Minister of Health Dr. Chitalu Chilufya has said that Government would engage stakeholders to help take care of the welfare of Bupe and Mapulo who were born as co-joined twins and separated at the University Teaching Hospital (UTH) in what a lot of people described as Zambia’s landing on the moon in the field of medicine.

Speaking when he visited the twins, who are in the care of of Health personnel at Kawambwa distinct hospital, together with Luapula Province Minister, Nickson Chilangwa, Dr Chilufya said that the PF government took welfare of children very seriously and that Mapalo and Bupe where no exception.

The Health Minister promised that, with help of stakeholders that they would engage, the Children’s welfare would be taken care of.

Dr Chilufya further said that that government would not be reckless with the welfare of the twins whose landmark separation had been conducted by Zambian Doctors and had put the nations health sector on the map, adding that Zambian laws had the welfare of Children adequately covered in them.

The beautiful 1 year 7 months old babies have been allegedly abandoned by their parents and are in the care of Health personnel at Kawambwa distinct hospital. Dr Chilufya took time to visit the the children who were first brought to the hospital severely malnourished and with a bout of Malaria.

Luapula Province Minister, Nickson Chilangwa thanked the Health Minister for his visit to the twins, to check on them and further thanked the medical team at Kawambwa district hospital for doing a tremendous job of ensuring that the children are looked after properly.

Last month, Government reaffirmed its commitment to supporting the former conjoined twins Bupe and Mapalo, following reports of alleged negligence by the twins’ parents leading to the infants becoming malnourished.

Luapula province minister Nixon Chilangwa said that government through his office was still committed to supporting and ensuring that the welfare of the twins is attended to, amicably.

Expressing his disappointment at the time with the ailing twins’ parents absence when he visited them at the hospital, Mr. Chilangwa said time had come for government to take full responsibility of the infants.

He said that the former co-joined twins had become a national asset as government invested a lot of resources in the landmark and historic surgical separation of the former conjoined twins at the University Teaching Hospital this year , hence the need to take custody of the children.

Kawambwa District Medical Director Arthur Mataka revealed that apart from malaria the twins had, they were also suffering from malnutrition adding that the hospital was working on improving their nutrition levels.

Dr. Mataka also expressed concern at the long distance between the hospital and the twins’ home as it had become increasingly difficult for medical staff to regularly check on the twins.

    • I doubt this political insinuation by PF top cadres that the parents of those two kids have abandoned them. How does parents’struggles to make ends meet under PF cruel regime translate into child neglect? Why have the parents not been allowed to tell their side of the story? PF deception and lies are short lived. The truth will soon be come to light. I just pray the move is not political because PF is really desperate for headlines.

I strongly believe these parents love their kids and are even heart broken to be portrayed as negligent by these corrupt and thieving PF thugs.

Instead of treating this family like this, the PF should empower such parents or help them out through social cash transfer if all the money has not been stolen again.

      Why is everything stakeholder’s…

Why is everything stakeholder’s responsibility instead of Lungu and PF’s. The PF has the capacity to empower thugs who cause violence , why not this poor family?

I think someone has hatched a plan to set up a fund to cash in, on the plight of this poor family. How shameful! There are so many disabled kids out there being neglected by the PF regime after using them to solicit donations which then Lungu and his PF thugs steal.

PF ni ba chimbwi no plan.

    • Sounds like child trafficking. Twins have been institutionalized. They know the parents. Parents might have been paid off by PF government so it can own “landmark” twins.

    • Wanzelu: we are told the father to the kids was offer a job but government and he refused and told them was comfortable with piece works, ukulima. Am sure he is not ready to wait until month end for him to have the money.

    • This is good , god bless the twins and finally we see humility and civilty by the minister by not say it is

” the directive from president lungu ”

It is a directive from Zambian tax payers, well done.

LT Editor, look at this profanity above.. this is what people complained about ..this is not commenting but blatant insults by kids who are too immature for your website!!

Teacher teacher they are laughing at me. Under 5 cry baby Gay Jay

  2. Rather than taking away the kids from the parents, I think government, in the first instance should look at how it can empower the parents of the twins economically or some form of livelihood….and not just charity. This will allow the twins to also grow up with dignity in a normal family as opposed to being the wards of the state and surviving on charity. Someone has to have legal custody to ensure the welfare of the kids and not just a government department or officer. That is unsustainable in the long run.

    • @Blabla
Yours is the best contribution/suggestion on this subject matter !! If the government wants the best for these kids, they should get and implement your suggestion.

  3. The issue of these children is being used for political gain . Is it pf government or social services who will ensure safety and care for them? Equip the parents with supportive incentives, rather than taking away the children.

  4. Firstly the ministry for taking time to look at the twins , secondly I must commend the health minister for not politicking and mentioning presidential directive to look after the twins….

    God bless Zambia.

  5. Has the parents to those twins stopped mating….coz I understand there’s a Chola already….so how is Chola???should be malnourished too….such people should not produce mwebantu….they can meet but there are contraceptives please…though I understand bashi Mapalo was against it no wonder the Chola…..if I had powers I can jail the Father to those kids for negligence…..

  6. The whole minister always holding kids…instead formulating policies to avoid such..this is no different to the lazy bum who is always sweeping streets.

  7. I thought the kids were adopted by first lady. Now minister want stakeholders to donate to his pocket. Eeeiiiiissshhhh!!!!!
    Disaster!

  8. Who are the stakeholders? Are they not the parents? Why is the MOH behaving as if they are a social service? Don’t we have a ministry responsible social issues or matters? Please help the parents to look after those children. They are not the only parents struggling to make ends meet. This is a reflection of the majority of rural communities throughout the country.

  9. I have read the comments from some people. We should know that these twins are not ordinary twins. They are special and will always occupy a special place in the history of Lusaka’s UTH, in that they were the first Siamese twins to be separated successfully at the highest medical institution in our country. So it is indeed gratifying to note that the government has taken keen interest in their welfare. Let’s give credit where it is due

  10. lam not rich but I can look after those twins, l have been married for 10yrs no kids, how could a normal mother abandon kids like that.

  11. The same mouth that seems to care in kawambwa rashes to suspend a male ZEN at a health centre in Kalomo without following due public service process.A nurse is publicly filmed and harassed due to his mother tongue. This minister went ahead and confirmed his suspension without any prior investigation.Posterity will show that this man has executed a very extensive tribal agenda that will left a major dent on the cohesion of the Zambian people.
