Cristiano Ronaldo says "seven is the magic number" after it was confirmed that he has reclaimed his iconic shirt number following his return to Manchester United.

Rejoining the club on transfer deadline day from Italian giants Juventus, United's supporters were forced to wait more than another 48 hours to discover what shirt number the five-time Ballon d'Or winner would be awarded, with Edinson Cavani the previous incumbent in the No.7 shirt.

Premier League rules state that a player cannot swap shirt numbers once a season is under way, meaning there was a sense of uncertainty concerning what shirt number Ronaldo would be awarded.

However, United were granted special dispensation by the Premier League., allowing Ronaldo to reclaim his iconic shirt number at Old Trafford for a second time.

Cavani, meanwhile, has since claimed the No.21 shirt following Daniel James' move to Leeds United.

For the first time since his shirt number was confirmed, Ronaldo has taken to social media to comment on the fact he has been reunited with his trademark number.

The Portugal international posted: "7 is the magic number."

As well as his comment, the picture Ronaldo uploaded of himself pointing to the back of his United shirt was a graphic-type image, with the image saying: "I'm back where I belong. My never ending love."

Ronaldo, for almost all of his career, has carried the No.7 shirt with him, both at club level and on international duty for Portugal.
