The purpose of this survey is to solicit feedback from occupational therapy practitioners (currently practicing OTs and COTAs) about a gaming system we are developing for use in upper extremity rehabilitation. We expect that this survey will take 5 – 10 minutes to complete. This survey is anonymous; however, you can provide your name and email at the end of the survey to be entered into a raffle for a $50 gift card. We will discard your name and email after we select a winner.

The gaming system is designed to help people with hand and arm impairments practice flexibility and strength exercises while playing available online games. It has 3 components:

  • a game console
  • a kindle or laptop computer
  • an app

The game console has four stalks that can be bent to any angle. The back two stalks can be used to elicit pinch strength and flexion of the shoulder and elbow. The front stalks show controllers that elicit grip strength (on the front left) or that involve working on closing the hand around a cylinder (front right)

The kindle or laptop computer sits in the middle of the console. It is equipped with a therapist app in which games can be prescribed for home exercise based on client’s interests and what exercises/movement the games elicit. The games involve moving the cursor using a combination of activating sensors on the stalks. For instance, the cursor may go left when the client pinches together the lever to the base on one of the back controllers.

The console works with a kindle or laptop computer and can be used in clinic or at home for home exercises in rehabilitation. An occupational therapy practitioner can prescribe games and track progress using the app.

Please fill out the survey as completely as possible. Your answers will help us determine the interest for and the use of a gaming system like this in occupational therapy.
