Quadruple amputee veteran will soon build 'smart home'
After years of waiting, Navy veteran and Iowa native Taylor Morris can start building his house. Morris lost portions of all four of his limbs in an IED explosion while serving in Afghanistan in 2012. Since coming home, he's been trying to get approval for a smart home in Cedar Falls for him and his, wife, Danielle. Last year, the Cedar Falls City Council rejected a rezoning request from the pair. Morris wanted to rezone land off North Union Road near American Martyrs Retreat House from agricultural to residential. The Waterloo Cedar Falls Courier reported that the couple has since taken the city council's advice -- building on a site with a larger lot size without seeking rezoning. The Morrises hope to begin construction on the iPad-operated home later this summer. The Gary Sinise Foundation purchased the land and will eventually turn over the title to the Morrises. Sinise played amputee veteran Lt. Dan in the Oscar-winning movie “Forrest Gump.” The foundation raised money with a massive effort that included an August 2013 performance by the actor’s band at Gateway Park.
