Nvidia's new update for Shield TV introduces Android 11, a new match audio feature, the Gboard keyboard, support for aptX Bluetooth headsets, and more.Android 11 comes to Shield
Nvidia Shield has been running Android 9 since August 2019, which partly relates to Nvidia's decision to skip Android 10. Android 11 is now coming to Shield and while it is still not the most recent version of Android for TV (version 12), it is a step forward. - "Shield TV gets upgraded to Android 11. Updates include new privacy features, and a new default keyboard with built-in text to speech capabilities," Nvidia said in its announcement text. Android 11 is part of Nvidia's Shield Experience Upgrade 9.0 package. The update also introduces the Gboard keyboard. It includes new Bluetooth features like aptX support and an option to disconnect Bluetooth devices on sleep.Shield recently got the new Google TV-like user interface (shown in the picture below) but it is not related to this new software package. Instead, Google is pushing out the refreshed UI directly to devices through an app update, region by region.
Nvidia Shield gets upgraded to Android 11In addition, there is a new function to match audio resolution, new energy-saver functionality, and Stadia button support for Xbox, PlayStation and Shield game controllers. Nvidia used to opportunity to highlight that Shield is the only device to support GeForce Now game streaming in 4K HDR and 7.1 surround – it is limited to 1080p on Smart TVs. Nvidia highlighted new or upgraded apps such as Apple TV (with 4K Dolby Vision and Atmos support) and Google Play Movies (with 4K Dolby Vision support). The IMDb TV app was also highlighted in the announcement.
