This special report explores the relative costs and environmental benefits of introducing electric Refuse Collection Vehicles (RCVs) as a replacement for the current standard diesel option.

Our researchers found that, as the cost differential between diesel and electric RCVs is now marginal, there is a strong case for introducing eRCVs more widely.

The report details a like-for-like comparison of replacing a diesel RCV with an electric RCV, modelling the costs associated with the switch, the environmental impact, and the barriers standing in the way of making the change.

This analysis is one of the first of its kind, drawing from eRCV trials around the globe. Alongside analysisng the environmental impact of eRCVs, researchers also considered:

  • Capital funding;
  • Infrastructure requirements;
  • Vehicle Mileage;
  • Tax benefits;
  • Timescale;
  • Electricity contracts;
  • Vehicle lifetime; and,
  • Other barriers and benefits.

The report also includes a series of FAQs on electric RCVs and their viability as a procurement option.
