The driver of a northbound motor home led police on a 40-mile chase from La Center to the Toutle rest stop Monday night, driving all that distance without lights on, according to the Washington State Police.
The woman then ran into freeway traffic after stopping the vehicle.
Troopers said the motor home varied its speed between 86 and 44 mph and moved across all three lanes. Although Interstate 5 traffic was light, the vehicle struck a Ford Bronco in the Kelso area and didn't slow down, troopers said. The other driver was uninjured.
With assistance from Cowlitz County sheriff's deputies and Kelso and Castle Rock police, the motor home was finally brought to a stop three miles after spike strips deflated a tire, troopers said. The driver and only occupant, Amy Renee Mason, jumped out and ran into the freeway toward oncoming traffic, with Trooper Marcus Hoggatt screaming for her to stop, troopers said.
