Review
— Katy Duncan, award-winning author of Soul Taken
"I love this book! There is excitement at every page turn. Grey is relatable because she has insecurities we all feel at 14, but she has the knowledge and wherewithal to take command of a challenging situation. Formidable!"
— Emily Auerswald, Librarian, Greenwich Country Day School
"Unfurling the Sails is Branson's first venture into Young Adult fiction, and it is an absolute triumph. The continued story of Kat Wallace and her daughter Grey Shima is a tale that will not only tug your heart strings but fill you with joy."
— Sally Altass, author of The Witch Laws and book reviewer at The Indie Book Nook
"I enjoyed this genre-hopping, seafaring tale. Sarah clearly knows her business when it comes to sailing. Additionally, she has developed a genuinely impressive and endearing heroine. Grey is naïve and young, but tough, clever and resourceful; she is scared, but her brain still functions rationally. She is a character with an intellect which is to be respected, and she quickly wins over her fellow stranded passengers with her courage and decisiveness. Worth a read if you like more discerning YA."

- Reviewed in the United States on August 23, 2023If you remember Kat Wallace has children---
the rivalry continues with new generations :
If you've ready the New Earth Series: you know Kat was enslaved by Ashton's father, and the rivalry unfolds with a new generation, although this one is more family friendly- and can be read separately from the New Earth series (which is more focused for a more mature audience by comparison).
That all said though-- there are bonus perks such as sailing terms, along with some maps to give you an idea of the world that is part of the New Earth folks.
Grey loves to sail and with this latest installment of futuristic fantasy pirate adventures, we get a volume that focuses on
Kat's daughter Grey and her rival Ashton (Abernathy) must learn to not have fear and stop being foes, but learn to be friends.
The wonderful story telling continues-- fantasy is not my usual genre but this author is on the list of those that has made me reconsider reading it after all.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 20, 2024Having read the previous 4 books, I understood the back story well. This book is written for a younger audience than them, and I think you could read it on its own and still understand and enjoy it. All in all, a great read that kept me turning pages waiting to see what would happen next.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 28, 2023It's the year 2369, and Grey Shima is a 14-year-old girl who wants to do things her way, including participating in a dangerous sea race. She is outgoing and super smart. When stranded with guys twice her age, she turns out to be the one with the most brains. Grey is stranded with someone she can't stand but they learn to work together. This is a great story that had plenty of surprises and held my interest. The characters show growth, and Grey is a strong female protagonist. Highly recommended!
- Reviewed in the United States on October 10, 2023A coming-of-age story set in the future on the high seas. What a delightful story. I loved Grey. Her intelligence and thoughtfulness is wonderful, especially when she has to deal with a person who hurt her family. The way the left their animosity behind so they could work together to get out of trouble was inspiring.
The description of the storm and the waves was to me, almost literally breathtaking it was so realistic.
Can be read as a standalone, but I am going to read the previous books to learn more about Greys background.
I received an advance copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 25, 2023This is a great book for teens. Its main character is a strong, determined young woman who survives in a harsh world by using her head and acquired skills. She's both interesting and fun. I loved the detailed information the writer provided about sailing. The story takes place in an imaginary world, but the sailing is real. Well done, Sarah Branson.
