Oscars 2011 red carpet: best dressed gals

While I was tucked up in bed during the 83rd Academy Awards I couldn’t help but take a peek on Twitter for some first-glance style gossip. So what was the talk of the Twitterati?

Everyone was amazed at Penelope Cruz’s figure (and rack, which was giving J Hud’s a run for its money) on the red carpet only a MONTH after giving birth, Christian Bale had turned up as Jesus and Cate Blanchett’s Givenchy Couture gown was causing a controversial stir.

Designed by Ricardo Tisci, I adored the almost futuristic cut of Cate’s dress, but - and call me a philistine - I just wasn’t keen on the algae looking detail on the back *deflates balloon around room*.

Unintentionally I seem to have taken a liking to the no-frills variety this year, with clean sillhouettes and muted shades.

I am in love with the set and costume design of Boardwalk Empire at the moment, so my eyes popped out of their sockets when I saw Annette Bening in this art deco Naeem Khan frock. This gorgeous, beaded gown from his Fall 2011 RTW collection was first seen this month at New York Fashion Week.

Scarlett Johansson in Dolce & Gabbana. I don’t usually take to this end of the colour spectrum, but she looks like a delicious berry smoothie in this lacy ensemble.

Camila Alves in Kaufman Franco. Her sun-kissed Brazilian complexion means she can get away with innocuous black. Can’t help but notice that the cut would also make a gorgeous wedding gown.

Enter the world of Carri Mundane via Japanese photobooth

Fashion label of Carri Mundane (designer of THAT tracksuit in M.I.A.’s ‘Galang’ video), Cassette Playa, didn’t show any clothes at London Fashion Week this season. Instead attendees were invited to enter her world through a Japanese-style photobooth where they could create their own gifs loaded with Cassette Playa’s signature psychedelic neon meets Aztec, computer game weirdness. So we erm had a go..

The queues

Last year, the PPQ duo Amy Molyneaux and Percy Parker put an all black/dual heritage lineup of models on the catwalk in polka dots and tribal sundresses. Catching the attention of a few gaga wannabes the young and famous (and not so famous alike), queues to be seated at this year’s Spring show seemed to go on forever in the BFC Show Space.

The show

This year’s Spring 2011 Ready to Wear collection carried on the animal prints in dazzly, fruity shades. They accompanied the collection of blue and white candy-striped pieces, peplum dresses and strappy sundresses. The North-African meets French Riviera-inspired looks, named ‘Hassan’, were topped off with fez hats. Definitely some of PPQ’s more grown up looks.

Who attended

Amongst the droves of air kisses were Michelle Williams (dressed in PPQ AW10), Amber Rose, the xx’s Oliver Sim and Brigitte Nielson. Think I spotted Ozwald Boateng at some point too.

From treadmill to red carpet

I was discussing inappropriate gymwear with friends this week, and one mentioned spotting a girl working the cross trainer in a matching flannel tracksuit à la Juicy Couture.

Heave! Besides the obvious, velour tracksuits are hideous because the material has the same affect on me as cotton wool or nails across slate.

So what does Erin Fetherston turn up wearing to the Met Gala?

Aha. Look closely and it is Juicy’s hi shine velour. The gown is a sneak preview of what to expect from the new Erin-Juicy collaboration. I don’t quite know what to make of it on the red carpet. It’s a bit like when the ketchup on your fry-up runs into your baked beans. Not. quite. right.

But the Costume Institute Gala is all about the extravagance and being a little wacky and I give that accolade to M.I.A who wore a specially commissioned Alexander Wang for Gap piece. Unusual as it is, this sheer gold spiderweb of a frock is still toned down compared to her usual style. She’s one of the few who can pull it off and looks effing great in it.

Oscar at the Oscars

Cameron Diaz in Oscar de la Renta

This is my fave red carpet dress from the Academy Awards this year.

Cameron went for the ‘safe’ option, in comparison to some of the unconventional gowns (Charlize and her rose boobies, or Zoe Saldana’s bottom half looking like an overflowing slush puppy). But in this Oscar de la Renta sparklefest, I think she looks absolutely stunning like. That is all.

Oh, and will somebody send me one plez?
