Jolie was "enchanted" with north Wales when she filmed there

MovieMap North Wales goes online from Monday, providing a guide to 30 different filming locations used on the big and small screens.

Angelina Jolie, Sir Anthony Hopkins, Demi Moore and the Carry On team have all filmed on location in the region.

The devisers aim to attract an extra 30,000 visitors to the region.

It is a joint venture between the Wales Screen Commission and Tourism Partnership North Wales.

The map is being launched on Monday at one of the region's most famous television filming locations, Portmeirion, where the cult classic The Prisoner was set.

The town is also celebrating its 80th birthday the same day.

The hills of north Wales have doubled as settings for locations from around the world on many occasions.

They have played China on at least two occasions, recently in the Tomb Raider sequel starring Angelina Jolie, who spent time filming in the area in 2002, and in the 1958 Ingrid Bergmann film Inn of the Sixth Happiness.

Jolie returned to the Welsh hills the following year to film The Fever with Vanessa Redgrave, when the landscape was standing in for eastern Europe.

It also popped up in the James Bond film The World Is Not Enough.

'Celebrity culture'

Scenes from the BBC series Casanova was filmed in Chirk Castle and some north Wales castles have been used for two Bollywood films.

The film Hilary and Jackie was filmed in Cilcain, near Mold and a film about the Beatles, Backbeat, was filmed on Talacre Beach near Prestatyn.

Carole Startin from Tourism Partnership North Wales said: "North Wales has played host to a wonderfully eclectic mix of films, and the Hollywood stardust has been sprinkled generously throughout the region.
