Nevada I-80 construction | I-80 Exit Guide

Beginning August 14, I-80 lanes will be reduced and shifted over Golconda Summit east of Winnemucca as the Nevada Department of Transportation launches a two-year project to install truck parking lots and climbing lanes.

I-80 over Golconda Summit will be reduced to one lane in each direction and shifted to share designated lanes on one direction of interstate. Speed limits will be reduced to 55 mph for safety. The lane closures and shifts will be in place 24/7 as construction continues through fall of 2024, with reduced lane closures during winter construction. Existing roadside truck parking will be closed during construction.

The project will install approximately three miles of truck climbing lanes on both directions of I-80 near Golconda Summit, enhancing travel for all interstate drivers by helping to reduce the impact of speed differentials created as heavier vehicles travel more slowly up the grade.

Truck parking will also be constructed on both sides of the interstate at Golconda Summit, with 25 parking stalls constructed on the eastbound direction and 24 stalls constructed on the westbound side. Freight vehicle drivers do frequently park on existing frontage roads and ramps, but there currently are no full truck parking facilities available at the location.

Improvements also include bridge replacements, roadside drainage improvements and enhanced lighting. To facilitate the new truck parking stalls and access from I-80, the existing interchange will be reconfigured. Vault toilets and enclosed trash bins will also be installed at each parking lot.

With almost half (45%) of traffic in the area consisting of large trucks, the new truck lane and parking facilities will enhance freight travel and mobility along this critical national freight route.
