George Harrison’s legendary 1970 single My Sweet lord has been revealed as Apple Records’ most played track of this century.
Taken from Harrison’s debut solo album All Things Must Pass, the track sits at the top of a list of the 20 most played tracks from the record label compiled by PPL in honour of Apple Records’ 50th anniversary.
Apple records was founded in 1968 by The Beatles and released its first single, Hey Jude, on August 30th of the same year.
My Sweet Lord was a UK Number One when it was released just under 50 years ago, it returned to the UK charts for its second appearance at Number One in 2002 following Harrison’s untimely death in 2001.
The track has received more total airplay than any of The Beatles’ singles release on Apple Records, including Hey Jude, which sits at number three on PPL's Top 20 and Let It Be, which came in at number four.
The only non-Beatles releases to feature in PPL’s Top 20 are Mary Hopkin for her Paul McCartney produced 1968 UK Number One Those Were the Days and Badfinger with No Matter What.
Peter Leathem, chief executive officer at PPL said: ‘Apple Records has released some of the most popular recordings of the past 50 years across such an eclectic range of music. It’s not just the pop-orientated material in its catalogue - the label’s releases also include Indian classical music, soundtracks, modern jazz, electronic avant-garde, brass band and even French language Cajun music.
‘The fact that Beatles tracks make up over half of the top twenty - one of which, ‘Revolution’ was a B-side and three of which are originally album tracks - is testament to the sheer quantity of The Beatles’ repertoire and also their ongoing popularity. It is also a timely reminder, with National Album Week approaching, of the power of the album.’
