Microsoft will close the Wilsonville plant where it built its giant touch-screen computer, the Surface Hub.
In a Tuesday letter to the state, the company said the closure will eliminate 61 jobs effective Sept. 8, with 63 additional layoffs in the following months.
The Surface Hub emerged from a company Microsoft purchased in 2012, Perceptive Pixel, which had its engineering team in Wilsonville to capitalize on Oregon's legacy cluster of electronic display companies, The Oregonian/OregonLive reported in 2016. InFocus' former headquarters were just across the freeway from the Microsoft facility.
Tuesday's announcement comes days after Microsoft acknowledged plans to eliminate up to 3,000 jobs throughout its global operations, mostly in the company's sales group, as it pivots to focus more on cloud computing.
