Key Information:
You are being asked to take part in a research study about how young children learn two languages in families that speak Spanish at home, and perhaps also English. You might participate in this study to help us understand more about bilingual language development in young children in the U.S. This page will give you key information to help you decide whether or not you want to participate in this study. WHAT IS THE PURPOSE, PROCEDURES, AND DURATION OF THIS STUDY?
The purpose of this study is to learn how young children in Spanish- or Spanish-English speaking homes learn language. In this study, you will complete online surveys to give information about your child, such as his or her age and development, and about the languages your family uses at home (20 min). You will also do a phone interview with one of our researchers to give more information about the languages your family speaks (40 min). We will make an audio recording of the interview to make sure we do not miss any important information. After that, you can choose to record a video of your child saying 10 words (10 min). You do not have to do the video recording if you do not want to. Your participation will take about 70 minutes to finish.

WHAT ARE THE REASONS YOU MIGHT CHOOSE TO VOLUNTEER FOR THIS STUDY?
You may learn about your child's language skills, and researchers will learn how to help Spanish-speaking families with young children. You will not benefit directly from this study. You will get $25 for doing this study to thank you for your time.

WHAT ARE THE REASONS YOU MIGHT NOT CHOOSE TO VOLUNTEER FOR THIS STUDY?
The main risk of the study is that we are going to keep your information for research purposes. Some of this information, such as your name and the video of your child (if you choose to provide one), is personal. Sometimes someone might see your information. To stop this from happening, we will keep your information private using a secure GWU server with passwords, and we will use a code number instead of your name. We will not use your name or your child's name in any publication or presentation that uses this data. We will destroy all identifying information after 3 years. Audio and video recordings will be maintained on our secure server for at least three years before being destroyed.

DO YOU HAVE TO TAKE PART IN THIS STUDY?
You do not have to take part in this research. It is your choice whether or not you want to take part. You can agree to take part and later change your mind. If you choose not to take part or choose to stop taking part at any time, there will be no penalty to you or loss of benefits to which you are otherwise entitled.

¿CUAL ES EL PROPOSITO, DURACION, Y LOS PASOS DE ESTE ESTUDIO?
Usted podría aprender cómo los niños/as en hogares de habla hispana o hispana-inglesa aprenden el lenguaje. En este estudio, completará encuestas por internet para dar información sobre su hijo/a, como la edad y su desarrollo, y el idioma que la familia habla en el hogar (20 min.). También participará en una entrevista por teléfono con uno de nuestros investigadores para aportar más información acerca de los idiomas que se hablan en la familia (40 min.). Nosotros grabaremos la entrevista para asegurarnos que no se pierda ningún dato importante. Luego, usted podrá elegir si desea grabar un video de su hijo/a diciendo 10 palabras (10 min.) No tiene que grabar este video si no quiere. Su participación habrá tardado como 70 minutos al finalizar.

¿POR QUE PARTICIPARIA EN ESTE ESTUDIO?
Podrá aprender las habilidades que su hijo/a tenga con el lenguaje y a su vez los investigadores aprenderán como ayudar a las familias hispanas con hijos pequeños. Usted no se beneficiará directamente de este estudio. Recibirá $25 por participar y en agradecimiento por su tiempo.

¿POR QUE NO PARTICIPARIA EN ESTE ESTUDIO?
El riesgo mayor de este estudio es que nos quedaremos con su información exclusivamente para la investigación. Algunos datos como su nombre y el video grabado de su hijo (si elige enviarlo) son personales. Es posible que alguien vea su información. Para que ésta no sea vista por las personas equivocadas, sólo usaremos un servidor seguro de GWU con contraseñas, y en lugar del nombre de su hijo/a usaremos números codificados en publicaciones o presentaciones que requieran información de este estudio. Borraremos toda la información personal luego de 3 años. Grabaciones de voz y video serán guardadas en nuestro servidor seguro por lo menos por 3 años antes de ser destruídas.

¿ES OBLIGACION PARTICIPAR EN ESTE ESTUDIO?
Usted no tiene que participar en este estudio. Es su decisión si quiere o no quiere participar. Puede aceptar participar y luego cambiar de opinión. Si usted elige no participar o deja de participar en cualquier momento, no habrá ninguna penalidad o pérdida de los beneficios que le corresponden.
