Guardians of The Lambsfoot!

Nice work Jer. I was going to suggest lodging a small piece of oiled matchstick/toothpick/leather in the bottom of the blade channel, so it rests under the kick and raises the nail nick - if you have enough room to raise the point without it sitting proud. But it looks like you've solved the problem with panache. I like the result.

Interesting to read peoples thoughts on the pen secondary in the Lambsfoot pattern as well. I don't have one, as I felt when handling them in person, that they were a little bit bulkier than I would probably pocket-carry frequently. But I suppose it would be possible to make a dual bladed Lambsfoot with very thin, contoured covers and brass liner scales, so it was equal in width to a single blade version.

The pen blade seems a good secondary blade to have, in theory. In other two blade jack-knife patterns, it can be a bit redundant, for my uses. I only really deploy them, as Bart said, in settings where you don't want to alarm people. For some of the old timers in Australia, the pen blade was their most used pocket knife blade, though.

I tend to agree that one of the interesting things about the Lambsfoot pattern, is how after using it awhile, you don't really miss a bellied blade style that much. This was kind of a revelation to me, as when I started getting into knives, I was all about the drop point style, with its full, sweeping belly curve.

Although there's no traditional precedent for this, I wonder if a useful secondary blade in a two bladed Lambsfoot, might actually be a short, spey/castrator blade, like a stockman knife size?

Awesome ox-horn A. Wright you got there @flatblackcapo. My one's nearly a mirror image in its cover patterning:

Great to see you here my friend  That's my usual 'fix', I usually use a slither of balsa wood

I thought I'd carry my own Oxhorn Lambsfoot today. I was pleased to get this one, but unlike Kevin's, and Chin's I think, it only has the golden stuff on one side, with darker horn on the pile side.

I have noticed that the pen blades on many older well used knives show greater wear. Even the shorter of the two blades on pen knives often display this trait. I wonder if this preference was based on social or utilitarian considerations.

Along similar lines, I have noticed that on well used 3 blade stockman knives in Texas, the sheepfoot is quite often the most worn blade. Perhaps this preference is indicative of the highly useful nature of the point down blade shape.

Still working on multiquoting.
Thanks to all with kind words for my tinkering.

I tried the matchstick ploy first, but it didn't work for a couple of reasons I don't remember, I having perhaps attempted first to drown my sorrows. (My sorrows were dry-shod for the filing and grinding).

I may not be alone in overusing the 2ry to prolong the life of the main.

I've noticed the same Bart

I thought you would have Jer, sometimes the point doesn't sit low enough in the blade well to keep the point hidden. I do have a couple of GEC knives with points which sit slightly out of the well anyway, and I generally just put them in a pocket sheath, because filing the kick would lower the blade to the point where the secondary blocks the pull/nick

Yes, it was something like point too high with the match under the tang and no effect with the match under the edge.

Attempting a direct upload. If it works, it should show that my 2-blade lf is not much if any thicker than my singletons.

Hmm. What part of "full size image" did it not understand?
They do get bigger if you click on them.

Looks like a single image goes full-sized, but multiples as above. (I tried again in the whatcha today thread.)

Diggin' this oxhorn.

Thanks, Jack!
That is really something! It glows like someone said

A great discussion all: Jer, I really am quite impressed with your modifications. I have neither the skills, proper tools or patience to attempt such things. I have yet only one lambsfoot, that being a single. Were I to buy another, I would stick with single blades. To me IMHO only, it seems like a knife that really wants to be a single, purpose built blade.

Here's a contribution from a newb! Love Lambfoot blades and love this thread!

I just bought this from an antiques fair in Southwell, Notts. It looks like its received a heavy blow and is quite twisted so a bit stiff to open

Welcome to BF Traditionals and to the Guardians :)

CALLING ALL GUARDIANS! HELP ME WITH A BIG & DIRTY JOB!

The recent Photobucket shenanigans has inevitably caused some ugly gaps in this thread. These things happen from time to time, but I'd like to keep the Guardians thread as complete as possible, while it's still of manageable proportions. So I'm asking for your help. Please consider re-editing any affected posts you've made in this thread, so that your pics show again. As a reward, I'll do a giveaway. Your name goes in the hat once for each Lambsfoot photo you've posted here prior to this post - for each photo that can be seen! I'll do a draw in a month, and the winner gets a prize. How's that?

Thanks everyone

I'll see i I have any to fix.

Thanks. I just happened to have a Dremel drum sander just right for the notch.

Thanks Jer, I've done the first 20 pages of my posts, so far!

Well done Lee :) I'm currently on page 26 of my posts in this thread, but my mouse-hand is beginning to feel like the hand of a slot-playing old lady in a Las Vegas casino! :D
