A CHARM

Me and Ciaran Hinds clicked straight away, says The Dry star Pom Boyd

IRISH actress Pom Boyd revealed she clicked straight away with her co-star Ciaran Hinds while working on the RTE series The Dry.

The actress plays Bernie Sheridan in the IFTA-nominated series - a mother whose daughter returns home to South Dublin after years of living and partying in London and is trying to give up drinking.

Ciaran, best known for his role as Eamon Cunningham in the hit RTE series Kin, plays her husband in the series and the actress said the pair clicked straight away.

Speaking with The Irish Sun she said: "Ciaran is such a lovely man. Everybody loves him, wherever he goes, he spreads kindness and love.

"But also just artistically, as actors, we clicked straight away.

"Because we were husband and wife you have to find that easy relationship together straightaway and we did."

Pom explained that she has known Ciaran for years as they used to mingle with the same crowds and added that it was "a charm" to work with her old friend.

She said: "We have quite a lot in common, I suppose. A lot. Both of us were around the Dublin theatre scene back in the 80s.

"And we would know similar people in that.

"So that was all a charm and just great to work with him."

The Rosie star said her character Bernie is very different from her, but she found some similarities in her motherly concerns.

She explained: "She's quite different to me, she's quite a repressed character and thankfully, she has one huge difference to me - thank God.

"She has lost a child. She's lost her adored son.

"So, she's a woman sort of stuck in a state of grief as well.

"She would be a very different person to me but I related to a lot of her motherly concerns and also, I suppose you always invest in a character with the parts of your own personality as well as part of the job.

'GREAT CHARACTER'

"But she was a great character [to play]."

The award-winning actress said she jumped at the chance to play Bernie as she rarely gets offered such exciting characters.

She said: "These days, I get sent a lot of scripts, but very few of them are meaty roles for women of my age, older women.

"They're usually the mammy, I mean I was the mammy in this case, but I wasn't just pouring the tea and having an inconsequential scene.

"So that was great."

Pom also gave a nod to the shows writer, Nancy Harris and director Paddy Breathnach.

The actress gushed: "Nancy Harris - she's a brilliant writer.

"She really gifted me this great character, and then Paddy Breathnach let me run with it as well, so that was great."
