Dominant?
More like dominated.
On Friday, defensive coordinator Gregg Williams said his defense was close to being dominant, that it just had to finish plays to become elite. On Sunday, it was overmatched by a 49ers offense that was without George Kittle and Deebo Samuel, allowing points 17 seconds after the opening kickoff in a 31-13 loss that wasn’t even that close.
If Raheem Mostert wasn’t taking the first play from scrimmage untouched 80 yards, Jimmy Garoppolo was torching the secondary on one leg or Jerick McKinnon was converting a third-and-31 with a 55-yard run.
“We needed to eliminate all of the explosive plays on defense,” coach Adam Gase said. “We didn’t do that.”
Or, as linebacker Jordan Jenkins lamented, “We just got embarrassed.”
Quinnen Williams declined to offer much on what went wrong, repeatedly saying he had to watch the film. He was the Jets best defensive player on Sunday, producing seven tackles and two sacks.
“I’m going to keep it blunt: We haven’t shown progress,” Jenkins said. “It’s been rinse and repeat for the last two games. It’s either we’re going to keep getting embarrassed or we’re going to respond.
“This got to stop.”
The 49ers produced 359 yards of offense, despite Garoppolo sitting out the second half with an ankle injury. They ran for 182 yards on 29 carries even with Mostert hurting his knee and leaving the game for good late in the second quarter.
Considering all the injuries the 49ers were dealing with, this was arguably a worse performance than last Sunday’s feeble effort against the Bills, when the Jets allowed Josh Allen to set a career-high with 312 yards passing and run for 57 more yards and a touchdown.
Jenkins said the Jets problems aren’t merely talent. It’s guys not being in the correct spots, getting out of their designated gaps, which the 49ers exposed on the long Mostert and McKinnon runs.
“After this week, it hurts. We pride ourselves on [stopping the run], and it don’t look like we stop the run,” Jenkins said. “Don’t look [like] we pride ourselves on it. … We’re supposed to be the run-stopping defense.”
Gregg Williams, the team’s defensive coordinator, tried to spin that performance against the Bills, saying had the Jets been able to wrap up Allen it would’ve been a “dominant” outing. It will be hard for him to say anything positive about this showing.
