U.S. 280 crash victim is wife of former Birmingham city councilman

The wife of former Birmingham City Councilman Dr. Jimmy Blake was killed this morning when a car crossed the median on U.S. 280 and collided with her vehicle, authorities said.

Mary Anne Blake, 60, was pronounced dead at UAB Hospital at 7:18 a.m., said Jefferson County Chief Deputy Coroner Pat Curry. The accident injured two others and stalled traffic for several hours. An Auburn University student en route to Auburn was traveling on the eastbound side of the highway in her Chevrolet Cobalt when she crossed the median and collided with Mary Anne Blake's Toyota Avalon, said Curry and Mountain Brook Police Chief Johnny Stanley.

Mary Anne Blake, on her way to work at Brookwood Medical Center, was driving on the westbound side of 280 near the Overton Road intersection.

Another person in the car with her was injured as was the driver of the car that crossed the median, Stanley said. The other motorists have not been identified.

One of the injured was taken to UAB Hospital, the other to St. Vincent's Hospital, Stanley said.

Stanley said he did not know the extent of their injuries. "I know they were serious, but I'm not sure how serious," Stanley said.

Bill Ricker, a friend of the Blakes and a Birmingham City Council aide, said he spoke with the former councilman this morning.

"I don't think everything has sunk in yet," Ricker said. "All he said was that he was going to be with his grandchildren."
