J.C. Martin talked to me after the last meeting and said he had an idea for a really neat kit for the club to do as club project.
We ordered the parts and J.C. built the prototype today. It works great. We will have 9 kits of parts at the next club meeting and will sell them for the cost of parts and prorated shipping. You must come to the meeting to get a kit and no, I won't mail one.
More details later when I have the final cost figure.

We have a working prototype. J.C. Martin delivered the finished prototype to me today at 4:30. The next Cal-QRP group project will be the W6IPA designed hardware for a K3NG keyer. Guys, you won't believe what this keyer will do. For those of you learning CW, check out the features by searching K3NG keyer features. The practice mode is awesome. One feature I like is the abc sending feature. You send the alphabet, and if you send the correct letter, it beeps, if you make a mistake, it bongs. Pretty neat. It will certainly improve my sending, and everyone knows I can stand some improvement, a lot, actually.
We will have 8 complete kits, including a neat case that J.C. designed out of acrylic sheet and standoffs. The cost of the parts is $30, and we are selling 8 kits at the meeting in May. That is the actual cost of the parts and postage. All parts needed to build the kit are included. You must attend to buy a kit. They will not be shipped. But don't despair. J.C. will post the BOM, with part numbers and sources, plus gerber files will be made available so that you can order your own pc boards. J.C will also post a manual on line that will make it a snap to build. I will have the kits at the May meeting.
THanks to J.C. for heading up this great project. He did a ton of work, and I want to thank him publicly for his efforts. Pictures will be posted soon. Doug

I put a basic version together on a breadboard when I was first learning CW. SUPER capable keyer. Can't wait to see what you guys have put together! Wish I could make the meeting.

John, J.C. W6IPA is going to post a parts list and manual as well as Gerber files for the circuit board. You can download the Gerber files and then send them to a PCB shop (there are a number of them out there, the one I've successfully used in the past is called AllPCB and they're in China) and they will print and mail you the board(s) you ordered. You would be in charge of sourcing everything on the parts list yourself, but with part numbers it should be a pretty simple ordeal. So, you send off the Gerber files to be printed and while that's happening you round up all the parts. When your board shows up in the mail you have everything you need to build the keyer. It's really quite an interesting and educational way to build something!

Ivan,
There are a lot of options out there for the K3NG based keyed (i built 5 different versions). The one that will be available is using a mega 2560 mini. Nothing revolutionary. There is a header for a PS2 keyboard but primary goal was to have something that can be used with a logger in contests. It’s really a platform that you can use to add features and experiment - there are few digital and analog pins that are on headers to be able to add functions, and a support for 6 memory buttons. I am slowly adding files on thingiverse - i don’t know that this will be the final repository.

Are the thingiverse GERBER files the ones to
send to China?
Its looking like $50 buys 50 PCBs from
JLCPCB.
I would be inclined to press the trigger on this if anyone can
tell me these GERBERS are the final GERBERS to build this.
and then
I would share those 50 PCBs.... simple enough ... a buck each.

I played with the keyer last night. I used the send the alphabet feature. Really cool. Instant feedback. Does anyone know how to access the receiving options?? There are a couple of modes that I would like to to try. My version just has paddle input now, as I have not installed the buttons or a keyboard.

Ok perfect, that's what JLPCB extracted from the Gerber files. JLPCB is also cheaper for this board that ALLPCB is, right now anyway. The cost to print 5 boards is less and the shipping cost is less with JLPCB. Thanks for the update.

If you only have access to the Command Mode using a command button (and not the CLI mode using a terminal program on your computer connected via the USB) then in the file features_and_options.h you enable -
#define FEATURE_ALPHABET_SEND_PRACTICE // enables command mode S command - created by Ryan, KC2ZWM
#define FEATURE_COMMAND_MODE_PROGRESSIVE_5_CHAR_ECHO_PRACTICE // enables command mode U
The second feature listed will send random characters to you in groups of 5. First one character, then two, then three etc and you need to reply correctly in order to progress to the next character.
If you have the CLI then the \K command enters training mode and there are a few more options there -Receive Practice, Keyboard Interactive Receive Practice, Random Groups Receive Practice, Wordsworth Receive Practice, Receive / Transmit Echo Practice

As of now, the only training options available in the command mode (accessed though the encoder switch or button 0) are alphabet and echo. There are more options available by accessing the command line interface through a computer (connect usb to a raspberry pi for example).
I think this could be better. I am looking at two options: - add a full menu using the encoder/lcd to remove the need to use the CLI for this - add some more options mapped to some letters in the command mode.
