Writing a cross between Romantic Suspense and Cozy Mystery, Jane Drager follows one cardinal rule—weakness is not an option. Her heroines are strong-willed, independent, and comfortable in their own skin. Throw them into a mystery, add a man to get hormones jumping, and watch the fireworks fly.

Jane likes to keep the sex scenes to a minimum, focusing instead on the mystery that draws the two main characters together. Every novel has a happily-ever-after or a happy-for-now ending because—let's face it—the world is full of stress, and books are a great way to relax.

If you’re a reader of my past reviews you already know that I have a thing for (small town) sheriffs. I blame reruns of The Andy Griffin Show. Please check out an episode and check out how Andy wears his uniform and then, let’s talk. Do you see what I see? Okay—maybe not!

Anyway ...

Carmen, a pediatrician by trade, arrives in a small town for rest and relaxation and her first encounter is with a local Sheriff named James. There's a mutual (unwanted) attraction and they both have reasons to ignore the spark. Carmen fears law enforcement because so many have been bought by her ex-husband and James doesn't want to feel anything for a stranger he doesn't know and who will be leaving in two weeks.

The Universe conspires to throw these two together under unique circumstances. James is a single dad and quite a catch, only no resident or ever-visiting tourists has been able to capture his interest, until now. When Carmen's stalker ex-husband follows her to town—despite a restraining order—things get interesting when he arrogantly reveals his agenda to the sheriff.

Over a matter of days, the women in town rally around Carmen preventing her ex from getting as close as he'd like. As for James, he struggles with his attraction to her and the agenda her ex has revealed. His gut tells him one thing, that is to trust Carmen, but the story that Carmen's ex spins gets under his skin and makes him doubt Carmen and himself.

James' backstory is revealed and it was a interesting surprise. I did not for one second believe that James would be able to evade a single woman on a mission to "get (him) James" for the last nine years. Clearly, no woman had been up to the task. Nope—I couldn't ride that train.

SEMI-SPOILERS AHEAD

The pivotal moment is revealed and James' actions upon arrival and thereafter are egregious! He attempts to piece together the clues and he's all wrong! Since he's semi-involved with Carmen, he does the right thing, and removes himself from the case and hands it over to his deputy. He makes it clear to his deputy that he wants evidence to prove Carmen's innocence.

In fact, his deputy and others tell him he's way off-base but he refuses to listen and he refuses to look at ALL the pieces, from every angle. He is singularly focused on proving her Why this author thought this was a good idea—I do not know! It firmly places the hero in the role of a big douche and I'm being kind.

Truth be told, I didn't like James, he was extremely judgmental and narrow-minded when it came to Carmen. His actions are so shocking, there is just no coming back from it, particularly since it's the day after he slept with Carmen. I know what the author was trying to say about James' character as a member of law enforcement, but his actions makes him a jerk, not a hero. He needed to be torn between and he was firmly on the side

How does a story recover from such heinous actions? It doesn't in my eyes and how this heroine could even think of getting past this is mind-blowing to me. Because for me, there just ain't no way.

Read It! Your opinion my differ.

When Doctor Carmen Santiago takes a vacation in the mountains she hopes for peace and time away from her abusive ex, Enrico, who continues to stalk her. Her first meeting with Sheriff James Thomas is not what she expected. Can she trust him or will her ex be able to pay him off as well? James is not ready for his reaction and attraction to Carmen. She seems to fit in to the laid-back atmosphere of the people and the town and she finds James’ young daughter, Lucy, a delight. She knew it was too good to be true when her ex shows up flashing his money and earning the disgust of the entire town. He has plans for her to have an accident which will set him up nicely with the money from her life insurance. When Enrico’s threats target James and his daughter, she knows it is time to leave, but Enrico has no intention of letting her leave alive. Although I think it took James too long to believe in Carmen, I enjoyed the story line and the characters, especially Lucy and her desire for a mother. I received an advance review copy at no cost and without obligation for an honest review. (paytonpuppy)

My first book by Jane Drager. Carmen just wants to get some peace away from her psychotic ex. James is drawn to her, but is really suspicious. Almost too suspicious. I really liked these characters, and the chemistry was good. I’m not sure I believe that her ex would be so bold, but it worked out in the end.
