A wheelchair user was left in tears after being "refused" service at a coffee shop because she couldn't reach their card machine.

Trinity student Niamh Herbert said the incident happened last Friday in Costa Coffee on Nassau Street.

The Kildare woman claims she was especially shocked as she had complained about the issue nine months ago and nothing had been done.

The disability rights campaigner took to Twitter to express her disappointment.

She wrote: "Shocked. @CostaCoffee on Nassau/Dawson St. refused to serve me because I couldn't reach their card machine from my wheelchair.

"I was then told to move out of the queue to let other customers pay, and to take my custom elsewhere.

"I complained about this PIN machine problem NINE months ago, and they still haven't fixed it.

"Went back to Costa today and was told they haven't fixed the machine because they'd have to renovate and would be closed for 2 weeks.

"Was also asked why I can't just bring cash. Not the point, not my problem. Also, it's IMPOSSIBLE to use most city ATMs in a wheelchair."

She later told Independent.ie that she cried in the shop and felt "humiliated".

The 21-year-old said: "I feel like... it might sound silly but I feel like I was denied my rights as a consumer.

"I feel like I'm looked down on all the time because people have to literally look down on me because I'm in a wheelchair and this was just another issue."

Niamh later posted an update online saying she had a call from the head office, who apologised and promised the situation would be rectified soon.

A spokesperson for Costa told Independent.ie they are "aware of the issue".

The Irish Daily Mirror have also contacted Costa for a comment in relation to the incident.
