Activist Davinder Singh’s murder: The questions that remain unanswered

CHANDIGARH, Punjab—On March 27, three unruly youths including son of a police cop had shot at Sikh activist Davinder Singh in Kale village which comes under the Chheharta police station. On March 31, he succumbed to injuries at a private hospital in Amritsar.

Available information reveals that Davinder Singh was trying to convince one of these youths named Lovepreet Singh AKA Love who was forcing a grocery shop owner to open his shop despite curfew imposition.

Later, this youth came back with another two youths named Sarabjit Singh alias Saba and Sashi. The trio youths first pelted stones at the shop and then opened fire on the Sikh activist Davinder Singh who was standing outside his home. The bullet pierced into the hip of Davinder Singh due to which he was immediately rushed to a private hospital in Amritsar.

The trio youths openly brandished the pistols and opened two fires after shooting Davinder Singh.

An FIR in this regard was lodged the same day under section 307 of IPC (attempt to murder) and now section 302 (Murder) has also been added after the death of Davinder Singh on March 31.

The police have arrested trio youths and an investigation is being carried out by the police.

An illegal .32 bore pistol has been recovered from Sarabjit Singh AKA Saba, which was used in this murder.

Sarabjit Singh alias Saba, who had shot at Davinder Singh, is the son of an Assistant Sub-Inspector Kuldeep Singh, who is serving in the Jhander police station in Amritsar.

After this murder, there are questions that need to be answered:

  1. From where did the son of an ASI rank police official procure this illegal .32 bore pistol?
  2. Was the ASI aware of the possession of an illegal pistol by his son?

Whatsoever comes out in the investigation, this incident has made one thing clear that not only police cops, but also their kin consider themselves to be an ultimate decision-maker in the society of Punjab and they don’t feel any fear while violating the law that they are meant to protect.

Davinder Singh was an active member of the Khalra Mission Organization. He was working with KMO in collecting evidence about the Sikh youths killed by police in fake encounters.

In 2019’s parliamentary elections, he had actively campaigned for Bibi Paramjit Kaur Khalra in Khadoor Sahib parliamentary constituency.

Press Note by Khalra Mission Organization
