Guardians of The Lambsfoot!

I got my first lambsfoot in the mail, through the generous efforts of Jack.
What a disappointment in the USPS. 2 knives were shipped and I only got 1. The packing was torn apart and the knife I did get has been smashed. How this damage occurred I could not even guess.
I would like to again thank Jack for generous efforts to spread these knives among us.

I'm sure neither of us have stopped thinking about it all day :( How could they be so careless with a high value 'Priority' package?! I'm so sorry for you my friend, I know how much you had been looking forward to receiving your first Lambsfoot knives :(

I ordered a horn handled knife that showed up not as well put together as I would have liked, but I knew previous discussion from this thread about folks culling through knives in person to find good examples. With that in mind, I wouldn't have been disappointed, except for the bends in the knife. The handle was bent in one direction and the blade in the opposite direction, such that it actually had blade rub against one liner in the middle of the blade and the opposite liner at the tip. I didn't care about the blade rub, but the blade curvature means that I would never be able to sharpen it on a flat bench stone.

That's an interesting picture. Now I wonder if my experience with a horn handled lambsfoot was partly a shipping issue rather than an A. Wright quality issue. My packaging was intact, but it was just a simple padded envelope which could susceptible to being smashed.

Nice. Congrats.

Maybe as a secret recognition sign we could wear headgear like Cleese wore as Tim the Enchanter in Holy Grail.

"Where? Behind the rabbit?
"It IS the rabbit!!!"

If they would have only been carrying their lambsfoots (lambsfeet?) They wouldn't have had to waste the holy hand grenade of Antioch.

Reading through your original post again Archie, it does sound like the knife might have been damaged in the mail. Did you take any pics of the knife when it arrived? I guess, if someone stood on it, or ran over the envelope with a cart, it could have been damaged. @Slim278 emailed me photos of the one knife he received, and it looks like it has been run-over by a vehicle, the liner is bent, and the blade has been pushed into the liner opposite. As the liner has been bent inwards the horn has separated from the liner. I think it'd take quite a bit of force to cause the damage, and in this case the knife was wrapped in several layers of bubble-wrap, sealed in a Jiffy bag, and then that was sealed inside another Jiffy bag. That's how I usually ship knives, and how I shipped all the Guardians knives last year. Maybe I will have to look at some other packaging for this year's, but that would be more expensive. Of course, in the case of Slim's knife, it may not have been in the envelope when it was damaged, because the ripped-open packaging was delivered empty, with the Post Master subsequently finding the knife in the bottom of the mail-cart. Guardians Lambsfoot aside, I don't think I will be picking up any knives from the factory for a while, it's too much of a headache :(

Edit - Here's the 'before' pic of the damaged/ruined knife, such a shame :(

What? You mean you guys haven't been wearing your guardian headgear? I'm the only one?

Does my flat-cap count?

I'm sorry to hear about the shipping problems. :( Most of the time, things go fine, but it's always a risk.
When I package things up, I try to visualize the journey.

Howdy Guardians
While searching for Wright's contact info I was pleased to find that they posted a pic of my Guardian's knife on their Facebook page. :)

Oh yeah! :) I don't have a Facebook account, so have very limited access, but could see one of GT's pics too. A shame they're not credited. The Facebook page is actually run by someone from The Famous Sheffield Shop

Good point!

I’m convinced the USPS is out to get me or my packages. I feel like the end of season 2 of the show “The Detour.”

Mine has been in transit to my city/town for 4 days.

I checked a pile of tracking numbers today, and most seemed to be just parked up at Kennedy  The 'tracking' is a rip-off I think, since it's so vague o_O

The only trouble I've had with USPS (Knock on Wood) was the time the locals scanned Jack's return address instead my destination address and sent it back to Yorkshire.
Maybe I owe a cock to Ben Franklin. Rooster, that is.

They once sent an incoming package of mine via Australia!

Jack Black Jack Black - A fine Midnight Special Lambsfoot and pocket slip showed up here in Central New York yesterday. Thanks, Jack! It's a wonderful knife and I'll treasure it! A very nice slip too, Pàdruig Pàdruig ! I'm happy to be a member of the "Guardians of The Lambsfoot"!
I appreciate the postcard and pin too.
My wife wants to know if the Guardians are a secret society? I told I couldn't tell her and if I did I'd have to take her out to dinner!
Thanks again, my friend!

Gary, that is absolutely fantastic! Welcome to the Guardians (officially)! You got yourself quite the looker there in that Midnight Special, I hope you enjoy it.

Despondent this morning because of the news that two beautiful horn Lambsfoot knives, sent to a member here, were damaged in the post by the USPS :(

This is some rather somber news and I am rather sorry to hear it. I recently had a fountain pen sent to me from someone on the East coast and not only was the package delayed but when I received it, I could see the tire treads on the envelope from where it had been run over! Despite the heavy envelope being torn up with a high risk of having the pen fall through, the pen was actually none the worse for wear and for that, I was quite relieved.
Doesn't really salve the wound any but it is just another example of where the Postal Service can go wrong. I was just in my local Post Office a little while ago shipping a package off when a gentleman came in and loudly demanded to be able to file/list a complaint against his letter carrier, apparently they got into some sort of altercation...

Regardless, it is an enormous shame to see such a beautiful knife end up in such a sorry state. New knife days are supposed to be joyous and awesome, not rife with disappointment...

That's shocking Dylan, I'm glad you got your fountain pen at least

Yes indeed, the Lambsfoot in golden oxhorn, which never made it, was a lovely knife too. So sad that a craftsman made it, only for it to be lost so carelessly by the service being paid to deliver it :(

Lovely, as ever, Jack.......am very looking forward to the guys getting round to doing my order..!

no stranger to that, had a watch sit in jfk at fed ex's terminal and they "Attempted" delivery "3 times" what a headache

These horrible depressing tales of packages getting damaged or even run over by van tyres! Thankfully rare and I don't think any kind of packaging short of a steel box could protect against such damage:eek: Bubble wrap and strong padded envelopes have always served me well, better than USPS boxes which stuff can rattle about in.

Still, worries me as I've sent Ron something in the post but no show yet..:(

On the other hand, my day turned better, crap at work as often the case and these intolerable pipe renovations in my town flat leaves me a dust filed corner to cower in..:D But, load of post where the doormat used to be....books, magazines and a jiffy bag from a shop in Sheffield...no tyre marks on this and very rapid delivery from Britain (Royal Mail like Finland's Posti is a lot better than all these couriers in my experience) Inside, a VERY TIDY Sambar Stag Swayback L-foot:cool: Can't take any pix now as it's dark (plus the mess at home...) but a quick assessment: decent thick Sambar slabs of equal width and this gives a small single blade a great presence in the hand, strong pull and satisfying snap, blade centre, liners and Stag well finished and smooth, no blade play, spring flush on open. Any negs? Not much, the spring is not flush when the knife is closed but that's no bother, gap or two but nothing horrid, pins are kind of burred over but smooth and the spring is not cleanly cut-off. however, these are minor finish aspects and certainly nothing to brood over. Blade is straight (unlike some previous Wrights..)and no cant either. Extremely pleased indeed and now I'm really satisfied.

Thanks, Will

Your new Lambsfoot sounds good Will, I'm sure I'm not alone in looking forward to seeing it :) I have a new one to show off myself, plus a very interesting visitor, but photos of those will have to wait until tomorrow too. In the meantime, here's my Guardians Lambsfoot out in Yorkshire today ;)
