Update: Langford, to save fuel, urges an end to Saturday mail delivery

Birmingham Mayor Larry Langford wants the U.S. Postal Service to stop Saturday mail delivery to save gas.Langford today said he will contact Alabama's congressmen with his proposal.

Langford made his proposal this morning in a speech to the Alabama Postal Workers Union.

Langford last week announced a four-day work week for 4,000 Birmingham city employees, effective July 1. That plan received national and international attention. Langford was featured on Fox News Channel and ABC World News Tonight in stories detailing how the nation is coping with near $4 a gallon gas prices.

Langford Friday said he would contact U.S. Rep. Artur Davis, D-Birmingham, with his proposal.

"If you get a letter on Saturday there's nothing you can do about it till Monday anyway," Langford said later this afternoon. "We've got to look at every way possible to conserve gasoline."

While the savings would be to the federal government, Langford said any conservation in oil benefits the entire nation. High gas prices is a crisis that affects everyone, he said.

The idea came in an email Langford received from a Miami man who had heard about the city's four-day work schedule.

"I don't care who comes with the idea, if it makes sense, we ought to embrace it," Langford said.
