Thailand has imposed curfews in 23 provinces after the government ordered its military to end a six week occupation of central Bangkok by 5,000 red-shirt protestors.

The leaders of the anti-government protests surrendered after the military operation began, saying they wished to avoid more deaths.

At least five people have been killed in the latest gun battles in the Thai capital and dozens more lost their lives in recent days.

Alistair Leithead reports.
