The Road Transport and Safety Agency working with the Lusaka City Council has started the placement of revised speed limits on selected roads in Lusaka following concerns raised by stakeholders.
This follows the conclusion of the review process of speed limits by the committee constituted by the Agency to undertake the exercise.
The adjustment for selected roads is from 40 KM/H to 60 KM/H, 60 KM/H to 80KM/H and 80 KM/H to 100 KM/H.
RTSA Head of Public Relations Fredrick Mubanga said the process of installing the revised speed limits is underway beginning with Great East Road.
Mr Mubanga said the exercise will be rolled out to all the highways and the rest of the Provinces once resources are made available.
He has advised motorists to be cautious on the road and follow appropriate speed limits to avoid road traffic accidents.
For a change this makes a lot of sense.
The speed limits were rediclously low shaming the car manufactures and resulting in road traffic congestion.
The next step is to fine those deliberately going at lower than the specified speeds for delaying others. The dominal effect is loss of thousands and thousands man hours.

Welcome move but at times the speed changes are placed too cloose to each other;why allow 80km/hr,with a sign of a speed camera and barely a kilometer scale down to 60km/hrs and immediately after put the actual speed camera to trap those changing down from 80km/hr before they can achieve 60km/hr?! While we acknowledge that we need to observe speed limits and the measures put in place are welcome and could be bearing fruits,RTSA should move focus from fund raising antics and implement genuine law enforcement!!

Yes it’s long overdue. Great East Road is a highway. Speed limit cannot be 60
This is over due. Many thanks. Immediate attention should now be directed at dealing with contravention of traffic regulations at ROAD junctions which ends with everyone blocked. Putting cameras at selected road junctions can sort this out by fining any one contravening the traffic regulations
Now to get the drivers to not do 40 to 60 in a 80 zone…..
In Chipata the normal speed on an average road is 80kph while highways it’s at 120kph. Kapiri Mposhi has only 1 good road then you decide to hide the 40kph sign post at Pep store in town then you put a camera 2 km away as you get out of town, isn’t that madness? No, it’s beyond madness. And you expect people to pay K300 for driving at 50kph as they leave Kapiri? Zambia is full of people holding high offices but can’t think
On highways including airport road the speed limit is supposed to be 120km/h.
Surely, it had to take complaints from Public to see sense. Ndola to Kitwe Highway 60km .
This country is one of the poorest in Africa.am surprised to see people so relaxed by moving so slow as if they have the whole time and riches while rich countries are trying to move as fast as possible due to lack of time.what is wrong with poor people.
