Tide DB target sets decision date (BamaOnLine)
quote:

Four-star athlete Joel Williams released a top six on Friday afternoon with plans to announce a commitment on Sept. 9. The teams in the mix include Alabama, Florida, Houston, Kentucky, LSU, and Tennessee in no particular order.

If you've been tracking this recruitment for the last five or so weeks, you'd know it's the Crimson Tide that's been trending for the Baton Rouge (La.) Madison Prep Academy product as of late.

After camping at the Capstone early last month, Williams climbed atop the Tide's defensive backs board. Shortly after his performance he decommitted from Florida, at which point Alabama took hold of the momentum in his recruitment.

Williams returned to Alabama (with his mom) for the Champions Cookout prior to the Dead Period.

“He really thinks I can come in and play right away,” Williams told BOL of Nick Saban's message to him. “He told me he likes players like me that are versatile, big, and fast. He thinks I can play corner, nickel and safety. He said he’ll put me anywhere.”

The 247Sports Crystal Ball has swung in favor of the Tide in the weeks to follow. It currently sits at 81 percent in favor of Bama.

“Bama is the school that texts me every day,” he said of why he likes the program so much. “They show me a lot of love. They’re Alabama. They’ve got a legacy and they send players to the league.”

At 6-foot-1, 180 pounds, Williams is rated the No. 17 athlete and the No. 299 overall player in the country, per the industry-generated 247Sports Composite Rankings.

Williams is one of several defensive backs that Tide is currently sitting in a favorable positions for. Others include: four-star athlete Kristian Story, four-star safety Xavion Alford and junior college cornerback Nadab Joseph.

Alabama currently sits at No. 2 in the 247Sports Composite Team Recruiting Rankings with a score of 287.11. Clemson resides atop the standings with a score of 297.92.

Suspended Alabama tight end enters NCAA transfer portal (BamaOnLine)
quote:

Alabama tight end Kedrick James has entered the NCAA transfer portal, 247Sports has learned. AL.com’s Matt Zenitz first reported the transaction.

James, a junior, provided depth for the Crimson Tide tight end group a season ago. He was suspended for the Oklahoma and Clemson playoff games but saw time in five games (Louisville, Ole Miss, Texas A&M, Louisiana, Arkansas). James did not record any stats as a sophomore. In the spring, James recorded a 29-yard touchdown reception in the Tide’s A-Day Game.

James and offensive linemen Deonte Brown and Elliot Baker did not travel with the team to the Capital One Orange Bowl last season for what was announced as violations of team rules and policies. Alabama head coach Nick Saban later revealed the tight end will be suspended the first four games of the upcoming season, leaving the Crimson Tide extremely thin at the position.

Starters Hale Hentges and Irv Smith Jr. have moved onto the NFL, leaving Miller Forristall as the only UA tight end with meaningful game experience. That’s why linebacker Cameron Latu was working with the tight ends for all of spring practice and will likely continue to practice there.

“We do a lot of experimenting in spring to see if there is a guy at a position that might have a better opportunity to contribute at another position,” Saban said. “Obviously losing Hale (Hentges) and Irv (Smith Jr.), we’ve got some experience issues at tight end and also some depth issues. Having another guy (James) suspended for four games next year at that position, I mean, you’re taking three out of the first four guys, so we need to get some people there.”

Established in October of last year, the NCAA’s transfer portal now allows collegiate student-athletes to merely enter their name into an online database and wait for collegiate teams to contact them. It is also worth noting that players can withdraw their name from the portal, too.

Alabama has already lost five scholarship players to transfers this year in quarterbacks Jalen Hurts (Oklahoma) and Layne Hatcher (Arkansas State), offensive lineman Richie Petitbon (Illinois), defensive back Kyriq McDonald (Cincinnati) and long snapper Scott Meyer (Vanderbilt).

Note: After a player enters the transfer portal, his current school is no longer bound to renew his scholarship for the next academic year, even if he's not picked up by another school. Sidenote: Layne Hatcher was not on scholarship as the media has assumed.

Per Tim (BOL), James hasn't done what was needed to get back in Saban's good graces. Instead, he's gotten out of shape too.

Looks like he gone. It's a sad story that he's wasted his talent and the great opportunity he had at Bama. Hopefully, he'll find a good landing spot and take advantage of a fresh start, by growing up and getting his priorties where they need to be.

He'll have to sit out the 2019 season but has a redshirt available to use to avoid losing a year of eligibility. However, I don't know if he'll then have to serve his 4-game suspension in 2020. If so, that may make it a bit harder for him to get picked up from the portal.

Sidenote: His departure will open a spot needed for incoming grad transfer OL Landon Dickerson under the 85 limit.

Speaking of tight ends...

Roster Countdown: #22 Harris, #21 Mayden and #20 Latu (BamaOnLine | segments)
quote:

Counting down the Alabama football roster three players at a time. Next up: running back Najee Harris, safety Jared Mayden and tight end Cameron Latu.

20 TE  Cameron Latu

2018 season: Saw action in two games, recording his first career tackle in the opener against Louisville. In appearing in no more than the allowed four contests, Latu qualified for a redshirt.

2019 spring practice: With depth at outside linebacker not a major concern, Latu transitioned to offense, working with the tight ends throughout spring drills. With injuries and absences impacting the position beyond projected starter Miller Forristall, Latu found himself with the Crimson (first-team) offense on A-Day. The redshirt freshman joined Forristall in the two-tight end sets that have been a staple for Alabama offensively in the Nick Saban era, hauling in two passes for 37 yards in the scrimmage. Ozzie Newsome Most Improved Freshman Award recipient.

What he brings to the table: Latu offers prototype physical attributes, whether it's at the in-line position or off the ball as a move option. With Kedrick James suspended for the first four games of the season (and now in the transfer portal), Latu is safely inside the top three players at the position with the potential to nail down the second spot. Background at outside linebacker should help him in dealing with those guys, especially as a blocker.

It was "Puff Puff Pass" strike three for James earlier this week. He's a knucklehead. A real shame. Lots of physical talent. Hopefully he can get it together above the shoulders, go somewhere outside the SEC, and become a responsible adult. If so, he has the upside to make a lot of money playing football.

The article I posted a few posts above reads like Latu had a strong spring and appears to be the #3 TE, perhaps even starting in 2-TE sets. Latu had that role for A-day, as Major Tennison was in concussion protocol. Of course there's still fall camp to go, which includes the addition of Jahleel Billingsley.

Nuggets on Bama's top 2021 QB targets

2021 4-star QB Jalen Milroe 6-1.5/194 TX hudl

After Milroe camped at UA in June, he tabbed Bama his leader. Milroe has moved up his timeframe to commit before the 2019 FB season. He was CBd to Bama today (July 12) by Hank (BOL) and Texas mod Mike Roach; he has no other CBs.

Per Hank, Bama's top two 2021 QB targets are Milroe and Drake Maye (4* QB 6-4/200 NC hudl). Maye camped at Bama in early June.

ETA: If Bama is able to flip Bryce Young, I think we'll probably only sign one 2021 QB, and it appears Jalen Milroe could be jumping on board soon.

Looking at the 2021 target list I see just three players out of 51 that are from Alabama.
It's still a little early but that is not good sign for Alabama HS football in 2021.

I will be very surprised if Maye does not end up at UNC. Several of his team mates will already be there and he wants to be the only QB in the class for whatever team gets him.

Yeah, Maye does seem very likely to go to UNC, considering his Athletic Background (below).
quote:

Drake Maye (247Sports)

Evaluation

Has a big frame and is continuing to fill out. Brothers are over 6-foot-7, so he may very well not be done growing. Is relatively streamline at this stage and has room to add a significant amount of weight. Doubles as a very good high school basketball player and has bloodlines in both sports with his father and brothers playing at the Power 5 level. Has a quick, smooth release and excels on hitting in-breaking short and intermediate throws. Gets the ball out quickly in a ball distributor role while working in the quick game. Had a productive and efficient sophomore season as a passer and should continue to build off his production. Will need to continue improving his downfield passing, evading pressure and ability to make plays outside the pocket- as he has a tendency to be a bit stationary. Projects as an eventual top prospect in the 2021 cycle and Power Five starter with the upside of developing into a NFL Draft pick.

Athletic Background

Drake Maye is the brother of North Carolina hoops forward Luke Maye.

His father, Mark, played quarterback for the Tar Heels
.

Bama DL target sets decision date (BamaOnLine-VIP | segment)
quote:

Alabama and LSU lead the race for Alexandria (La.) defensive tackle Jacobian Guillory, The four-star defender had planned to announce his college decision at the All-American Bowl on Jan. 4, however, on Friday Guillory called an audible (via Twitter), opting to make his plans known on Dec. 20, the last Day of the Early Signing Period.
quote:

Jacobian "Big Tank" Guillory @Jthabigboy
So I know I’ve been putting out dates on when I am committing and it has been all over the place. So now this is my official date I will be SIGNING to a college on December 20, 2019 !!
5:10 PM · Jul 12, 2019

ETA: Hank checked with Guillory to make sure his tweet meant that the school he signs with will also be announced on Dec 20 instead of keeping it under wraps until Jan 4 as originally planned.
