EDITORS LETTER L’Wren & Peaches British MODE is vibrant with the colours and feel of British Springtime, April has truly arrived and everything is glorious however, this Editor’s letter is tinged by sadness at the sudden and unexpected losses of two impressive women: designer L’Wren Scott on the 17th March and on the 7th April the unexpected death of Peaches Geldoff. L’Wren began modelling for Thierry Mugler and Chanel later going on to become a designer worn by none other than the First Lady, Michele Obama and actresses such as Angelina Jolie and Penelope Cruz. Her collections have been inspired by artists such a Klimt, in his Golden Period and David Hockney’s drawings of Yorkshire. Scott’s SS14 Collection, ‘Tagasode’ beautifully hybridises Eastern and Western aesthetics. The feel is light and airy with a delightful feminine silhouette. Distinctive and effortlessly stylish L’Wren will be sadly missed but never forgotten. Still reeling from this news the British MODE team was further shocked by the loss of model, writer and TV Presenter Peaches Geldof- daughter of Sir Bob Geldof and the late Paula Yates. Far from being a wallflower, Peaches was expressive, often outspoken and a devoted young mother. A writing talent who began with a fashion column for Elle Girl when she was merely 15, Peaches went on to write for the Daily Telegraph and the Guardian. Peaches is was a distinctive voice whom the fashion world will sorely miss.

Since its launch in 2005 Loeffler Randall has seen a rapidly expanding and loyal fan base develop throughout the fashion world. A darling of the most prolific fashion editors and stylists in the industry, the label has gained a reputation as the brand of choice for those who are in the know and yearning for their fix of laid back luxe. Now stocked by over 200 retailers worldwide, along with a wildly popular online retail store housing main collections along with online exclusives, Loeffler Randall offer a unique blend of classic sophistication and effortless city chic that has stylistas such as Jessica Alba and Diana Kruger flocking. Soft leathers and a taste of LA cool form the basis of the brands spring collection, with every item displaying all the indicators of a future wardrobe favourite. Gathering the best of the season’s trends and interjecting them with the heady scent of summer loving, soft pastels, vibrant citrus prints and metallic details all contribute their hit towards a stand-out collection. Footwear in the Loeffler Randall spring collection is a step ahead in lessons of effortless elegance. Styles range greatly, from the sensible but seriously stylish ‘Alix’ stacked heel, peep toe bootie, to the smoking hot, Latino inspired ‘Ceci’ whip stitch sandal; a papaya hued leather creation that cries out for evenings spent dancing the salsa in Rio. Add to this heady concoction of styles more delicately star strewn sandals, cheetah calf-hair lace-up flats and graphic lizard embossed leather heels, and the result is a collection to 22

see you through the hottest of summers in the Miami heat. When shoes are this stylish, it can only be expected that the bags in the collection are rather special too, and they certainly don’t disappoint. When some of fashion’s biggest names give accessories the green flag then you know they are fit to embrace with gusto, and the Rider bag holds the potential to render others in your collection surplus to requirement. The soft leather attachÊ construction mirrors that sweeping the catwalks for SS14, whilst also combining the timeless design with beautiful functionality; a double gusset interior is as beautiful as the exterior yet also houses card and mobile compartments that make an, albeit glamorous everyday life, more manageable. Sleek gold hardware finishes off the Rider design perfectly, and with achingly ontrend pastel versions sitting alongside sleek graphic prints and even a small but perfectly formed Mini Rider, this is the perfect luxe alternative to the traditional satchels that have previously dominated. Loeffler Randall has built a loyal celebrity following upon an inane ability to communicate the relaxed ambience of summer through accessories that automatically transport you to the hippest haunts in LA, if not in body then at least in mind. With uber-model Miranda Kerr and hip Emma Roberts proudly toting the label around the Hollywood hills, it is little wonder that Loeffler Randall is the name on the lips of stylists everywhere for SS14. 23

This design feature not only makes it easier to slip into the swimsuit, it sculpts a feminine silhouette which is guaranteed to turn heads when you’re sipping an ice cold mojito by the pool. If you’re not quite feeling the Caribbean vibe and would prefer to rock a more subtly styled bikini this summer, head to JETS and browse the White Label 2014 collection. The bandeau is perfect for petite ladies with smaller busts, whilst the spider back is an excellent choice for those wanting to reveal a little flesh and the high neck shape can make humble chests appear slightly larger. The refreshing White Label Collection is a comprised of a more modest range of swim suits featuring a variety of cut out detailing and panelling, giving each piece a very chic, high fashion look. JETS have created a marvellous range with couture tailoring, showcasing their impeccable understanding of the female form. The collection as a whole is visually striking, but one of our favourite pieces is the ‘Temptress’ swimsuit. Featuring an exotic Egyptian mosaic print, the design is ideal for those who love colour and would look particularly beautiful on those with an olive complexion. Arabesque

50

There are few things we adore more than leather, aside from, of course, elegant handmade leather sandals. The distinctly beautiful designs from La Paire are what makes each pair timeless and complimentary to any summer ensemble. For the woman who wants to express as much through her careful choice of footwear as she does with her holiday wardrobe, La Paire is the ideal boutique brand. The ethos behind the label is to create superbly hand crafted shoes from only the finest leathers, whilst offering a selection of vibrant and eye-catching styles. The brand offers a year round collection for summer holidays, romantic honeymoons and those who wish to escape the winter months. For spring/summer 2014, La Paire are launching a collection entitled ‘Arabesque’. Ancient artistic decoration is a key motif throughout, with each piece inspired by travel and the gloriously rich culture of Morocco. Founder, Amy La, was particularly inspired by the floral and geometric patterns and motifs of the Iznik tiles of Morocco, stating that this has been conveyed with the use of striking designs and colours. Her love of the lotus palmettes and blossoms that can be found in the designs of the Mediterranean ceramics has also enriched the overall design aesthetic. The vibrancy of colours and intricate details exemplifying the brand’s ethos of si51

multaneous style and elegance. Arabesque as a collection includes three distinctive styles: Rose, Lily and Viola. The Rose sandal is a homage to the traditional Grecian sandal and is crafted with delicate, intricately designed straps. Available in three colours, turquoise, white and black, each feature gold accenting straps adding a lovely hint of glamour and to the sandal.

T

he Lily sandal is a style that is timeless, with a flattering strap and heel that will suit all women. Available in both a luxurious metallic leather and a soft suede, both designs are contrasted with a delicate but striking printed leather at the front of the sandal. Finally, the collection’s Viola Sandal is a classic style that has a delicate scalloped fringe contrasting against its piping, making this a truly show stopping sandal. The wider strap across the toes ensures ultimate comfort for strolls through cobbled streets and across clear, sandy beaches. It’s also available in three colours, navy and white, beige and black and white with red patterned trim. We can’t quite decide which piece we favour but are sure that they will be wearable for years to come. For soft feminine footwear, La Paire is the perfect go-to brand.

For your city break, ideally you will need clothes for travelling, sight seeing during the day and for heading out at night for dinner and drinks. The hardest part about packing is the panic. The panic that you won’t pack enough and that you will regret not bringing that sixth pair of strappy sandals! To make it easier, break it up into three outfits, two for day time, one for night time and if you make sure they are interchangeable, three outfits become six, with plenty to choose from.

W

ith summer right around the corner, it’s essential that you pack the staple maxi dress. Great for all seasons, when worn with flats or heels it can be transitioned from day to night. They are an essential item to pack for comfort, style and versatility. We’re currently loving the Just Cavalli Georgette Orchid Maxi Dress, available from Harrods and retailing at £1,075.00. It’s always best to pack light when it comes to shoes and opt for earthy tones as they’re easy to pair up with many different outfits. We’d recommend the Giuseppe Zanotti Fish Bone Sandals for £610.00. Finally, when it comes to accessories we all have a tendency to over pack, but try to keep it simple with classic pieces and one statement piece for any special event.

There are many elements to ‘The Perfect Date’, of course top of the list is the perfect partner! However the chances of you knowing all about this person before your first date is rare. So remember the fist rule within 5 seconds of meeting someone, whether it be an important meeting or a first date, a subconscious opinion will be formed about you based solely on your appearance! This means one thing and ONE thing only - your date outfit must to be perfect! Firstly, find out the venue, you wouldn’t want to make a huge faux pas and be dressed inappropriately. If the date is going to be a surprise then ask whether jeans are appropriate, this will give you a good guideline. There are not many places you can’t go to in jeans and with denim being so big this season the choice is absolutely huge! Steer clear of the shredded look for a first date, it may be ‘cool’ but you’ll want to look sleek and sophisticated. A satin blouse for instance, when paired with a statement necklace and sexy heels would be ideal in this instance. You’re aiming for it to look effortless, even if its taken hours to achieve. The idea is to look natural and know what will work so that you will carry yourself with ease and confidence.

Still need a helping hand to create that ethereal healthy finish? Invest in either a cream based or powder highlighter. I simply adore the Kevyn Aucoin Celestial Powder in Candlelight (£34) which is well worth the money. Dusting lightly across the cheekbones, down the nose, over the cupids bow and across the eyelids will have you instantly looking like you’ve banked a full 12 hours sleep. Pastels and subtle nudes are still big for this Spring Summer so get your hands on lilacs, mauves and peaches. To be right on trend try Nails Inc’s latest Floral offering of Floral Polishes (£12) which have four rainbow shades containing floral-shaped glitter particles.

With this focus on skin for SS14, foundation formulations are now more lightweight and radiant than ever, whilst allowing buildable coverage. My current kit favourites are Shisheido’s Sheer & Perfect (£29) and Smashbox Liquid Halo (£27), for a silky natural finish.

This season is all about teaming pastel hues with natural skin. A peach, pink or coral flush will add a great pop of colour. Burberry’s latest offering, Light Glow in Peony (£29), is lovely and lightweight and gives a youthful glow.

*100g golden syrup *50g salted butter *100g light muscovado sugar *120ml double cream *2 tbsp syrup from stem ginger jar

Method For the gingerbread, preheat the oven to 180C, fan 160C, gas 4. Firstly mix the flour, sugar, baking powder, salt, black pepper, ginger and cloves together in a large bowl. Then melt the butter in a saucepan with the Badger blandford flyer ale and treacle. Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ones and mix until smooth, and fold through the egg. Add the cream and syrup and simmer for a further minute, remove and cool. To assemble the trifle, turn out the gingerbread and cut in half. Spread a little of the caramel sauce over half of it, then sandwich together with the other half and cut into pieces and use half to line the base of a 3 litre trifle dish. Drizzle over 3 tablespoons of Badger blandford flyer ale over the gingerbread, top with half of the sliced bananas followed by half of the remaining caramel sauce. Repeat these layers. Stir the stem ginger into the custard and spread over the top. Whisk the double cream to soft peaks and spoon on top of the trifle. Felice Tocchini’s Sweet Potato Pudding

Created by celebrity chef and sweet potato lover Felice Tocchini, this recipe makes enough to feed the entire family, and would be a delightful end to a traditional roast dinner on Easter Sunday.

88

Serves 6

¼ pint/140ml puddings

Ingredients *100g butter, plus extra for greasing *75g caster sugar *75g brown sugar *50ml vegetable oil *2 eggs *150g self-raising flour, plus extra for dusting *½tsp chopped dried or fresh lavender *200g sweet potatoes, grated

Method 1. Grease 6 pudding basins with butter then dust with flour, shaking out any excess. 2. Beat together the butter, sugar and oil. 3. Add the eggs, one at a time, beating after each addition. 4. Fold in the flour and lavender, then add the sweet potatoes and combine. 5. Pour the mixture into the prepared pudding basins. Cover each pudding with aluminium foil and cook in a steamer for about 40-45 minutes or until cooked (if using a single large basin the cooking time will increase to about 1hour 15mins). 6. Remove the puddings from the moulds and serve with a dollop of crème fraîche. (If you don’t have a steamer cover the bottom of a deep roasting tray with kitchen paper, place the puddings on the paper and fill the tray with water half way up the pudding moulds. Cover the tray with foil and place in a preheated oven 180°C/gas mark 4 for 40-45 minutes.)

For most of us though, the day itself is about cementing a union between two people and the venue of choice should represent that union. Wow, I am getting quite teary already!

to ‘feel the space’ and probe the wedding co-ordinator for all the info you require including: menus, wedding packages available and onsite accommodation. Try to get a real feel as to how the day itself will unfold. Make a list of questions beforehand and do not be afraid to ask. It is their job to make your day a reality. If you are concerned about the costs involved, tell them and see what they can offer. Summer bbq’s or sharing foods, such as homemade pizzas with all the relevant accompaniments, is all the rage at the moment and can often be much lighter on the budget than a traditional evening buffet. A great coordinator generally has a solution, but of course you must be realistic!

o, down to the nitty gritty. Where do we start? Well, generally the geographical location is the best place to begin. Once this has been decided you can work with the venues located in that area. Even if you have an ideal place in mind, I always advise to view at least 5 other spaces to spark ideas and inspire you both. The amount of people that have a venue in mind and then choose another is Selecting a wedding venue is incredible so make sure you a bit like buying a house for don’t limit the possibilities. the day. And if you want/need input from others or need some re-assurance then feel free to take key family members or friends on the second visit. And finally, once the decision has been made, make sure you put some thought into the actual day itself. Don’t just let the wedding coordinator put together a generic day for you.
