STU00206014: Enhancing Circadian Signals Study

Purpose of Study

The purpose of this research study is to determine if meal timing and melatonin can improve health and sleep in adults between the ages of 55 and 75 who are at risk of cardiometabolic diseases.

Study Visits & Compensation

This study consists of a total of 10 visits over a 6-9 month period scheduled approximately 7-14 days apart based on availability.

The out-patient visits will take place at the Sleep and Circadian Center located at Northwestern's Chicago Campus or Northwestern Memorial Hospital in Chicago. The two in-patient visits will take place at Northwestern Memorial Hospital in Chicago. Each of these in-patient visits are 3 days long.

You will be compensated up to $2850 for your time and effort for completing the study. Subjects will be paid by check once halfway through the study and once at the end of study.

Study Procedures

Activity Monitoring: You will be asked to wear an activity monitor (wrist watch) throughout the duration of the study.

Dietary Monitoring: You will be asked to maintain a log of all your meals and use a free phone application to take pictures of all meals for the duration of the study.

Intervention Procedures: All subjects will be asked to take either a placebo or melatonin capsule daily throughout the duration of the intervention. Subjects may be asked to alter their meal times based on intervention group assigned.

Blood Draws: Blood samples will be collected during in-patient and out-patient visits.

Sleep Recordings: Your sleep will be recorded on each night of the In-patient visits.
