Leeds man accused of robbing handicapped woman in Birmingham

A Leeds man was arrested today in connection with a robbery of a handicapped woman in Birmingham Friday morning, police announced.

Anthony Ray Armstrong is charged with two counts of third-degree robbery for allegedy hitting a woman with his car door before stealing her purse. Witnesses were able to give police a description of the vehicle Armstrong was reportedly in as it fled the scene. With the assistance of the Leeds Police Department and St. Clair County Sheriff's Office, Birmingham police were able to locate and apprehend Armstrong at a home in St. Clair County.

"As police officers, we have soft spots when it comes to certain members of our populace," Birmingham Police Sgt. Bryan Shelton said in a release. "We were determined to find out who did this crime, and bring them to justice. We are grateful for the helped received from partner agencies and the citizens who saw what happened. This is an example of a community of neighbors working together."

The victim wasn't injured in the incident.

Armstrong, who police say has a history of theft charges, is being held in the Jefferson County Jail on a $60,000 bond.
