Ahead of a new school year that could see students never stepping into a classroom, Microsoft is bringing Minecraft: Education Edition to Chromebooks.

The Chrome OS version of Minecraft: Education Edition will support cross-platform play between the Windows, iPad and Mac versions of the game, meaning students will have the chance to socialize and collaborate on projects no matter what device they're using. Microsoft is also updating the game to include 11 new STEM lessons and a Minecraft world to teach students about bees and pollination. The update also comes with an updated lesson plan library and tagged capabilities.

According to the company, Chrome OS, iPad, and Windows devices will automatically install the update. Mac users will have to download the update manually. Schools with Minecraft: Education Edition installed in their classrooms will not have to alter their subscription. The company will also add the Chrome OS version of Microsoft 365 Education A3 and A5 licenses.

Minecraft: Education Edition is available since. It's not unusual that it's only been made available to Chromebooks this year. Google's computing platform is the dominant one in the education market. As of 2019 Google reported that there were 30 million Chromebooks used in schools globally. In 2018, Chromebooks represented 60 percent of all laptops and tablets used in classrooms for K-12 students in the US. This release also provides Chrome OS users an official method to install Minecraft without the need to sideload the game onto their device.
