Handicapped 14-year-old boy killed in house fire on Detroit's east side

Mother hospitalized for smoke inhalation

DETROIT – A 14-year-old boy was killed in a fire Sunday in a Detroit home.

The Detroit Fire Department received a call at about 3:30 a.m. about the fire inside the home on Riad Street, near Kelly and Whittier roads.

The boy, who used a wheelchair, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Authorities said they believe a hot plate started the fire, which began in the boy's back bedroom, where he was found.

A family-friend said the boy's mother tried to get to him, but she was unable to because of smoke.

The 52-year-old woman was taken to a hospital for smoke inhalation. She is in critical condition. Her daughter said she believes she will survive.

The daughter, 16, was uninjured, authorities said.
