Samsung's 110-inch microLED TV will cost over $1000 per inch

Samsung likes to refer to its first LED TV, or microLED TV, as 'home ready' but it will cost over $150,000 dollars, according to Korean media.

Samsung's first LED TV

It is not uncommon to see new TV display technology cost $100 per inch, sometimes even a couple of hundred dollars per inch. But it is not often that we see new TV technology cost over $1000 per inch. Then again, Samsung's 110-inch microLED TV is not your typical TV. After having launched its modular 'The Wall' on the commercial and custom installer markets, the company will in early 2021 launch the world's first LED TV on the consumer market – after having marketed its LCD TVs as "LED TVs" for a decade or so. Inorganic LEDs are now small enough, hence the mini/micro moniker, to serve as pixels in a display. Samsung has confirmed to Korean media that it will start taking pre-orders later this month at 170 million won, which is roughly $155,000 US dollars.

It may cost less or more when it hits the US and Europe but it is approximately 80% more expensive than LG's 65-inch 'Rollable OLED', another exotic new TV. Apple, LG, Sony and others are also exploring microLED technology for use in displays. We are excited about the prospects of self-emitting microLED display technology. Just imagine watching the latest movie or playing the latest console game in 4K HDR on this beast. However, it is clear that it will still take several years to make it affordable – and smaller. Most recently, a report from DSCC concluded that even by 2026 microLED display technology will have a "small share of the TV market due to a high retail price". - "What’s more important now is how much value we can deliver to our customers," said Choi Yong-hoon, VP of Samsung’s Visual Display Business. "Prices are expected to fall dramatically once more players enter the market and we have a more robust market ecosystem." - Source: Pulse News, JoongAng Daily
