An unusual encounter. A destined connection. Two superhuman teens in over their heads…

San Antonio, Texas. Thirteen-year-old Cheater isn’t sure how she ended up wanted for murder. Burdened with a power she doesn’t understand, that’s triggered by a creeping darkness she can’t remember, she’s both saved and taken lives. But when she makes a vigilante move to stop a mugging, she encounters a boy who might be the key to cracking the mystery of her strange gift.

Fifteen-year-old Jaz has survived too many tragedies to stay on the right side of the law. So when his small gang’s robbery gets interrupted by a teenaged fugitive, he’s perplexed by her act of heroism. And when he discovers they’re both connected to the same mysterious fairytale, he feels drawn to her quest for answers.

But with danger lurking around every corner and the police hot on their trail, they may not even make it past the city limits…

Paradise Rising: A Teen Superhero Fantasy (The Gifted Ones Book 1) by P.G. Shriver is the story of two teenagers with a strange gift that links them to one another. Cheater is a 13 year old girl who is on the run. She is wanted for murder, but she can not remember what she did that would make her guilty. It has to do with her power, this darkness that takes her over and leaves her confused and with no memories. She has used it to save lives before, but sometimes lives have also been taken. While on the run, she spots a robbery taking place. When she jumps in to save the day, she meets Jaz, a 15 year old boy with the same power that she has. The two are now linked together and need to work as partners to be able to understand what is happening to them and how they can use their power for good.
The best part about this read is that it gets away from the standard super powers that we see used over and over. This felt a little more fresh and unique, something the superhero genre could use at this point. The characters were well developed and the narrative moved at a steady pace. There is a great opening scene that gets the reader interested and wanting to know more about what is going on. This definitely read like young adult fiction, and the characters would lend themselves well to readers from 5th to 8th grade. Fans of the Marvel and DC movies and comics will enjoy this read and the fresh, edgy new take it gives the characters.

I really liked this story. If I had to highlight what I enjoyed the most about it, I would say it is the fact that it is a book that gets the readers interested from the very beginning and wanting to know more about the destinies and fates of the characters. “Paradise Rising: A Teen Superhero Fantasy” written by P.G. Shriver is the promising first instalment in the series “The Gifted Ones Book 1”.
The book follows Cheater and Jaz, two adolescents with special powers, who meet while they are trying to survive the streets of San Antonio, in the year 2024, all by their own. Both have tragic pasts and they soon discover they are also connected to the same mysterious fate. They have to reach a promised land, but will they be able to avoid the dangers lurking in the shadows and succeed?
This is a fascinating and original novel. I especially liked the characters’ development. I think that anyone can empathise with them, especially teenagers. A book not to be missed

Depending on who you ask, or what you read, YA literature falls somewhere between middle grade and adult literature and is typically known for its teen protagonist(s) going through a coming-of-age type journey. Paradise Rising: A Teen Superhero Fantasy (The Gifted Ones Book 1) by P.G. Shriver is a well-crafted teen and young adult sci-fi mystery.

It was a fascinating and captivating read that had me immersed from the beginning. The story flowed from scene to scene with ease, and the author shows exceptional ability when it comes to storytelling. There are plenty of attention-grabbing moments in this page turner that will take the reader on a truly spellbinding journey.

There is something very magical about reading fantasy fiction. It speaks to the very thread of my imagination, jolting it to life and transporting it on an exhilarating journey. This story did exactly that. Fans of the sci-fi fantasy genre will not be disappointed. I’ll be looking forward to reading more from this author in the future. Highly recommended and a well-deserved five stars from me.

“Paradise Rising: A teen superhero fantasy” is the first book in The Gifted series, written by P.G. Shriver, best selling author. This is a middle length, thirty-chapter novel about two superhuman teens.
This book has a bit of everything, intelligent heroines, a very good plot and well rounded characters, great settings and stories that portray hope. The author did a great job with this story; scene descriptions and character portrayal are fantastic. It is a fantasy story that will keep you glued to the pages.
YA fantasy, and particularly this one, can be read both by adults and teens because it falls somewhere in the middle. If you are fond of fantasy as I am, this is the book for you. Once I started reading I could not put it down and although it has some more than three hundred pages I finished reading it in a couple of days.
I will surely recommend reading Paradise rising and I am eager to keep on reading the next ones in this series.

In San Antonio Texas, 13-year-old Cheater is perplexed when she finds out she is wanted for murder. She is an orphan and her only friend, if you can call it that is a little dog that follows her around. She is plagued by weird dreams and a uncontrollable power that seems to do what it wants, whether it is to help or hurt people. One day, she crosses paths with 15-year-old Jaz who himself is usually on the wrong side of the law. Cheater ends up saving a life and Jaz feels compelled to join her in her search for the answers behind her power.
This is the first in a trilogy about these two teenagers and their unusual powers that threaten to overwhelm them if they cannot get them under control. I found the story to be entertaining and even though the main protagonists were both teenagers, they were handling “real world” problems and such it made it more interesting for me to read. I think the story is well worth the read, and I certainly am open to reading the next book in the series.
