Huss heavyweight Dalton Jenkins earns runner-up finish in Holy Angels wrestling tournament

CHARLOTTE - Gaston County schools East Gaston, North Gaston, Stuart Cramer, and defending state champions Hunter Huss made up four of the 65 high schools participating in the prestigious Holy Angels prep wrestling tournament at Bojangles Arena in Charlotte over the weekend.

Hunter Huss Senior heavyweight Dalton Jenkins was the high finisher among the four local schools.

Jenkins finished runner up to defending state 3A champion and prep national champion Nick Coe of Asheboro. Coe defeated Jenkins by pin fall at 1:36 of the first period. Coe has verbally committed to play football at Auburn University next season.

"He was a better wrestler today. He's the best wrestler I've ever faced," said Jenkins.

North Gaston's Lathan Bumgarner battled back to finish third after he was disqualified for an illegal slam during his quarterfinal match. Bumgarner was leading 7-2 when the penalty was assessed, ending his tournament championship hopes. Bumgarner defeated of Mason Flynt of Ledford High School 3-0 to secure his third place finish.

Other local wrestlers placed in the tournament including Huss' Keshon McClean(6th), Cramer's Jonathan Collins (6th), and two wrestlers from East Gaston, senior Tyler Spurling (5th) and Adam Poole (8th).

Hunter Huss finished in eighth place in the team standings with 130.5 points. East Gaston placed 30th with 73.0 while Stuart Cramer was 41st with 53.0 and North Gaston was 45th with 46.0 team points.
