LG 2020 4K OLED TVs with G-Sync, 48" size, Filmmaker Mode - BX, CX, GX, WX

LG has unveiled its 2020 line-up of 4K OLED TVs comprising BX, CX, GX, and WX from 48 to 77 inches. On top of HDMI 2.1, LG is adding G-Sync, FreeSync, HGiG Mode, Filmmaker Mode, an upgraded video processor, and more.

LG says that it is "bringing cinema, sports and gaming to life in new ways" with its 2020 4K OLED TVs. For the first time, LG is also bringing OLED display technology to a smaller 48-inch size (CX series). The largest 4K OLED remains the 77 inch. At CES 2020, LG unveiled the BX, CX, GX and WX ranges (X pronounced as 10). These are the successors to last year's B9, C9, E9, and W9 models.

The E series was not refreshed; in its place LG is re-introducing the G series as 'Gallery OLED', described as "a whole different level with an ultra-thin form factor – the 65-inch model is a mere 20 millimeters (0.79 inches) thin". LG has also unveiled new 8K OLED TVs.

The most affordable BX OLED TVs will feature an upgraded 'Alpha 7 Gen 3' video processor, while the CX, GX and WX models will feature the more advanced 'Alpha 9 Gen 3' processor. - "This advanced processor leverages upgraded processing power and artificial intelligence deep learning algorithms to improve on LG’s renowned picture quality and enable a host of specialized features for various types of content including movies, games and sports, taking the user experience to new heights," said LG. LG CX, which replaces C9, is now the most expansive range spanning 48 to 77 inches (48-inch seen below). - "This 4K UHD unit (model OLED48CX) reproduces even sharper picture quality with 8 million-plus pixels on the 48-inch screen, density comparable to that of a 96-inch 8K TV," the company said.

LG has a refreshed the look of its wallpaper OLED, too. WX will be available in 65 and 77-inch models that are unique due to the extremely thin design that hangs flush on the wall. The soundbar, which also includes all electronics as well as input/output ports, has been redesigned. Lastly, LG will finally launch its unique rollable OLED TV - first unveiled at last year's CES - as the RX in 2020. It is a 65-inch 4K OLED model that comes with most of the same features as the other new models.

Filmmaker Mode, HGiG Mode, Dolby Vision IQ

Filmmaker Mode, which was formally introduced last year, will make its way to LG's full line-up of high-end TVs in 2020 - from the BX to RX OLED. - "The new Filmmaker Mode, supported by Hollywood’s leading directors, delivers images the way they intended. By disabling certain post-processing effects (such as motion smoothing, noise reduction and sharpening) while perfectly preserving correct aspect ratios, colors and frame rates, LG OLED TVs with the Filmmaker Mode faithfully replicate the original vision of the director," the company explained. Last year, the UHD Alliance explained that Filmmaker Mode will be accessible via a button on the remote control or automatically through metadata. It is not clear if the latter will be supported on LG's new TVs but we are chasing more details at CES. LG is also highlighting support for Nvidia G-Sync. First introduced through an update to select 2019 OLED models, G-Sync will be supported across four 2020 model ranges (BX, CX, GX and ZX). Furthermore, the company confirmed to FlatpanelsHD that the new TVs will also support AMD FreeSync, in addition to HDMI VRR.

Another new feature this year is HGiG Mode, which was developed the HDR Gaming Interest Group comprising Sony (PlayStation), Microsoft (Xbox), and other companies. The mode was proposed after console game developers struggled to find common ground for HDR implementations in games. As such, it can be seen as a sort of standard for HDR gaming. - "In another industry-first, 2020 LG OLED TVs feature the HDR Gaming Interest Group’s HGiG Mode so gamers can enjoy high quality visuals as game creators and developers intended when playing HDR games via consoles on their LG TVs. HGiG is a body made up of companies from the game and display industries that develops standards to improve the HDR gaming experience for consumers," said LG. In addition, OLED TVs have received the 'Eye Comfort Display' certification from TÜV Rheinland as they are flicker-free (in SDR and HDR) and offer adjustability for blue light content. Why so many gaming-related features? Well, you may have heard that PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X are both coming out later this year. Like everyone else, LG wants a piece of the pie and it is positioning its new OLED TVs as the best choice for console gamers. Are they? Obviously, that will be hard to say until the next generation of game consoles come out but all of these features come on top of LG's HDMI 2.1 ports that also support 4K120 and VRR. Other features in LG's 2020 OLED TVs include Dolby Vision IQ, a further development of the Dolby Vision HDR format that ensures "optimal picture quality as the creatives intended, no matter the ambient light environment or content genre", Dolby Atmos support, and hardware-level calibration. Like LG's new 8K TVs, the new 4K OLED models will support AV1 decoding.

Disney+ and Apple TV app

The TVs come with the latest version of LG's webOS smart TV platform that recently gained a Disney+ app, in addition to Netflix, HBO, Hulu, YouTube, and others. This year, Apple and LG will roll out the Apple TV app that can be used to watch Apple TV+, iTunes movies, and Apple TV channels. The app will be available for 2020, 2019, and 2018 LG TVs. 2018 models were not part of the original announcement so LG has, at least partly, responded to the criticism. The TVs will support Apple AirPlay 2 and HomeKit, in addition to Google Assistant and Amazon Alexa. GX and up will offer hands-free voice control. LG said that it is also introducing 'Sports Alert' "to keep track of their favorite teams and schedules and notifying them as soon as a team scores". The TVs can be connected to Bluetooth speakers, which LG believes can "real stadium environment". The new OLED TVs from LG will go up against OLED TVs from Sony, Panasonic, Philips, and soon Chinese TV brands as well as high-end LCD TVs from the likes of Samsung and TCL. This year, LG is banking heavily on gaming- and cinema-related features as the next generation of game console are being prepared for launch and Hollywood is getting more involved in home entertainment as movie theatres are showing signs of fatigue. How LG's 2020 OLED stack up against competing TVs is hard to say at this time but after CES 2020 we should have a much better idea. More information will be revealed at CES 2020. FlatpanelsHD is in Las Vegas. We will add new details to this article, if we learn anything interesting.
