Overview

NC will prepare you with the expertise to begin working in an industry in need of highly-skilled cannabis professionals.

This Commercial Cannabis Production program will provide training in the biology and cultural practices of cannabis production including plant nutrition, environment, lighting, climate control, pest and disease control and cultivar selection.

  • Comply with and execute appropriate security protocols.

  • Students will have an opportunity to participate in an internship with a licensed producer or industry-related project.

  1. Evaluate the impacts of various production decisions such as methodology, choice of varietals, and labour composition on the quality and yield of cannabis crop.

  2. Design and implement plant nutrition and lighting programs to support optimal crop growth.

  3. Design and implement appropriate integrated pest management (IPM) strategies throughout the cannabis production cycle to mitigate crop losses and protect crop quality.

  4. Interpret chemical, environmental and physiological data to assess crop health and quality and adapt growth conditions and pest management strategies in response to this information.

  5. Comply with all provincial, federal and international regulatory and trade requirements for the safe and legal production, processing and packaging of cannabis.

  6. Create annual and longer-term production plans to inform the procurement of raw materials and to ensure the consistent supply of high-quality crop.

  7. Develop and implement a costing system to accurately document and track crop production costs.

  8. Plan and oversee the allocation of staffing and space to support the execution of production plans..

  9. Interpret budgets and financial data to inform cannabis production operations.

  10. Access and analyze relevant contemporary research and regulations and apply findings, where appropriate, to cannabis production processes.

Admission Requirements

  • Ontario College Diploma, Advanced Diploma, Bachelor’s Degree (or equivalent) in the areas of Horticulture, Greenhouse Technology, Agricultural Sciences, Plant Sciences, Biology or a related discipline and
  • Proof of English proficiency

The on-campus cannabis cultivation facility used to deliver the hands-on practical elements in the Commercial Cannabis Program at Niagara College is governed by a Health Canada license under the Federal Cannabis Act.

A student that chooses to participate in the Commercial Cannabis Program or any activities related to the Commercial Cannabis Program does so at their own discretion and is responsible for any implications resulting from their participation. Niagara College does not have any control or influence over the actions of governments neither domestic nor international and is not liable for government or third-party actions, penalties or damages resulting from the decision to participate in the Commercial Cannabis program, nor any activities related to said program.

Pre-Admission Requirements

As part of the admissions process some programs have pre-admission requirements.

Domestic Applicants:
  • For applicants who have studied outside of these fields of study OR those who have an acceptable combination of related work experience and postsecondary education (as determined by Niagara College), a portfolio must be submitted.
  • Students are required to be a minimum of 19 years of age.
  • Prior to registration, applicants will be required to complete a criminal record check to ensure eligibility to obtain the security clearance required under the Cannabis Act in order to work in the industry. This criminal record check will also be required to complete your work placement planned for the second semester. A criminal record check dated more than 90 days prior to the start of classes is considered invalid.

Pre-admission requirements for domestic applicants can be found at niagaracollege.ca/par.

Domestic applicants include Canadian citizens, permanent residents and Convention refugees.

International Applicants:
  • For applicants who have studied outside of these fields of study OR those who have an acceptable combination of related work experience and postsecondary education (as determined by Niagara College), a portfolio must be submitted.

Program Requirements
Physical Fitness
  • Students applying to Environment and Horticulture programs are often required to tolerate physical activity such as walking over uneven terrain, standing, bending, lifting, and carrying equipment.
  • These expectations are reflected in our coursework, and applicants of this program should be highly motivated and have an appropriate level of fitness when entering this program.
Transportation
  • Students are responsible for their own transportation in order to complete program requirements which may not be readily accessible by public transportation.
  • Program requirements could include co-ops, placements, volunteer requirements, practical labs, field projects, assignments, clinicals, or any other off-campus visits required as part of the program’s curriculum.
Computer/Technology Requirements

Students are responsible for ensuring that they have a Microsoft Windows 10 based desktop or laptop system that meets or exceeds the following general personal computer technology requirements:

  • A desktop or laptop system running on an updated Microsoft Windows 10 operating system.
  • Minimum 256GB SSD storage and 8 GB memory.
  • An integrated or peripheral video camera, microphone and speaker system.
  • Reliable internet connectivity with Broadband capabilities (a minimum download speed of 5 Mbps) is recommended.

Niagara College will not be able to provide support for systems different than the above specifications. Any provided software may not operate properly. Academic software for your courses (supported under the Microsoft Windows 10 operating system) will be made available for download and remote use. Access will also be provided to remote high performance computer labs if software downloads are not feasible.

Note: There is no support for Chromebooks or Apple products for this program. (learn more)
