The man who led the City of Humboldt through the grief following the Humboldt Broncos bus tragedy in 2018 has decided against another term as mayor.
Mayor Rob Muench announced the decision Wednesday on Facebook with a short message ahead of the next municipal election on Nov. 9.
“This was not an easy decision but feel it is the right one at this time in my life” the post says. “It was an honour and a privilege to represent the citizens of Humboldt for 14 years on council with the last four as mayor.”
Muench adds that he’s proud of the work he accomplished as mayor and expresses gratitude for the support the community received in the wake of the Broncos Bus crash on April 6, 2018 in which 16 people lost their lives.
“This will not be forgotten,” Muench adds.
The Broncos bus was carrying the team to a Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League playoff game when it was hit by a semi. In addition to the 16 killed, another 13 were injured.
The tragedy prompted a national outpouring of grief.
Humboldt is a city of about 7,200 people about 100 kilometres east of Saskatoon.
