The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) is alerting motorists of various off-ramp closures along I-80 in Placer County, as part of a $1.06 million project to prevent wrong-way drivers.

Construction crews will close seven off-ramps intermittently next week from 7:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m. Sunday to Thursday. Crews are water blasting and removing the old striping. Once complete they will return with new striping and add enhanced reflective markers designed to alert motorists when traveling the wrong direction.

The I-80 off-ramps scheduled for closure are:

  • Eastbound I-80 at Atlantic Street/Taylor Road, Sierra College Boulevard and Applegate Road.
  • Westbound I-80 at South Auburn Street, Applegate Road, State Route 49 and Sierra College Boulevard.

Roadside changeable message signs will be in place along I-80 to alert motorists of the closures and the available detour. The work is part of Caltrans’ campaign to expand and upgrade roadway countermeasures to combat wrong-way drivers.

A total of 53 off-ramps along I-80 between Roseville and Colfax will receive these improvements. Two additional off-ramps are also included along State Route 65 near Olivehurst and Lincoln. Central Striping Service is the prime contractor for the project, which is expected to be completed this fall.
