Are flavored condoms safe?
Flavored condoms may seem gimmicky and even gross, but they’re totally safe to use...as long as you use them for their intended purpose: fellatio, or oral sex, on a penis. And while some flavored condoms (such as the ones produced by Glyde) may be safe for penetrative sex, it’s much safer to use them exclusively for oral sex—although it’s better to use a flavored condom for vaginal or anal sex than it is to use no condom at all.
So why exactly are flavored condoms usually a big no-no for penetrative sex? Because flavored condoms often contain artificial flavoring and sugar, and that sugar is a MAJOR problem for your delicate biome. As certified sexologist Gigi Engle explains, “When you use flavored condoms [for vaginal sex], your vagina is exposed to that glycerine and sugar. Sugar feeds yeast. When you throw off the balance and the yeast begins to overgrow, you get a yeast infection.” No, thx!!
Likewise, flavored lube is totally safe to use as a supplement to oral sex on a penis, but you’ll wanna be careful about using it during penetrative sex or cunnilingus, especially if you suspect it has any sugary ingredients. “Putting sugar and other chemicals in the genitals, especially inside a vagina, can compromise the pH balance and cause issues like yeast infections,” warns certified sex therapist and sexologist Jenni Skyler, PhD. Instead, you’ll wanna stick with lubes made for anal play or vagina-friendly lubes.
How to choose the best flavored condoms
K, so now that we’ve established that you should keep flavored sex stuff FAR AWAY from your vulva and anus (unless the product *specifically* states that it’s safe for use during vaginal or anal sex), here’s what you should look for in a flavored lube or condom:
Stick with well-known brands
Novelty products may seem fun (uh, remember when J&D’s Foods released those bacon-flavored condoms?), but catching an STI because you used a gag gift condom during oral sex definitely isn’t. Your genitals and mouth deserve only the best, so make sure you buy condoms from reputable condom brands, like Glyde, ONE, Trustex, and Durex (and yes, same goes for lube, ’cause you should know what you’re putting in your body).
Cut down on chemicals if you can
Again, flavored condoms and lubes oftentimes contain artificial flavoring, but you can opt for all-natural or organic ingredients if you’re hoping to get the safest (and most sustainable) option. Technically, there’s no such thing as an “organic” condom—since there isn’t an organic verifying body that certifies condoms—but you can look for Fair Trade–certified, nitrosamine-free, and vegan condoms and lubes if you’d like to cut down on chemicals.
Find the best flavor for you
Sry to be the bearer of bad news, but a chocolate condom or lube probs isn’t going to make your partner’s penis taste like a straight-up chocolate bar. However! You can decide whether you’re more into savory or sweet tastes and whether a lightly flavored or flavor-packed option is more to your liking. As Engle says, “If you want to use some flavored lube to make YOUR partner’s junk taste like pie, go for it. You essentially turn your partner’s penis into a lollipop.” Fun!
