educated along the way to a culture that few take the time to really understand & with such accuracy.

Weapons of Wyn is a novel you can’t pass up & makes a great gift as well. Can’t wait for Book 2!

5.0 out of 5 stars Love and History with an Authentic Approach to the 9th Century Anglo Saxon and Viking Era
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on August 16, 2023
This is the first book in a new series that explores an interesting approach to a tortuous love story that is like a slow burn between two of the main characters Braewyn and Eirikr. The way the chapters are developed are linked to the writer’s extensive research of Old Norse language that predates it and are named as such in the book. Demery Mathews explains this at the beginning of the book and there is also an extensive glossary and further information at the end of the book. The use of interpretation of the meaning of the runes that are used at the beginning of each chapter is also a novel approach. In terms of learning about Scandinavian history this again is well researched. The book is well written and can be read by young readers but also by adults of any age. The setting is in 860 AD as all that Braewyn knows in her young life is snatched from her in a ‘Viking’ raid. There are elements of Norse mythology and Pagan beliefs intertwined throughout the book that add some magic and world building to the story. The characters in the book are interesting and I would recommend this book to anyone who likes romance and reading about this era. It is not a straightforward romance to say the least but no spoilers. I look forward to the next book in the series.

5.0 out of 5 stars A viking story with a difference
Reviewed in Australia on August 22, 2023
The first book in a series by Demery Matthew’s. Through the eyes of a young girl we see the ravaging that befalls the Ængle-Briton settlement where she lives. The horrors that she witnesses and her eventual capture by the invaders. She is the only woman taken aboard the Viking ship along with a handful of men from her community. The terrors she relives whilst on that ship and the fears of what awaits her at the hands of the marauders. The name of this book is so fitting to the story as the story unfolds the reader can clearly see where the name of the book came from. We are not told the girl’s name at the beginning of the book and that adds to the intrigue of the story. The descriptive text takes you into the story switching from first person and third person throughout the book is interesting. This is a story of survival and strength of character of the girl - will she or won’t she fall in love with her captor who is honourable, caring and reliable. Will she ever get to go home? This novel is very well researched and well written. Demery Matthew’s has added a comprehensive glossary, family tree and maps which add to the reader’s experience as well as the meaning of runes at the start of each chapter, and a host of historical information and mythology which is very interesting. I really enjoyed this first book and am eagerly awaiting the next book in the series.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Captivating Storyline, following the struggles and resurgence of the characters within
Reviewed in Australia on August 27, 2023
A truly wonderful debut novel for Deremy Matthews. She draws you back to the times of the Viking era, in an enthralling story where a young girl finds herself brutally torn away from all she has ever known, witness to her loved ones and village ravaged by marorders. She finds herself fighting not only to survive, but to fighting unsuspected feelings developing for those who captured her. A brilliant display of strength and resilience. How can one not admire this.
I am looking forward to the next chapter in this series. If you enjoy reading historical fiction, you will definitely enjoy this book. I highly recommend this book.
