MARTIN COUNTY — Parts of Dixie Highway will close overnight Thursday, Friday and Saturday because of repair work being done to the southbound Roosevelt Bridge.

Florida Department of Transportation officials said portions of Dixie Highway will be closed from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. Thursday through Saturday to ensure work crews are able to safely continue repairs on the Roosevelt Bridge.

FDOT has closed parts of Dixie Highway near or under the bridge multiple times.

More: Southbound Roosevelt Bridge could be open to motorists as soon as October

In June, FDOT officials found a crack in the southbound bridge. Further investigation revealed the steel tendons in the southbound bridge were corroded and needed to be repaired. After the discovery, FDOT closed both bridges and inspected them. The northbound bridge needed minor repairs and was reopened June 27 to two-way traffic.

The southbound bridge is expected to reopen in late October.

FDOT spokeswoman Beth Frady said alternate routes Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights are U.S.1 and the northbound bridge.

For vehicles over 5 tons, Frady said drivers should use Interstate 95, Florida’s Turnpike and State Road A1A.
