10 new deaths due to COVID-19 reported in Escambia and Santa Rosa; total deaths at 219

The Florida Department of Health on Tuesday reported 10 new deaths associated with the coronavirus in Escambia and Santa Rosa counties, raising the cumulative deaths in the two counties to 219.

Escambia County reported seven new deaths Tuesday to reach a total of 169, including 159 state residents and 10 non-Florida residents. The youngest of those newly reported deaths was a 41-year-old woman. The oldest was an 88-year-old woman.

Three new deaths in Santa Rosa County — ranging in age from 69 to 79 — were recorded Tuesday to raise the cumulative total to 50.

Of all deaths in both counties, 91 are tied to long-term care centers, including 82 in Escambia County and nine in Santa Rosa County.

Also on Tuesday, the state confirmed 88 new coronavirus cases in Escambia County, growing the cumulative total to 10,405, according to the latest report from the Florida Department of Health. Santa Rosa County added 27 new COVID-19 cases to its total, which is now at 4,264.

Due to delays in reporting, figures from the state's daily report do not necessarily reflect when a person died or became infected with the virus, but rather when their case was reported by the state.

The median age of positive coronavirus cases was 39 in Escambia County and 40 in Santa Rosa County as of Tuesday.

To date, 13% of the 73,210 peopled tested in Escambia County and 14% of the 30,202 people tested in Santa Rosa County have been positive for COVID-19.

Hospitalizations due to COVID-19 in Escambia and Santa Rosa counties

The number of patients with COVID-19 being treated in Escambia County hospitals Monday was 171, continuing the downward trend in hospitalizations seen over the last week. Tuesday's count has yet to be released.

The number of COVID-19 hospitalizations increased drastically in July, reaching a peak of 246 on July 20. Over the last week, the numbers have started to decreased since a spike to 207 on Aug. 11.

Daily hospitalizations are reported from Ascension Sacred Heart, Baptist and West Florida hospitals directly to Escambia County and the city of Pensacola.

The state reported Tuesday that Escambia County's cumulative hospitalizations — how many COVID-19 patients have been hospitalized since the start of the pandemic — was 646.

The number of currently hospitalized COVID-19 patients in Santa Rosa County is not being compiled. Data from the Florida Department of Health shows that as of Tuesday, a cumulative 229 people with COVID-19 have been hospitalized in Santa Rosa County since the pandemic began. 

Escambia County on Tuesday morning had 431 available hospital beds, and Santa Rosa County had 206, according to the Florida Agency for Health Care Administration.

Of the 147 adult ICU beds in Escambia County, 21 were available, and 14 of Santa Rosa County's 21 adult ICU beds were open.

Florida adds 219 additional COVID-19 deaths and 3,838 new cases

The Florida Department of Health verified 219 additional COVID-19 deaths and 3,838 new cases Tuesday.

That marks the 10th day that more than 200 deaths have been reported, all of which have occurred since July 29. In August, 2,915 people have died of COVID-19 complications.

The seven-day average for reported COVID-19 deaths in Florida was 172 Tuesday. Statewide, 9,758 people have died since the pandemic began.

On Tuesday, the cumulative number of cases in Florida increased to 579,932. The state has recorded three consecutive days with less than 4,000 new cases, the first time that has happened since June 21-23.  

Tuesday marked the 23rd straight day the state reported fewer than 10,000 new cases. Florida's seven-day average for new cases dropped to 5,306 Tuesday. The state's cumulative positivity rate for overall tests remained at 13.53%. 

Statewide, testing continued its recent slowdown. On Monday, the state reported a total of 56,884 tests, the third consecutive day with less than 60,000. That hasn't happened since June 28-30.

The number of Florida residents hospitalized with COVID-19 is 34,695 since the pandemic began. The Department of Health notes the total figure is cumulative and does not reflect the number of COVID-19 patients currently in hospitals.
